Postgame + Evening Thread: Oregon 43, Washington State 28

It wasn't pretty, but Bryan Bennett and DeAnthony Thomas led the offense in the second half to pull away with the victory.  Questions linger as to if it was a pyrrhic victory, as Darron Thomas was yanked in favor of Bryan Bennett for reasons unknown, potentially creating a quarterback controversy.  The pass defense was also largely poor, as Marshall Lobbestael passed for 337 yards on the Ducks.

But, in the end, the offense finally found its rhythm and two special teams touchdowns ended up being the difference.

Lots of great Pac-12 action tonight with Stanford/USC, OSU/Utah/ and lossington/Arizona.

This is your postgame + evening thread.

Something really doesn't feel right about this win.

Maybe because BB arguably outplayed DT (BB had less INT and more TD. Hmmm)….maybe it just shouldn’t have been this close.

by Jaseface on Oct 29, 2011 3:33 PM PDT reply actions

It shouldn't.

I was…well not worried but disquieted by the talk by the players this past week. “They aren’t that good but we have to play well” and the like. Completely uncharacteristic and it obviously translated to indifference on the field.

This team is ridiculously deep and young

And with all the TEs and huge linemen we’ve got coming in….yikes. Lots of two TE sets, power running, paired with blazing fast backs, WR and QBs like BB and DT? Yeah, I’d like a second helping.

Agreed.

I wouldn’t mind us seeing some more size on the line. Both defensively and offensively. I think that’s the only thing really separating us from an Auburn or LSU.

I wouldn’t call it a pyrrhic victory. There were no losses by Oregon to make the win not seem like a win. Some players struggling to come back from injury, yes. Just a lackluster win.

Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?

by baseb3383 on Oct 29, 2011 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

No

I think that prior to this game Chip had decided that Thomas would play for a half and that Bennett would play coming out in the second half. I think Chip put Thomas back in to show he wasn’t hurt (though I could definitely be wrong about that).

I think the WHOLE team looked flat in the first half, and that wasn’t entirely unforeseeable. This team is not full of seniors like our team was last year.

I think it is good that we had to claw and fight for this win. This was our let down game. You can bet your ass we aren’t coming out flat in Seattle next week.

DT still is the more experienced player and what I think this really does is open up the ability to call more designed running plays for DT and to let him loose a little more. We know that Bennett is a more than capable backup.

First half was ugly but the O kicked into gear with BB

That kid has a cannon that throw from our 40 down to the 1 was impressive even though almost got picked. I have been a DT fan and though he was playing great before missing the game last week so he deserves to start next week but if the offense looks like it did in the first half Chip should make a permanent change as cold as that may be. DAT is a straight boss and man does the future look bright with the play of our freshmen.

QB controversy would have been DT coming back in for the drive after DAT scored. It didn’t happen, so as of right now, I don’t see the controversy.

If you’re DT, how do you feel about being benched at halftime despite a decent overall first half that was made to look MUCH worse than it really was by some drops and tipped balls?

I love Chip, but this makes me afraid that DT now doesn’t believe that his coach has confidence in him. Or something.

He was under major pressure and it was an improvised throw and route, that too.

It wasn’t a shitty throw. It was a foot and a half higher than it should have been, but still directly at Vaughn. It was bad luck that it was deflected off of his hands and into the WSU DB’s.

"I don't do well with pain medicine."

by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Oct 29, 2011 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s a 10 fucking yard throw on the run. Major pressure means you’re about to get whacked or your arm gets hit, and that did not happen. And it was high over the middle of the field. Bad luck happens when you’re high on throws over the middle.

Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?

by baseb3383 on Oct 29, 2011 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Overthrows have been his issue.

Not the worst throw in the world, but his overthrows are a problem. He’d be better off putting the ball into the grass on some of these throws that leaving it up for the potential tipped INT.

by netminder82 on Oct 29, 2011 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

It was not a very good throw. It was barely a catchable ball that was deflected into the DB's hands.

Why aren’t we talking about that downfield throw that BB lofted up in the second half? That was a terrible throw and an awful decision, but he got lucky when the ball wasn’t intercepted.

One was a 65 yard throw to a single covered WR and the other was 10 yards over the middle in traffic and BARELY hit the receiver in the hands. Hitting guys in the fingertips is not a good way to complete passes.

Neither were great throws

The DT one was definitely catchable, but it wasn’t caught (and was pick 6’d). The BB one could have been intercepted, but it wasn’t. Thankfully we a) won and b) have a much larger sample size to base the merits of each qb with.

by WeeJa on Oct 29, 2011 4:04 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Exactly.

BB’s throw was not spectacular either, but allowing a big receiver to go win a ball is at less likely to lead to INTs than the overthrown short throw. Also, compare that to DT completely missing a wide-open receiver down the seam and BB’s throw doesn’t seem too awful.

by netminder82 on Oct 29, 2011 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

You really need to watch the play again

First of all it wasn’t over the middle, it was in between the hashes and the numbers. Second of all it was on a 4th down, what else was he supposed to do, tuck it and give the ball over to the defense?

I’m watching the play again right now, it wasn’t that bad a throw. It was a little high, but that’s because he had to lob it over the LBs head on the run. WRs are supposed to come down with those. That INT is not on DT. Period. Watch the play again and tell me I’m wrong.

I think either QB is flawed.

At this point, I like either guy going forward. My hope is that they can make the simple throws, limit crucial mistakes, and hit guys when they are wide-ass-open. I don’t think we need a QB to go win us a game, just allow the offense to flow effectively.

I don’t have a DVR, but I’ll try to go back and look when I get an opportunity. I still think DT is sailing a lot of throws, but if you are confident that wasn’t on him then I will take your word for it.

And I think you’re wrong. Agree to disagree, it was a high throw in my view. WRs don’t have magnets for hands, they can’t catch balls that are on outstretched fingertips (except for Larry Fitzgerald).

Vaughn did not make a good play on that ball

It looked like his feet got tangled because he didn’t elevate or anything and kinda fell down. Look it wasn’t DT’s best pass, but it was a scrambling 4th down play. That shit happens.

Doesn’t mean DT’s spectacular throw to Tui was for naught on the day though. He wasn’t having his best day, but it was still way better than a ton of QBs at Oregon. That first half would have been a wet dream for Masoli.

I expect a lot from DT because he’s shown he can do it. He had a bad first half by his standards, and we do have a talented backup on the bench, unlike in several previous years. And yes, it was an awkward play, I just happen to believe it was a poorer throw than how you saw it.

It was an experienced QB trying to make a play to get a first before half. Just turned out bad. Still I see no reason he needed to get the hook when he’s coming back from injury and we were leading at half.

Execution was bad

but my god they ran off like 90 plays. Offense wasn’t allowed to get into a rhythm first half and defense was on the field most of the game.

Also, can we thank DAT for the spark in the 2nd half? He’s more responsible than BB.

Yes...

but everyone attributes the mythical “spark” to the QB. I’m just saying that BB made a very safe pass to DAT and let him do the rest. Then there was the kickoff return. I understand that it’s a team effort, I’m just saying this now for all the people that will call for BB to start because he gave us the “spark” we needed.

The idiot announcers were saying this a lot in the second half.

Not true

LMJ had all but a couple carries in the first half. In the second – Barner and DAT got a lot more carries and DAT got targeted a lot more. Our run game accomplished nothing in the first half. We finished with 215 yards in the game. Playcalling, adjustments, a lot of things changed.

Why are people so surprised that WSU played us tough for a half. They did the same thing to Stanford. Last year’s game was very similar….the year before that was a weird too when Masoli injured his knee. Weird stuff happens when we plays the Cougs. They seem to get up for at least a half against good teams.

WSU is the Texas Tech (under Mike Leach) of the Pac

just minus the depth and the crazy 4th down plays when on their own 15 yard line. WSU is a really great passing team (2 deep at the QB position and 1 deep at the WR and RB positions) but they are not very deep. This is why they fall apart in the second half. Think of it this way for the Ducks… If WSU plays Oregon closer than any other team for one half, there is a reason. The reason is that for WSU, like Oregon, spread and shotgun formations are their bread and butter plays, so this is something that they do regularly. Other teams may implement the spread or shotgun plays here and there, but for Oregon and WSU they are staples. When we come out on the field, these are plays that the WSU defense has seen regularly. When they come out against us, they are looking at a defense that like their own in practice has had to play against their bread and butter plays, so they know more about what to expect regularly from them.

Come along now, Cabot!

Chip isn't playing both Qbs

His motto has always been, “When you have two QBs, you have zero.” DT will start against Washington. I do think that maybe…just maybe…it shows Kelly not being so stubborn, and that on this day during this particular game, he felt the need to make a switch.

Weird shit happens when we play Wazzou…maybe he saw into the future or something and felt it best to take DT out of the game.

In all seriousness, though, his postgame comments were a bit weird. Especially with Jorgy on the radio.

This was just one if them. Thankfully it was against WSU and not any of the remaining games. Same goes for DT; first game back, wearing a knee brace, it isn’t surprising he had an off game. Majorly agree with this:

I also don’t think DT looked great. But he didn’t look bad enough to me to get the hook. His TD pass was a thing of beauty. Used his strength to avoid a sack, speed to let two guys get open, and then threw across his body on a dead run 45 yards downfield for the score. You know what Bennett does there? 6 yard run.

Is Beard even close to healthy?

Not that anyone would have a clue, but I sincerely hope he is getting better. Maldonado has done a good job of filling in, but I don’t like our chances in a 3 point game. Anything deeper than 35ish yards with him is going to be a crapshoot. Any guy who has that weak of a leg is going to drop off big time in accuracy with a deep FG attempt.

by netminder82 on Oct 29, 2011 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

Beard played in the game, so he is probably relatively healthy.

I do remember that towards the end of last season, Beard did have some accuracy trouble. Neither of those two seem like “automatic” kickers like Kai Forbath.

I've been saying for a while that Bennet might give us a better chance to win.

I commented as such a couple weeks ago and was basically told I was an idiot. My point is that Bennet is a quarterback that is very athletic. Thomas is an athlete playing quarterback. After watching Thomas miss wide open receivers crossing 7 or 8 yards in front of him, with his awkward throwing motion, I wondered if Bennet wouldn’t give us at least the performance that Thomas was.
As for CK sees them in practice and the staff knows best? Game time is different than practice. And remember, Masoli was stuck at fifth string. Injuries put him on the field, not coaches seeing something beforehand. And Masoli was the starter until he was dispatched from the team, and then everyone said, “Wow, glad he left in retrospect, because Thomas can do things Masoli couldn’t”
If Bennet has more elegibility left, and the performance is at least on par with Thomas, why not give him the reins, so a year, two years down the road he is that much better with more experience under his belt?

Do you see what I did there?

I think anyone trying to drum up some controversy about either DT or James is silly. I also think that our offense in the first half was bad but I think folks forget that Oregon’s MO is meh first half, set everything on fire even the lighter second half.

And that td throw by DT was fantastic. And I’m very happy with a W here.

What about our defense?

No one on here has really talked about our pass defense. I think the quarterback thing is a small issue compared to how we got picked apart today. Our tackling was poor, we were caught out of position, and to me it looked like a complete lack of effort. If we defend the pass like that the next few games we could be in serious trouble.

I think that anyone who thinks BB should start

are looking purely at physical skill. DT isn’t actually physically very talented, not very fast, decent arm while BB is super fast with a nice long ball. However, DT is such an amazing decision maker that the whole team prospers from his management.
This is despite DT being a black QB and BB being white, but I’m sure some bad announcer will talk about DT’s athleticism and BB being a gym rat or some shit

by OregonNYC on Oct 29, 2011 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

No.

DT’s td pass requires a fair but of talent.

by builds character on Oct 29, 2011 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Talent yes, but his arm isn't great. He needs to start his motion from his hip to gun it

but it is seeing the where to throw it and how to stay alive, where the LOS was etc that made that play and why we win so much with him

by OregonNYC on Oct 29, 2011 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Two things

1. Still no. That’s a crazy long accurate throw on the run.
2. But yes, bb’s arm is better and he throws a prettier ball all the time.

I think we probably actually agree on this. DT is quite talented but he performs far above his physical talent level which is lower than, say bb (/troll face).

by builds character on Oct 29, 2011 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

The main problem with Bennett, is that people look and say, “ooooh, look at the purty throw and fast run” and completely ignore every other aspect that goes into playing QB.

Great defenses will eat him alive right now.

Well, the suggestion you made was that signing Keenan Allen was a bad idea because Zach Maynard came with him.

If one of our backup QBs was actually good, thus relegating Maynard to the bench, then we’d still have a spectacular WR.

I mean, if Oregon could take Maynard right now and get Allen with him, they’d take Maynard, make him the 5th string QB, and unleash more hell on Pac-12 defenses.

I think that QB scholarships are too valuable to be giving away, even in exchange for a great WR. It doesn’t matter if Maynard is playing or not. The fact that Cal was so weak at QB, and still gave Maynard a scholarship at the position makes that decision look even worse.

Out of 85 schollys on the Cal team, not one of those players is worse than Maynard? It’s not worth taking a flier with one scholarship on Maynard? Is there a limit to how many quarterbacks a team can have on scholarship?

No, there’s no limit on QB scholarships, though most teams have between 3-5.

Is Maynard worth a flier? I say no. It’s an indictment of the Cal program that 1) they had an extra scholarship that they couldn’t give to a better player, and 2) he actually played a significant amount of time.

by Old Ducker on Oct 29, 2011 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you mean, aren't high?

You do realize:

1) LSU – has to play BAMA
2) BAMA – has to play LSU

—> One of these teams will lose and will not be eligible for the Natty because they won’t be a conference champion.

3) fBSU – enough said. Not sure if we would jump them or if we “absolutely” need them to lose

4) Oklahoma St -still has to play Oklahoma

5) Stanford – If we were to beat them we obviously move above them

6) Clemson lost tonight

So really we need Oklahoma St to lose and we may “control our own destiny” in a sense (this is a stretch, but not impossible) with needing to jump fBSU, and then maybe also needing a second Oklahoma loss.

Two weeks ago this was crazy talk. Now, I think the least likely part of this whole scenario playing out the exact way we need it to is: us winning out.

by NICKPAPAGEORGIOTHEDUCK on Oct 29, 2011 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry if I came off a little snoody with that comment.

It is my excitement coming out at how we have looked thus far. And with Stanford just winning this game, we would have a very marquee loss and a very marquee win if we were to beat Stanford.

In fact, if LSU beats Bama and wins out and we win out, I’m going to go ahead and be the first to say that all we need is an Okl St loss to play in the Natty (even though this contradicts what I thought 8 days ago).

Since they take into account the number of points in the polls, we need to be a solid #2. We can’t be sharing votes with another team, because our computer polls will be rather weak.

What will make this worse, is that we probably won’t be #3 in the polls, but depending on how many other one-loss teams there are, we could end up 5th or 6th. We will need to have a commanding lead in the polls, and I just don’t see that happening if Oklahoma wins out.

Assuming my math isn't wrong

(And it probably is, but only in a few small spots, so it should be generally accurate)

36 rushes, 8.7 yards per rush, long of 62 and 4 TD
23 receptions, 14.3 yards per catch, long of 69 and 5 TD
20 kick returns, 24.4 yards per return, long of 93 and 1 TD
2 punt returns, 27 yards per return, long of 48 and 0 TD
