I want a Rose Bowl victory!
And I don’t think we can beat Wisconsin. They present the same problems that most the teams beat us have, good QB play and huge O and D lines.
We can score points on Wisconsin.
Sparty has the better D, and a better chance of dragging us into a Big Ten-style game. Wiscy is gonna want to trade shots with us, and it’ll be entertaining as hell.

PELICAN
Statistically, Michigan State’s D matches up with Alabama’s and LSU’s. Wisconsin’s is in the same ballpark as our defense.

Wisconsin looks very similiar to Stanford to me
big and powerful but not fast enough on defense to stop us
Better receivers and a better running game
I have to be honest, my panic level is pretty high right now and we don’t even know who we’re facing. HRD do you have some pills for this?

I'm surprized people are voting MSU
based on the reasoning that MSU would be an easier game. I have that same assumption, but UO – Wisc would be a great game. I’ve heard people say MSU’s D is one of the best, but based on the largely pathetic Big 10 offenses, I am guessing their stats are a bit of a mirage.

Helmet stickers... bah.
Herbie is explaining that now...
Wisconsin would make me very nervous...
Nick Toon is a freaking giant and I think our corners would have too much trouble covering him. Wilson w/ enough protection I think would pick us apart down field. Too much like USC for my taste. But Wisconsin’s D may open things up for us. Oregon would need to jump on them early to win like they did against Stanford.

It looks like Wisconsin is prone to deception, counters, etc. They don’t appear to have elite defensive tackles which has killed us the last few years. I think we match up better on the edges against Michigan State so far defensively

We will have a huge speed advantage against both teams
And I don’t think size will be much of a factor on either side of the ball against either team either
that remains to be seen. I don’t think we can just run around the edges on either of these guys all day. Need more data before I agree with “huge advantage”

yeah, defensively I feel like Wisconsin’s balance and size helps to neutralize our strengths on defense. Because of the mobility of their QB as well as the strength of Ball, I think they would have a lot of success against our defense, especially banging through the line. Kind of reminds me of the Toby Gerhart Stanford team down in Palo Alto

Defensively we handled Stanford quite well
Wisconsin has better receivers but I think they are similiar in style
Well when your defense is on the field for 15 minutes straight
of course they will start having at least some success offensively rushing the ball
Statistically we still did fine
but our defense is basically made to stop people after a few successes. When they start at the 40 or the 20, that doesn’t happen.
our rushing defense was fine against Stanford or Washington. It wasn’t even bad against LSU. I don’t fear a running attack. I fear great WRs – and Wisconsin doesn’t have that.
don't you mean
Wisconsin has receivers? Stanford has Whalen and the frosh Montgomery. Alonzo could outrun Whalen, and Dungy can catch better than Montgomery.
Wisconsin’s passing game isn’t really close to Stanford, even with Nick Toon

And you're still wrong
Speed of play is fairly slow for us this year too; we sub out all the time. That’s not how we beat teams and it’s not why teams have a better time against us.
The advantage we have is that we have a few formations and run a lot of very misdirectional plays out of them. An undisciplined defense or one that errs on one side or another will get beat. When you have 4 weeks to prepare for those reads and those reactions, it becomes a lot easier to handle. The reads on Oregon are idfferent than basically any other team most teams play every season. That’s why it’s tough.
But having a month? Helps a lot.
That being said, the teams that ‘beat’ us after long hiatus have a single common thread: They have beaten us at the point of attacks. Period. They are able to disrupt without having to read. They beat us at the line and beat us hat on hat. It’s as simple as that. And while Wisconsin is a good team, I don’t think they’ll consistently beat us hat on hat.
Disagree with the first part
Agree with the second.

I'd much rather play Michigan State
Russel Wilson and Montee Ball scare me.
How is Montee Ball not a Heisman frontrunner again?
Because
People think he’s more of a product of his OL: he has little breakaway speed and so few long runs and he doesn’t actually break many tackles.
You can always argue that big rushing numbers are largely due to a great O-line unless your talking about a Barry Sanders type player. Richardson is not a Barry Sanders type player.
Montee Ball’s stats are ridiculous. More yards on less carries with a lot more TDs.

Here's something you don't want to read
Per the National Football Post:
*If Oregon coach Chip Kelly wants to give the NFL a try, he likely will have an opportunity. NFL teams are buzzing about Kelly as a head coaching candidate for a number of reasons. The success the Broncos are having offensively makes Kelly’s unconventional offense more sellable. And the success Jim Harbaugh is having with the 49ers lessens the stigma about college coaches being unable to make the transition to the NFL.
You're right, I didn't want to read that.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
He'd be a fool to go to the NFL.

I’m not concerned. CK is a teacher and seems to enjoy that aspect over all else. You don’t teach jack in the NFL. We didn’t see a bunch of wildcat coaches get NFL jobs just because the Dolphins were using it effectively. NFL teams will adjust

Let's give Chip some credit
It’s not like he’s been coaching an FBS team for a long time, he just got here. He hasn’t even been playing with a team full of his own recruits. There are still major questions about his style. I think he’s a much more calculating person than he is impulsive. He’ll install his system at Oregon and test it thoroughly before he tries in the the NFL, which is a much less forgiving league.
I would say a big chunk of the team is his recruits
As OC in 07 and 08 he was responsible for recruiting on offense, not so much for the 07 class but the 08 for sure. How many RS seniors on offense this year?
The "Beano Cook" of ATQ
I don't buy it
The Broncos are not having success offensively. Their offense is doing the absolute bare minimum. The Broncos defense is the cause of their success. Tebow may be winning, but they are mainly winning in spite of him, not because of him.
I do think Chip could be successful in the NFL though, as he does have the Harbaugh type of coaching in getting his players to buy into what’s selling. And Chip is one hell of a coach. But I don’t buy that its because of the Broncos offense. If he goes, I’ll become an instant fan of whatever team he’s on, unless its the Packers… and maybe even then.
by INducktrination on Dec 3, 2011 6:18 PM PST up reply actions
Agreed
Denver’s offense is designed to minimize the risk of a fuck up. It’s not a productive offense and is nothing like Chip’s offense.
The "Beano Cook" of ATQ
My take on that line
The talk about the Denver/Tebow offense is more about the fact that its different; an alternative way to winning if you don;t have a great QB. The idea of a running QB in the NFL has been out of favor for, jeez, longer than I’ve been alive (54 years) but Denver is showing a rudimentary option QB with minimal passing ability (along with a good defense) can possibly manage to be a better than .500 team. I would add that Cam Newton, obviously a better passer than Tebow, is on target to set a new single season record for QB rushing TD’s.
I don’t think anyone thinks that Tebow is the only reason why Denver is winning-see earlier in the link I cited. But they see the option as a possibility now and if so then logic dictates that you look to the HC in Eugene for the latest word on what to do. And if you are an NFL team that does not have a Brees or Manning, you need to find another way…
That wasn’t bad for me at least compared to Andy Reid might want to keep Juan Castillo next year, I love Andy but he better make a change at DC
the eagles probably makes sense
they got vick, jackson, maclin, steve smith, and mccoy, thats a spread lineup with celek.
Reid isn't going anywhere...
Also Jason Avant is our 3rd best WR, believe it or not but Steve Smith is 6th on the depth chart, Riley Cooper & Chad Hall are ahead of him, he probably put himself there with the most idiotic play I’ve ever seen when he dropped one yard before the 1st down line in the Arizona game but I still want him ahead of Cooper & especially Hall.
I’ve also wanted the Eagles to adopt some of the fast break we run at Oregon, I think we would be deadly doing that
Yes
Eagles fans (myself included) always bitch and moan about Reid, but it’s only been very recently that he hasn’t delivered. Another bad season, he’s probably out. But I bet he makes it to next year.

Sure do, one bad year shouldn’t mean Reid is gone even if he made the idiotic decision to hire Castillo as DC. I also don’t put everything on Reid the Eagles have had bad luck with turnovers a lot of the INTs have been tipped although some of those tips are on the players since they inexplicably tipped some of them instead of catching it
And, the eagles lost to the seagulls
"What you are entrusted to do as a coach is to create an environment where your players have a chance to be successful." CHIP KELLY
Yeah
Vince Young as a pocket passer? Yeah- 4 interceptions. Running the option with McCoy and those receivers downfield? Scary as hell.
And it's misinformed and wrong
The reason that Oregon works is because of the practice restrictions, the rep restrictions, the lack of discipline on D and the lack of speed. Combine that with a set of OLinemen and receivers that aren’t typical in the NFL (speed for OLine along with fitness, blocking receivers more than catching) and QBs that are going to get hit a lot and you have nothing like what any team in the NFL has right now.
It’s a solution for a college system that limits practices, limits study and has students instead of professionals playing. It’s not a solution for the pros with massive amounts of film study, practice, concentration and dedication. If it works it’ll work because your players are better than theirs, period – and that’s true of any scheme.
Chip would be an utter fool to go. It would be a huge mistake. Fortunately, the NFL is hugely risk averse and the chances of someone like Chip making the transition are insanely low.
I'm feeling better about Oregon's chances against either of these teams.
No defense anywhere to be seen.

I always like to learn how other fan base think so here is my question; how would duck nation feel if he duck lose the rose bowl? I mean I’d love for the beavers to even be close to were the ducks are right now but I think that it would be hard to take an other big game lose. I think that the duck do have the player to take it this year but as with anything there is a chance they could lose.

would you start to question chip a little
I mean it would be like become the new tosu or OK, but one can’t argue with where chip has taken this team. I mean who could have imaged that the duck could be flying so high right now
oh, them beavers
CK is still very new at being a head coach (at any level).
He keeps learning and improving with every game, just like the players do. You might question some of the specific decisions he makes in a game, but it would be foolish to question his ability to continue improving the team. I’m very confident that he’ll deliver a National Championship in the next five-or-so years.
"You could almost imagine Ducks coach Chip Kelly walking to midfield among the bloodied Bruins and shouting in his best gladiator voice, 'Are you not entertained?'" - Ted Miller
I don't question his ability to coach and
I understand the idea of teams have a long time to get ready for the O. One would think know this he could put in more rinks to help change this up a little. No being a uber fan of the duck it seem that in many of the games the duck just shoot themselves in the foot so much that it makes it truly hard to come back from . this can range form slow starts to giving up the ball
oh, them beavers
Nope, not gonna start questioning Chip
Especially not with this team, which was expected to be rebuilding on the O-line, the WR corps, and the LBs. Wiscy was a National Title contender before dropping 2 games to last-second hail-Mary’s. No shame in losing to quality opponents.

by Jonathan Wright on Dec 3, 2011 6:30 PM PST up reply actions
Not really
Losing three bowl games is not the end of the world. Especially in how we’ve lost them. Losing by 3 as time expires in the national championship is statistically about as relevant as winning by 3; it means two great teams played each other hard and close. I don’t feel bad about that in the slightest.
Now, if we went to the Rose Bowl and got completely embarrassed, that’d bother me. If it was like Boise State in 09 where it felt like we were just outmatched in every way that’d bother me. But I don’t think that’ll happen.
Put it another way: if we go to a BCS bowl game every single year and lose every single year I’ll be happy.
unless it's the national championship i never get heartbroken over bowl games
it’s like a bonus exhibition in a fun place. the worst part is knowing that other people in the media put so much stock in to these isolated games
We're getting tired of hearing how the Ducks can't win on the big stage.
A win would put a stop to it. A loss would pretty much confirm it. It’s going to be a big game.
"You could almost imagine Ducks coach Chip Kelly walking to midfield among the bloodied Bruins and shouting in his best gladiator voice, 'Are you not entertained?'" - Ted Miller
It's annoying but kinda silly
It’s like the folks that said Peyton Manning can’t win the big game. What they meant is that Peyton Manning can’t win ALL the big games, nicely forgetting all the games that were big that they did win.
Oregon has walloped Stanford twice in huge games. Oregon has dominated USC twice in huge games. Oregon went to Tennessee and knocked them for a loop. Oregon has lost to the national champion by 3 points (sort of like Alabama did this year), lost to a very good Ohio State team by 9 in a game that was by no means a blowout, lost to LSU in a very competitive game that was a lot closer than it looked, lost to USC in a game that was ultimately meaningless for Oregon and lost to Boise State and Stanford in 2009. Of all those losses the only one that still bothers me is Boise State. The other accomplishments – the overtime win against Arizona, the beating of OSU to take the Rose, the domination of Stanford twice, beating USC twice in a row – those are big games too.
Like how my dad felt about his favorite NFL team in the 90s only not quite as awful.
My dad is a Bills fan by the way.

From all the blathering on ESECPN, they're gonna get their way regardless
due to the regular season and SEC blah blah blah body of work blah blah.
Even the comparisons of wins/losses etc weren’t enough to convince people. So it even came down to: “OK ST may deserve to be in NC based on results but Bama is the second best team in the country and the best two teams in the country should play.”
I kid you not. I HATE THE SEC AND ESPN.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
what body of work?
The SEC east is horrible. An overrated Penn St. team is their signature win

It should though
The BCS is a sham. You can argue that Bama is the 2nd best team, but they had a shot. At home. They couldn’t do it.
OkSt lost to Iowa St
In 2ot, a few days after their school suffered a huge tragedy. I’m sure many players and coaching staff personally knew them. That can take a toll.
Preaching to the choir here. SEC disagrees. Ironic considering those were the same statements
they said when they were kept out of the BCS CG…(of course, when it’s YOU, its totally ok, when it’s the other team that benefits, it’s an unholy sin).
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
OkSt must be kicking themselves
2OT loss to Iowa St is gonna stop them from playing for it all

the national championship puts the two best teams together
i think bama and lsu are the two best teams. bama missed like four field goals and they have steamrolled everyone else. their o’s may suck but their defenses are near perfect. pads were popping so hard in that first game
But then we can get into the body of work argument
And honestly Bama really hasn’t played very many good teams.
I’d much rather see OKState get a shot considering they haven’t played Bama yet.

Yes but then you look who they played

the only impressive wins for either are arkansas and oklahoma. arkansas is much better than oklahoma and lsu is way better than iowa state

are impressive wins.

They also got pushed pretty hard by a mediocre at best Vanderbilt team.
by Jonathan Wright on Dec 3, 2011 7:36 PM PST up reply actions
You're wrong
KState has played strongly against quality competition – Oklahoma, OKST, Texas, Baylor.
If KState is, so is Arkansas.
6 of Oklahoma States wins were over teams with winning records.
Alabama only has 3 of those.
by Jonathan Wright on Dec 3, 2011 6:59 PM PST up reply actions
Dude
They beat PSU by 16 and Georgia Southern by 17.
They haven’t steamrolled jack. LSU has. Alabama is an outstanding team, but body of work and differences are pretty close for OKST and Alabama. The difference is simply Alabama’s loss is better than OKST’s and OKST’s wins are significantly better than Alabama’s.
Because an SEC team will finally lose the NCG?
Because you want a major overhaul of the BCS?

Just saying
we’ve largely lost to elite teams, with a good helping of our own mistakes (USC, tOSU). MSU’s playing lights out right now, but if the Notre Dame version of MSU shows up, we should roll.
Then again, we’ve had our share of unfocused games recently as well…
15-yard penalty for my avatar. /Pereira'd
Yes and no
We’re not as good on offense. Without a reliable receiver we aren’t as 2-dimensional.
We are arguably as good if not better on defense.
The biggest thing I worry about is that we’re not as consistent as we were last year. That’s what really bugs me; that for the last three games we’ve played so flat and meh, and yet are able to go out and dominate Stanford. Then again, we can be less consistent against a team like Wisconsin and still win. Wisconsin is not remotely the caliber on offense or defense as Auburn was.
oh god I hope so.
Cause this is scary.

Moving the game to Charlotte was a good move for them.
We want to play the best the B1G has to offer.
If MSU wins again, they will have conclusively proven they are better than Wiscy. If Wiscy wins, given the previous “hail Mary” loss it shows that they are at the very least every bit as good as MSU if not slightly better. Therefore I’ll take either team and will NOT wish to play the one that might “give us the best chance to win.”

It’s the same as when people were hoping Stanford would pick up a loss prior to our meeting to give us a chance to make the P12CG if we lost to the Tree. I guess an argument could be made against L. Scott who started the ball rolling with expansion.
A lot of folks think 16 team conferences would hurt the sport. I’m not one of them. I love what he’s done for the conference thus far.
The Pac was moribund under Hansen.
I think his pushing for the 16-team pack was a case of seeing the inevitable future and trying to get there first rather than a dedicated effort to tear apart the status quo. A lesser commish would be content pick at the carcasses of other conferences like the Little Least and the Big-12. If V-Tech loses, those votes have to go somewhere.
by Jonathan Wright on Dec 3, 2011 7:29 PM PST up reply actions
But Bama is already #2 in their poll.
So, the new rankings will just be this:
1. LSU
2. Bama
3. OK State
4. Stanford
5. Oregon
6. Michigan State
7. Georgia
8. Boise State
(My best guess, mostly just an example).
If you’re hoping that OK ST rising to #3 in the polls is going to be sufficient to overtake Bama in the BCS overall rankings, don’t think so.
OK ST will not have enough advantage in the computers to overcome Bama. The only way OK ST overtakes Bama in the BCS standings is for the voters to vote them above Bama. At least, that was my takeaway from the incessant ESECPN blathering (mostly Brad Edwards) all of this past week.

My point is that a huge statement will sway some of those voters
and put okie state to #2
Ah, yes, that' possible. Depends on how many of them are in ESECPN world.

But how many of those V-Tech votes have V-tech at number 2?
And V-tech losing would only make it easier to rise up.

too bad I am going to be cheering against them.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin is a good team but they are most like Stanford when compared with other teams in PAC 12. If we stop Ball we win the Rose Bowl.
but their TEs aren't anywhere comparable.
Plus, Luck’s the better QB. Ball wasn’t very impressive tonight, but he’s better than Stanford’s RB, and considering how UCLA and USC were able to run on us, I’m a bit worried.
15-yard penalty for my avatar. /Pereira'd
Maybe but....
They may a little bit better than Stanford….but not much. They certainly don’t have any wide out like the two boys from USC who scorched us.
No, they don’t. But Wilson can stretch out plays like Barkley couldn’t.
Wisconsin is susceptible to pressure, so it will be interesting to see what Aliotti dials up.
