ATQ Blogpoll: Where does Oregon stand in the national picture?
I was talking to ntrebon yesterday about where the Ducks stand in the national picture. While I think Oregon's a legitimate top 10 team this season, he expressed doubt that Oregon is at that level. I think that there are a lot of Duck fans that share that sentiment. With Oregon losing to both LSU and Auburn in the past year and on the biggest stages possible, the Ducks have faltered.
But the way things are breaking in college football, there is a large drop-off between the top 7 and the rest of the country. I think that teams like Stanford, Oregon, and Oklahoma have their flaws, but they are all far superior to teams like Arkansas, Clemson, and South Carolina.
In this week's poll, I have the Ducks at #6, just like the other polls. Watching this team, it doesn't necessarily feel like a team that should be ranked that high, until you start comparing the Ducks to the rest of the semi-contenders. There are a lot of flawed teams near the top of the rankings, and the Ducks are one of them.
As far as the BCS picture goes, the Ducks have a shot at getting back to the title game, but my bet is that it will come down to the LSU/Alabama and Oklahoma/Oklahoma State winners. We're in for a fun next few weeks as these teams fight for the conference championships.
The full poll is after the jump. Leave your comments on the poll, as well as your thoughts on where the Ducks sit nationally. GO DUCKS!

I'm not sure that the top 7 is the line where the big drop off occurs
I think you have the top 4 in that first echelon because they simply haven’t lost yet and they have each been challenged. Then you have teams 5 – 12 (minus the gamecocks) who could all beat each other at any time on any field. After that, it gets pretty muddled. Some of the teams 12-25 are going to get better as the season goes and the wheels will fall off of some of the others (injuries are usually a factor).
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
I think there’s a line after 2, and another line after 7. It’s easy to rank those teams for now, but all those teams are not on the same level as LSU and Bama.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Top 2 then
I really don’t know about ok st. It seems like folks are under rating them if that’s possible for a team ranked 3.
After that I don’t think folks give Oregon enough credit for how they played against lsu. DAT I’m his first college game had a couple bad fumbles but remember LSU on,y drove the field once on our D. You absolutely have to give them credit for forcing the turnovers but that game was much closer than folks seem to remember.
Stanford is right up there with Oregon in my mind as is Oklahoma. Boise state is difficult because of SoS concerns. Just looking at their resume their best win is Georgia and while that’s improving the SEC isn’t particularly deep this year so those wins aren’t all that great. Oklahoma got hit with a motivated team who took their shot when Oklahma was looking past them. No doubt they have secondary concerns, just like Oregon, but that offense is quite good.
I think ok st probably wins out and goes against lsu. But I’m certainly not putting any money on it. I think Oregon beats Stanford as their run d has looked pretty porous and that’s going to be a real issue for them. Also I’m a huge homer.
As far as losses to auburn and LSU go, until there are >40 losses I’m not going to consider it statistically significant (also we’re getting better o line recruits and that’s what I thought the issue was n both games).

Wisconsin lost to Mich State and Ohio State
Michigan has only lost to Mich State. Bad as both have looked at various stages, I’d have to rank Michigan over Wisconsin at this point, personally.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
From a Michigander's perspective...
MSU absolutely dismantled UM, the same way they did last season (which began the Wolverine’s decline). The Spartans showed the country how to handle Robinson’s one-pony-trick routine. The Wolverines haven’t had a lot of competition, really. Beating Purdue, or Central/Western Michigan does not make you elite. The Badger’s defense is superior to UM, and in a game, I’m going with the red.
Ducks #8 in BCS (fell a spot)
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
Complete crap that we're behind Arkansas, who has barely beaten Vandy and Ole Miss the past 2 weeks.
I’d even argue that we deserve to be above Oklahoma. What the hell does beating Kansas State prove? Here’s a hint-K-State isn’t actually a great team. They lost to freaking Texas Tech, who proceeded to get blown out by Iowa State.

of course we deserve to be ahead of Oklahoma
Our resumes are fairly similar, except we lost at a neutral site to the best team in the country, and they lost, AT HOME, to a 30 point underdog that got routed at home by Iowa State the next week.

Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
I agree, Jared
Oregon is a very good team, but they have a lot of flaws that they didn’t have last year.
I would rather win a Rose Bowl (and no matter who we would potentially play, we would have a great shot at winnng that one), than lose the Natty again. But the Okie/Oklahoma State winner will be over us. Deservedly so if it were to be the Pokes, not sure if it were OU.
--Dave
Addicted to Quack, your friendly, neighborhood Oregon Ducks blog
If Oregon beats Stanford to finish 12-1, and OU beats toOSU to finish 11-1,
They both have really good arguments. Undefeated toOSU is a very easy call. With OU, Neither really has a resume edge, especially considering who OU lost to. But whichever OK school wins, you’re right, they probably both go. If anything, if teams are equal, OU helps the BCS avoid either a rematch with LSU, or sending a team ahead of LSU who LSU beat in the regular season.
Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.
I don't think OU has a great argument over any one loss team
when their one loss was at home to a 30 point underdog. A championship worthy team simply doesn’t lose that game, period.

Rose Bowl
this is what Im talking about! I want us to get there and absolutely demolish whoever we would play. I dont want to play LSU again or have to face Bama. Were a young and talented team and will have another shot at the Natty down the road.

Well yes
If the options are 1) Win a Rose Bowl or 2) lose a NCG then yes I want to win the Rose Bowl. But there’s no guaranteed outcome. I, in my humble opinion, would want to go up against the best and beat the best. I think we have as good as chance to beat LSU/Bama or the Big 12 champion as anybody. If there’s a chance, I want to take it.

Do you believe Oklahoma will? Oklahoma State? fBSU? Should we just crown the winner of LSU/Bama the BCS winner after next Saturday? I think we can beat LSU or Bama. Any given Saturday if you will. We played LSU a lot closer than anyone else has, and now we’ve added lots of game experience to our young members. Will we be favored? Hell no. Fuck, I’ll be full on PANICed for the game. But I think it’s possible. Our loss to LSU has as much to do with them shutting down our run game, as it does our idiocy with ball protection (Barner on the punt return, DAT x2)
If there’s a chance, then I want to take it.
by INducktrination on Oct 30, 2011 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
I can give 110 reasons (yards in penalties) and 4 other reasons (stupid turnovers)
The Ducks outgained LSU and could do so again. If they remove the dumb mistakes they could beat either LSU or Bama in the fashion that they should beat either of those teams. Both of those teams are very disciplined, but if the ducks play with some discipline they beat either of those teams.
Come along now, Cabot!
Can someone explain how beating Vandy by 3 is better than beating WSU by 15, enough so to jump a spot?

Which division is better – Pac-12 South, or SEC East?
Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.
Hmm...
South Carolina/Arizona State
Georgia/USC
Florida/UCLA
Vanderbilt/Utah
Tennessee/Arizona
Kentucky/Colorado
I think all of those would be pretty good games. I’d probably give the slight advantage to the Pac-12 South, though.
Or would I? I think each conference would win 3 in those matchups. I dunno. Ask me something easier.

find me a team that hasn’t played poorly in an easy win this year… you don’t downgrade a team for winning by two TD’s… that is just stupid.

Biggest game of Oregon's season was Illinois vs ASU
if Oregon ends up winning out. 2 wins over a legit top 10 and 11-2 (only losses both to Oregon), and a legit top 5 Stanford who finished 11-1 (only loss to Oregon)…
If ASU beats Illinois- I think Oregon controls their own destiny for the BCS right now outside of Okie State. As it is- it seems like Oklahoma, Okie State, Bama all will finish ahead of Oregon if they finish with one loss.
I don't think we are not an NCG caliber team.
Okie State is playing way above us right now with a top 10 SOS, Bama and LSU are just that. Rose Bowl or Alamo is where I think we’re heading and where I think we could compete.
Hoover: They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal!
Okie State is a mirage
just like Oklahoma. Oregon would have a very good shot at either team. LSU and Bama have a talent edge… Okie State gave up 500+ yards on Saturday- Oregon would give them a lot to deal with and quite likely would be favored in the game.
Oregon had a good shot at LSU

As for the “if it wasn’t for” well sure but LSU had just as many of those and they won, end of story. So, all I’m saying is we have some big areas of improvement now add a younger DB lineup and this stretch is gonna be hard.
Love my ducks but not homer.
Hoover: They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal!
Do you know what OSU's best win is at this point?
Texas. A very average Texas team. They barely beat both Texas and A&M. Their SOS is BS.
Just based on straight-up quality...rank the top ten teams in America. Do not, for instance, penalize Boise for not playing anyone.
1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma State
4. Oklahoma
5. Stanford
6. Oregon
7. Boise State
8. Arkansas
9. Nebraska
10. Clemson

Are we as good as last year
I agree with those who don’t see us in the same class as last year’s team. One way of thinking about it is this—what do we do better this year than last year? What do we do worse? Thanks to DeAnthony, our RBs are even better (who thought this was possible). Our punting and kick coverage has been great. But that’s about it. QB has not improved. WRs are vastly worse. TE is the same. OL is maybe the same, maybe slightly worse. DBs are worse. LBs are not bad certainly but not as good as last year’s senior laden group. DL is probably slightly worse.
In short, I think we are going to scorch Washington, but I worry greatly about both Stanford and USC.
I think we have about an 85% chance of beating Washington, a 70% chance of beating USC, and a 50% chance of beating Stanford.

Stanford lost more from last year
it’s tough to compare year to year. I think Bennett is a defnite upgrade as the #2 to an injured Nate Costa- and a freshman named Bennett we are trying to redshirt.
Blowing off DAT- as not that important is a mistake. Kid scores at least 2 TD’s every game… It makes a major impact. Receiver is the biggest problem- and the closest guy to filling Maehl’s shoes has been DAT himself in some games… Huge drop-off from Tuinei being the #3 to the #1…
Defense- I don’t think we are as good. Cliff Harris, Bair, Rowe, Spitty P, Matthews, TJack III, thats a lot of very important cogs to replace…
Having said that- does that mean we can’t beat Stanford? Or win 2 Pac-12 home games? Kelly’s never lost a game at Autzen. Oregon has a very good shot in all 4 games- will be favored by 2 TD’s or more in 3 out of 4 games left…
Remember that awesome tackle that De’Anthony made in punt coverage as a gunner yesterday? His impact is being felt in so many different facets of the game-the running game, the passing game, the return unit, and punt coverage.

The Oregon Ducks have scored 30 or more points in each of their past 25 home games. That is the longest streak in the AP Poll era (since 1936) and one of two active streaks longer than 20 games (TCU, 24 straight). No other team in the AP Poll era has had a streak of at least 20 such games. Good news for Oregon: This week’s opponent, the Washington State Cougars, are allowing 30.4 PPG this season. The next longest such streak after Oregon & TCU? Oklahoma (19 games from 2006-09).
