I want a Rose Bowl victory!

And I don’t think we can beat Wisconsin. They present the same problems that most the teams beat us have, good QB play and huge O and D lines.

by OfficerCosta on Dec 3, 2011 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

We can score points on Wisconsin.

Sparty has the better D, and a better chance of dragging us into a Big Ten-style game. Wiscy is gonna want to trade shots with us, and it’ll be entertaining as hell.

PELICAN

Statistically, Michigan State’s D matches up with Alabama’s and LSU’s. Wisconsin’s is in the same ballpark as our defense.

I'm surprized people are voting MSU

based on the reasoning that MSU would be an easier game. I have that same assumption, but UO – Wisc would be a great game. I’ve heard people say MSU’s D is one of the best, but based on the largely pathetic Big 10 offenses, I am guessing their stats are a bit of a mirage.

Wisconsin would make me very nervous...

Nick Toon is a freaking giant and I think our corners would have too much trouble covering him. Wilson w/ enough protection I think would pick us apart down field. Too much like USC for my taste. But Wisconsin’s D may open things up for us. Oregon would need to jump on them early to win like they did against Stanford.

I'm sure this was covered in the earlier thread, but

did any of the poll voters honestly believe that Houston was actually the 6th best team in the country? I know this sounds like 20-20 hindsight, but I think Vegas would have practically all of the top-15 teams favored over Houston, even before they lost today.

It looks like Wisconsin is prone to deception, counters, etc. They don’t appear to have elite defensive tackles which has killed us the last few years. I think we match up better on the edges against Michigan State so far defensively

yeah, defensively I feel like Wisconsin’s balance and size helps to neutralize our strengths on defense. Because of the mobility of their QB as well as the strength of Ball, I think they would have a lot of success against our defense, especially banging through the line. of course they will start having at least some success offensively rushing the ball

by Xenocide23 on Dec 3, 2011 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

Statistically we still did fine

but our defense is basically made to stop people after a few successes. When they start at the 40 or the 20, that doesn’t happen.

our rushing defense was fine against Stanford or Washington. It wasn’t even bad against LSU. I don’t fear a running attack. I fear great WRs – and Wisconsin doesn’t have that.

And you're still wrong

Speed of play is fairly slow for us this year too; we sub out all the time. That’s not how we beat teams and it’s not why teams have a better time against us.

The advantage we have is that we have a few formations and run a lot of very misdirectional plays out of them. An undisciplined defense or one that errs on one side or another will get beat. When you have 4 weeks to prepare for those reads and those reactions, it becomes a lot easier to handle. The reads on Oregon are idfferent than basically any other team most teams play every season. That’s why it’s tough.

But having a month? Helps a lot.

That being said, the teams that ‘beat’ us after long hiatus have a single common thread: They have beaten us at the point of attacks. Period. They are able to disrupt without having to read. They beat us at the line and beat us hat on hat. It’s as simple as that. And while Wisconsin is a good team, I don’t think they’ll consistently beat us hat on hat.

How is Montee Ball not a Heisman frontrunner again?

by Jonathan Wright on Dec 3, 2011 6:02 PM PST reply actions

Because

People think he’s more of a product of his OL: he has little breakaway speed and so few long runs and he doesn’t actually break many tackles.

by ursula on Dec 3, 2011 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

You can always argue that big rushing numbers are largely due to a great O-line unless your talking about a Barry Sanders type player. Richardson is not a Barry Sanders type player.

Per the National Football Post:

*If Oregon coach Chip Kelly wants to give the NFL a try, he likely will have an opportunity. NFL teams are buzzing about Kelly as a head coaching candidate for a number of reasons. The success the Broncos are having offensively makes Kelly’s unconventional offense more sellable. And the success Jim Harbaugh is having with the 49ers lessens the stigma about college coaches being unable to make the transition to the NFL.

"Last time I checked, there is no ‘Hall of Average.’ " Chip Kelly

by PondJunky on Dec 3, 2011 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

Let's give Chip some credit

It’s not like he’s been coaching an FBS team for a long time, he just got here. He hasn’t even been playing with a team full of his own recruits. There are still major questions about his style. I think he’s a much more calculating person than he is impulsive. He’ll install his system at Oregon and test it thoroughly before he tries in the the NFL, which is a much less forgiving league.

by chemduck on Dec 3, 2011 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

I would say a big chunk of the team is his recruits

As OC in 07 and 08 he was responsible for recruiting on offense, not so much for the 07 class but the 08 for sure. How many RS seniors on offense this year?

The "Beano Cook" of ATQ

by benzduck on Dec 3, 2011 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

I don't buy it

The Broncos are not having success offensively. Their offense is doing the absolute bare minimum. The Broncos defense is the cause of their success. Tebow may be winning, but they are mainly winning in spite of him, not because of him.

I do think Chip could be successful in the NFL though, as he does have the Harbaugh type of coaching in getting his players to buy into what’s selling. And Chip is one hell of a coach. But I don’t buy that its because of the Broncos offense. If he goes, I’ll become an instant fan of whatever team he’s on, unless its the Packers… and maybe even then.

by INducktrination on Dec 3, 2011 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

Denver’s offense is designed to minimize the risk of a fuck up. It’s not a productive offense and is nothing like Chip’s offense.

The "Beano Cook" of ATQ

by benzduck on Dec 3, 2011 6:20 PM PST up reply actions

My take on that line

The talk about the Denver/Tebow offense is more about the fact that its different; an alternative way to winning if you don;t have a great QB. The idea of a running QB in the NFL has been out of favor for, jeez, longer than I’ve been alive (54 years) but Denver is showing a rudimentary option QB with minimal passing ability (along with a good defense) can possibly manage to be a better than .500 team. I would add that Cam Newton, obviously a better passer than Tebow, is on target to set a new single season record for QB rushing TD’s.

I don’t think anyone thinks that Tebow is the only reason why Denver is winning-see earlier in the link I cited. But they see the option as a possibility now and if so then logic dictates that you look to the HC in Eugene for the latest word on what to do. And if you are an NFL team that does not have a Brees or Manning, you need to find another way…

Also Jason Avant is our 3rd best WR, believe it or not but Steve Smith is 6th on the depth chart, Riley Cooper & Chad Hall are ahead of him, he probably put himself there with the most idiotic play I’ve ever seen when he dropped one yard before the 1st down line in the Arizona game but I still want him ahead of Cooper & especially Hall.

And, you are right about Vick.

by ursula on Dec 3, 2011 6:40 PM PST up reply actions

And it's misinformed and wrong

The reason that Oregon works is because of the practice restrictions, the rep restrictions, the lack of discipline on D and the lack of speed. Combine that with a set of OLinemen and receivers that aren’t typical in the NFL (speed for OLine along with fitness, blocking receivers more than catching) and QBs that are going to get hit a lot and you have nothing like what any team in the NFL has right now.

It’s a solution for a college system that limits practices, limits study and has students instead of professionals playing. It’s not a solution for the pros with massive amounts of film study, practice, concentration and dedication. If it works it’ll work because your players are better than theirs, period – and that’s true of any scheme.

Chip would be an utter fool to go. It would be a huge mistake. Fortunately, the NFL is hugely risk averse and the chances of someone like Chip making the transition are insanely low.

not trying to start a fight or being a troll I'm just asking a question

I always like to learn how other fan base think so here is my question; how would duck nation feel if he duck lose the rose bowl? I mean I’d love for the beavers to even be close to were the ducks are right now but I think that it would be hard to take an other big game lose. I think that the duck do have the player to take it this year but as with anything there is a chance they could lose.

CK is still very new at being a head coach (at any level).

He keeps learning and improving with every game, just like the players do. You might question some of the specific decisions he makes in a game, but it would be foolish to question his ability to continue improving the team. I’m very confident that he’ll deliver a National Championship in the next five-or-so years.

I don't question his ability to coach and

I understand the idea of teams have a long time to get ready for the O. One would think know this he could put in more rinks to help change this up a little. No being a uber fan of the duck it seem that in many of the games the duck just shoot themselves in the foot so much that it makes it truly hard to come back from . this can range form slow starts to giving up the ball

Not really

Losing three bowl games is not the end of the world. Especially in how we’ve lost them. Losing by 3 as time expires in the national championship is statistically about as relevant as winning by 3; it means two great teams played each other hard and close. I don’t feel bad about that in the slightest.

Now, if we went to the Rose Bowl and got completely embarrassed, that’d bother me. If it was like Boise State in 09 where it felt like we were just outmatched in every way that’d bother me. But I don’t think that’ll happen.

Put it another way: if we go to a BCS bowl game every single year and lose every single year I’ll be happy.

We're getting tired of hearing how the Ducks can't win on the big stage.

A win would put a stop to it. A loss would pretty much confirm it. It’s going to be a big game.

It's annoying but kinda silly

It’s like the folks that said Peyton Manning can’t win the big game. What they meant is that Peyton Manning can’t win ALL the big games, nicely forgetting all the games that were big that they did win.

Oregon has walloped Stanford twice in huge games. Oregon has dominated USC twice in huge games. Oregon went to Tennessee and knocked them for a loop. Oregon has lost to the national champion by 3 points (sort of like Alabama did this year), lost to a very good Ohio State team by 9 in a game that was by no means a blowout, lost to LSU in a very competitive game that was a lot closer than it looked, lost to USC in a game that was ultimately meaningless for Oregon and lost to Boise State and Stanford in 2009. Of all those losses the only one that still bothers me is Boise State. The other accomplishments – the overtime win against Arizona, the beating of OSU to take the Rose, the domination of Stanford twice, beating USC twice in a row – those are big games too.

We’re not as good on offense. Without a reliable receiver we aren’t as 2-dimensional.

The biggest thing I worry about is that we’re not as consistent as we were last year. That’s what really bugs me; that for the last three games we’ve played so flat and meh, and yet are able to go out and dominate Stanford. Then again, we can be less consistent against a team like Wisconsin and still win. Wisconsin is not remotely the caliber on offense or defense as Auburn was.

2. Bama
3. OK State
4. Stanford
5. Oregon
6. Michigan State
7. Georgia
8. Boise State

(My best guess, mostly just an example).

If you’re hoping that OK ST rising to #3 in the polls is going to be sufficient to overtake Bama in the BCS overall rankings, don’t think so.

OK ST will not have enough advantage in the computers to overcome Bama. The only way OK ST overtakes Bama in the BCS standings is for the voters to vote them above Bama. At least, that was my takeaway from the incessant ESECPN blathering (mostly Brad Edwards) all of this past week.

Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!

But how many of those V-Tech votes have V-tech at number 2?

And V-tech losing would only make it easier to rise up.

Plus there may be some voters who are a little iffy on the whole rematch thing who have Bama at #2, and this huge blow-out may sway them.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin is a good team but they are most like Stanford when compared with other teams in PAC 12. If we stop Ball we win the Rose Bowl.

by totalduck on Dec 3, 2011 8:56 PM PST reply actions

but their TEs aren't anywhere comparable.

Plus, Luck’s the better QB. Ball wasn’t very impressive tonight, but he’s better than Stanford’s RB, and considering how UCLA and USC were able to run on us, I’m a bit worried.

by Brass-billed on Dec 3, 2011 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe but....

They may a little bit better than Stanford….but not much. They certainly don’t have any wide out like the two boys from USC who scorched us.

by totalduck on Dec 3, 2011 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

No, they don’t. But Wilson can stretch out plays like Barkley couldn’t.

Wisconsin is susceptible to pressure, so it will be interesting to see what Aliotti dials up.

Defenses always seem to play better in bowl games

so I’m glad we get the team with the (supposedly) poorer defense. After this game, though, who’s to say. But the Wiscy D sure reminds me of the Stanford D.

But I’m glad we get Wisconsin. MSU was a slightly worse matchup, especially with their defense. They had the line to seriously slow down our offense.

Wisconsin doesn’t. Oregon and Wisconsin both have great offense. Both are in the top 5 nationally. But Oregon has a significant edge defensively.
