Quack Fix: Ducks return to practice and prepare for ASU
Ok, we have a quick-hitting fix today. Enjoy!
- The Ducks practiced yesterday for the first time since conditioning work on Friday, with Chip calling it "as good a Monday as we've had."
- Moseley's feature today is on the defensive backfield, which currently lead the conference in pass efficiency defense. Oh, and in case you hadn't heard, Brock Osweiler is 6'8".
- Aaron Fentress writes that the Oregon staff is not concerned by the defense's inability to force turnovers thus far this season.
- Bob Clark also has feature today, with a profile on Garrett Sim, the lone remaining player from the six who made up the incoming class in 2008.
- LaMichael James was named the Pac-12 offensive player of the week after his performance against Cal.
- And, in his look around the conference, Clark examines the rough introductions to Pac-12 play that Utah and Colorado have experienced.
- Ted Miller had his usual slew of Monday posts. First, Oregon holds steady at #2 in his weekly power rankings. He tabs LMJ as his first-half offensive MVP. He also has a couple of Oregon mentions in his look back over the week 6 games. And, Miller writes that the upcoming ASU game can put the conference back on the national scene. Finally, Miller ends with his first-half review of Oregon.
Don't forget to check out the videos after the jump.

"I love my Ducks (wait 'til you see my O)"
Any more gossip or idle conjecture on LMJ's timeline?
btw, I’m not going to be a very big fan of the not commenting on injuries policy if this stretches out a few weeks. Don’t fans (those who pay for the program, support it, get it on the teevee etc) deserve to have information when it is something as critical as the status of our beloved and best offensive player?
It isn’t like ASU or whatever team will scheme for Oregon differently if they know Barner is getting the carries or James, it doesn’t transform us from a spread to pro set team.
Don’t fans (those who pay for the program, support it, get it on the teevee etc) deserve to have information when it is something as critical as the status of our beloved and best offensive player?
I don’t think we deserve anything like that. We deserve being able to go to and/or watch the game.
But I think it’s fair to feel frustrated.
A big reason why they don’t say anything is that they don’t want to set any timeline. They don’t want to rush anything.

Not sure that watching games is the only thing that fans are entitled to
I suppose I can see it your way but I do think that what fans want (info about their favorite pass time) should be a pretty important part of what drives what is essentially an entertainment industry.
I like to know if the players I'm emotionally attached to are healthy
But more importantly, I want the Ducks to win.
If Chip thinks withholding injury information helps us win, I trust him.
This is my sentiment exactly
I would love to know what’s going on, but would rather win. There are two other really big factors here:
1) It is ultimately up to Lamichael if we have a right to know about his injury. It is HIS medical information and he has a right to privacy of that info.
2) Shu pointed this out: The medical staff and Coach Kelly may not know exactly when Lamichael will be ok to play again. Stating a timeline for his return does little good, while providing a possible source of conflict/more questions.
I’m guessing we hold him out against Colorado for safeties sake and that he maybe sees some action against WSU with Barner still being the main guy back there.

If anything
withholding info on our best player is to the team’s advantage. If there’s one guy you have to prepare for, it’s LaMichael, and if the other team thinks there’s a chance he’s going to play, they are going to have to spend time focusing on him and not other facets of our team.

the only difference would be if you had to spend a tad more time on Carson.

I agree…but I still think LMJ is a better back, so it’s possible without him, ASU might take a risk and focus on the passing game in expectation that Chip will put the game on Darron’s shoulders. This way they have to be ready for a heavy dose of the run game (though really with the way our offense works, it’s probably not going to change any)…

The other element is DAT
depending on if he’s in the slot or in the backfield primarily, that could significantly change how they prepare, since other than huff, we don’t have game breaking speed from the WR position if DAT is a running back saturday. Those two guys can really stretch the field for us however, when they are out wide.

But you are dealing with a student athlete that’s protected my certain rules, and might make a lot of money one day.
Like Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Good read here
Most information is releasable, but the environment encourages non-discloser, especially for armature student athletes who might become pro. When disclosing an injury the student athlete must consider their rights and then make a business decision. LMJ has to consider how is injury will impact his draft status. Talking about his progress is not making him money; it is getting out on the field ASAP and being productive.
Is the UO Athletic Department classified as a health-care provider with regards to HIPAA restrictions?
This is something that’s always puzzled me. Providers and “covered entities” and “business associates” fall under HIPAA privacy limitations; one thing they can’t do is release protected healthcare information (PHI) to the media without consent.
Since the AthDept is responsible for training and injury maintenance, it would seem they would qualify as a “provider”, or at worst a “covered entity”. Which makes me wonder how any college gets away with announcing injury information.
I think the NFL is different — all the players sign consent waivers regarding release of injury information.
No clue regarding FERPA. Wasn’t he a character in Ocean’s 11?

In Ted Miller's write-up about Oregon, he brought up again the semi-mysterious 'leg whips' plague which appeared
in the LSU game, never seen before or since. Has anyone seen a video explaining exactly what those calls were all about?
Post a link please, if its worth while. Thanx, I chose to forget about those.
"What you are entrusted to do as a coach is to create an environment where your players have a chance to be successful." CHIP KELLY
I remember reading somewhere that Steve Greatwood said
that those calls came from one referee’s interpretation of how Oregon’s lineman were cut blocking. (which is legal in the box) Apparently, he (the ref) felt that they were “leg whips” and threw the flag. No other referee group has called it that way, and it’s a technique that we’ve used for many years.

That is a tough break for them.
But to be honest, I don’t feel bad for Utah fans. They felt that they would arrive in the Pac and have no trouble winning week in and week out.
They were wrong. Very wrong.
It makes sense that Brock Osweiler attends ASU. His tattoo states "live life to it's fullest". The error is subtle, yet it is embarrassing regardless.
I don't think most of their fans thought that re this year's squad
They knew they were in a down year and they wouldn’t be world beaters. If they had arrived in the PAC in 08 or 09 there is no reason to think they wouldn’t have been a top team in our league, just like if fBSU came over this year they would be a top 3 team for sure.
It seems like there's still some denial there.
Reading through this Ute diagnosis, it doesn’t seem unreasonable, but I think there’s a missed connection there when they say it’s not part of the Pac-10 grind. A lot of the more intangible things – preparation, attention to detail, margin for error – are part of the Pac-12 grind. It’s not just about having bigger and faster players, it’s having to prepare for those players, and prepare for good coaching schemes, week in and week out, and be motivated week in and week out, and execute week in, week out. One week you’re scheming for Price and Polk, the next it’s Barkley and Woods, then Thomas and LMJ and DAT, then for a reprieve you face Andrew Luck. They’ve gone from being USC to Oregon State. It was a lot easier when they were truly challenged maybe three times a year – you can focus on those, and maybe be a little sloppy or unfocused the weeks before and after because it doesn’t matter, the games surrounding the big tests are easily winnable without being at the top of your game. Now, it’s the opposite. I dont doubt that they can play with most teams in conference right now, but the margin of error is just so slim, the demands w/r/t preparation are so much greater. And that’s part of the major conference grind that non-BCS boosters willfully ignore. All that said, I don’t think it’ll take very long before the Utes are doing well.
I don’t think I can attribute Utah’s struggles this year to the Pac-12 grind, myself.
For the purpose of discussion, they’ve only played 5 games, and 3 have been Pac-12 games. The sad thing is, their “Pac-12 grind” is pretty much over.

Do you think that if UU had joined in 08 they would have had a strong chance to do exactly that?
or if fBSU had been in the PAC the last 4-5 years they wouldn’t have won at least 1 year? It is more a down year by Utah than domination by the PAC, we have a pretty mediocre group below the top 2 this year.
Any of the BSU teams from the last couple seasons would have a better chance that ’08 Utah because those BSU teams have Kellen Moore.
That Utah team was one of the luckiest in existence, not only during the season, but in the bowl game. They would not have won the Pac-12 that year, and would have dropped at least 2 games in conference.
The main problem is that making that jump is very, very difficult. You have to adjust big-time, as omb pointed out above, in how you approach your entire season. I don’t think either team would win the conference the first year. Utah is going to be competitive moving forward because they have a solid coaching staff, but it’s going to take a couple years.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
1 team, read: ONE TEAM
Made it through the round robin Pac-10 undefeated. The only other teams to make it undefeated thru the Pac were from before we played 9 pac-10 games. I don’t care how good BSU or Utah were, Oregon has had teams like theirs where our first string were very talented and good but we’d go 9-3 or 8-4 because we lacked depth.
Oregon has turned a corner where our second string is often as good as our first string, the depth we build was what got us through undefeated last year. If Costa didn’t step up for thomas we wouldn’t have sniffed the NCG. Depth will kill either of these teams in a physical conference like the Pac or BIG ect. where the athletes are bigger, better and faster than the medocre talent in the sub conferences.

Players are more likely to get hurt when they play equal or bigger opponents. It’s gonna happen. The teams that survive do it by luck or great depth (usually the latter). Utah’s and Boise’s first strings can play with anyone…but can their second and third strings? I don’t think so…not yet at least.

Except they're 0-3 against that mediocre middle...
I don’t think either of those teams in any of those years would have made it through with fewer than 2 losses.
Look at ‘08 Utah’s actual results. They beat OSU (albeit a good OSU team) by 3 at home, and had multiple close games against the middle to dregs of the MWC – and a 37-21 win over Weber State! Swap in a Pac-10 slate, and they probably trip up at least a couple times.
BSU, maybe. But even in the years they have completely slaughtered nearly everyone in the WAC, they’ve had down weeks, and their one or two games a year against decent BCS teams have been closer and less dominating than people remember. I’m not going to argue that they would be doing no better than Utah is this year, but I highly doubt they win in any year.
If they can figure it out by next year, they might have a shot then.
Since the misses stay the same, they’ll still miss Oregon, and they get USC at home. We don’t know how good Stanford will be w/o Luck, but there’s a decent chance they’ll be #2 in the North so missing them helps. On the minus side they’ll be playing at ASU and Washington. Though then of course UW will be doing a weird home-but-not at the Seahawks stadium.

that the media is so quick to claim Oregon will lose a step offensively without LMJ. Now of course I wouldn’t be surprised to see this either, but time and time again it seems that Chip is able to keep his offense rolling regardless of who is playing. And it’s not like we don’t have playmakers who can fill in for him. They’re not LaMike, but KB and DAT are no slouches, plus Carson’s showed promise and Huff is versatile. IMO We DO lose a step without LMJ
I know KJB and DAT are very, very good. I don’t actually think we lose any speed, but I do think we lose an important option on offense – there is no doubt that LMJ is the best player on our team, bar none. Most importantly, he is the most physical of all of our backs. KJB has occasionally had trouble powering into the endzone through traffic on short yardage. LMJ gets it in every time.

I think he’s also more powerful. I am STILL consistently surprised how many yard LMJ gets after contact. When he’s at his best, 3-yard gains become 7- to 8-yard gains, and losses become 3-yard gains. The guy’s legs are so incredible powerful and he has such great body control, that unless you have him swarmed, he’s going to slip off of you to pick up a couple more yards.
Barner is fast, and hits the hole hard, but he doesn’t have the same escapability as LMJ.

I worry that he shys from contact too much.
He doesn’t have the tenacity to put his head down and run someone over. He’ll try to dink and dodge and lacks LMJ’s ability to break tackles. The one play that went big for him he was untouched around the edge last week. LMJ will put his hat on a LB and break tackles on his way to the endzone. I havn’t seen that from barner since before the Wazzu game.

he is averaging 6.19 (not too shabby) but it should be better considering he has the fresh legs and is not the defense’s main key. Campbell will have to coach him up.
"I love Oregon's obsolete recruiting report on an unhealthy level. Just more proof how balla Chip Kelly really is." Dr. Saturday
I actually think that Barner was significantly worse his freshman year. He was never even close to a 1a back, and had 1/4 of the carries LMJ did over that season (and even most of those were in the first part of the season), despite being healthy the whole season. He had some great special teams performances that stick out, but he was an average running back that season.
He got much better over last offseason, but was significantly hurt by the injury at WSU. Despite that, he ended up with about 1/3 of the carries that LMJ did.
Either way, he’s not close to LMJ’s level, though I’d say there’s probably about 2 other backs in the country that could even be in that conversation.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
This
Barner is a great back that we can rely on to execute the offense. He could start at 1/2 the BCS schools out there. This doesn’t make him equal LMJ. James is a top 3 RB, Barner is a top 30. We will definitely miss LMJ while he is out and it will put us at risk, especially against ASU
But the point still remains that he’s a great back, and good enough to rack up over 100 yards and keep teams honest. Plus he can hit the home run at anytime as well. He’s not LMJ, but he’s good enough to be our #1 back for a couple weeks.

Yep...
we should still get 300 yards rushing.
"I love Oregon's obsolete recruiting report on an unhealthy level. Just more proof how balla Chip Kelly really is." Dr. Saturday
I think my point was more that James has improved a lot more. In ’09, when Barner would come in, the production was about the same. (And while his number of carries were lower, his average was only about 3/4ths of a yard less than James.
James’ ceiling is (and was) a lot higher, but I believe there was more parity in their freshmen year than there is today.

what if? Barner has suffered more injuries. It’s time to see him shine. We will get a glimpse into next year.
"I love Oregon's obsolete recruiting report on an unhealthy level. Just more proof how balla Chip Kelly really is." Dr. Saturday
Barner’s ypc was actually better tham James’ last season. I think from ‘09 to ’10, Barner improved more than James did, but James has taken it to a whole different level this season. I don’t think we’ve had a chance to really evaluate Barner’s growth this season because of his injury. At times, he’s looked really good, and I’m hoping he can put that together more when he gets the ball consistently this weekend.

Unless Lillis gets a paint job or something, there’s nothing there that screams “Oregon.” Nothing beats the 2007 location.
I think it’s a good location.
They probably don’t want to go through the hassle of getting an environmental permit from where it was in ‘07 (Which is why they haven’t set up over there since), and the location where they were last time was extremely limiting and there was no room.

I'm guessing the location has a lot to do with the late game.
If they had it at or near Autzen, they would have to open up the parking lot, thus allowing fans with parking passes to remain in the parking lot tailgating all day. Obviously that could lead to some very out of hand fans by gametime. Its probably a smart move by the University.
The Gameday game is usually on in primetime.
USC ’09 and ASU ’07 were at least. Those are the two I remember clearly.

What!?
I am not a fan of this location.
I understand that people like the idea of showcasing one of the newest and nicest academic buildings on campus.
But in my opinion, College Gameday isn’t about academics, or showcasing anything other than football. The feel of being part of a massive gameday crowd stationed right next to Autzen is so unique that I doubt that where I spend half of my week in class will feel anywhere near as special.
It makes sense that Brock Osweiler attends ASU. His tattoo states "live life to it's fullest". The error is subtle, yet it is embarrassing regardless.

But we only get gameday once a year at the most. We might as well make it a little more special.
Who has to get the environmental permit? Is there any way that the athletic department can do it for ESPN to ensure that it is placed in front of Autzen?

I can see how some view it this way.
It seems to come down to a fundamental difference in views about how we should represent ourselves on Gameday.
My opinion is that it should be entirely about sports, and thus should at least be somewhere in the athletic complex. The entire television program is dedicated solely to college football, so I feel that we should have next to all of our football stuff.
Not to mention, last season it was north of Autzen, so you really couldnt really get all that good of a view of Autzen from where it was.

Kenjon Barner is awesome and will surprise many on Saturday
After last season, it was easy to conclude that Barner wasn’t the same player after the WSU hit, then he went and had an amazing performance in the civil war. We have nothing to worry about here…from what we’ve seen of Barner this year, (aside from punt return vs LSU) he’s filled in admirably when asked and has had some tough and effective inside runs. Speed was on display at Cal. Not to worry…
If LMJ can come back from that injury relatively quickly, and continue to perform at a high level, it may not only magnify his legend, but improve his draft stock.
It was so awesome to be in Eugene last week. I can’t believe Frog is still on 13th and doesn’t appear to have changed one bit. I love the expansion at Taylors. Ran into Brandon McLemore outside Taylors and rambled some drunken story about playing a pickup game with his brother…what an a-hole I was.

I read that Tuel may come back, but nothing guaranteed yet. I would still take Stanford and give up those points though.
Anthony "Q" was on last night...
daily wrap or something like that saying that WSU is getting good linebacking play. I am not buying into Stanford’s defense right now. I think with Tuel and their spread passing attack that they could drop some points on them. Stanford wins but I could really see 10-14 win.

A 10-14 pt win means a competitive game that isn't decided until the 55min mark. I don't see WSU being there yet. Save your money, bet against ND

I wouldn’t touch that game. It’s just that on tigerdroppings they’re calling it the slam dunk game of the week along with Ok St., and LSU. I just don’t have the stomach for it. I think people outside our region don’t realize nothing good comes out of playing in Pullman.

“Specifically?” Kelly shot back. “Breaking on a T cut at a 45-degree angle on a post-corner route.”

A bit OT, but some updates on USC that I found interesting...
Remember Dylan Baxter? The next Reggie Bush? He has nine carries all year so far, and those in the know won’t be surprised if he transfers. Apparently he’s totally fallen off the map.
Also, George Farmer, the can’t-miss WR who Oregon (among many others) desperately wanted, is a backup tailback. And ahead of Baxter.
He was a San Diego legend in high school.
He was one of the best players to come out of San Diego since Reggie Bush.
Aside from the potential, he does have some issues. He got in trouble for “that dumb little golf cart ride from the spoiled kid who thinks he is an agent” and he sounds somewhat undisciplined.
He scored a few touchdowns last season at USC. I think he had two or three rushing TD’s and I remember that he scored a passing TD as well.
It makes sense that Brock Osweiler attends ASU. His tattoo states "live life to it's fullest". The error is subtle, yet it is embarrassing regardless.
Funny thing about Baxter...
I was watching the USC game a couple of weeks ago and the announcers were talking about Baxter. They said that his mom was calling Kiffen wondering why her son wasn’t getting more playing time. Ouch. I never thought I would say this…but poor Kiffen. I thought that stuff stopped after little league.

Chip is a bit portly, not sure if the uniform would bring out his physique. A suit, topcoat and visor on the other hand would look quite smart
I like the suit idea too. I’m old enough to remember Tom Landry stalking the Cowboy sidelines in his fedora.

You mean you don’t like the cutoff hoodie? Hehe. I actually loved it a couple years back when Mike Nolan wore a suit for MOnday Night Football when he was the 49ers coach. The funny this is, if the NFL logo isn’t on it, you will catch hell for wearing. If I remember correctly, the NFL gave Nolan a hard time for that even though I thought I remember it being a tribute of sorts to the older coaches.
"Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do" -- John Wooden
It was Nolan and Jack Del Rio, and not only did they have to make sure their suits had the NFL logo on them, but they needed to get special permission to wear the suits in the first place, and the NFL was very reluctant to grant it. I mean, it’s easy to market hoodies and jackets. Not as easy to market suits with the NFL logo.
