Quack Fix: More Rose Bowl previews and a win against Wazzu
An entertaining Alamo Bowl ending with a Baylor win and a surprising romp by the basketball team makes for a pretty good night. Enjoy your Friday fix.
- Rob Moseley writes that the one thing that LaMichael James is missing is a defining moment in a BCS bowl game. In his two BCS appearances, James has just 28 carries for 119 yards Moseley and Adam Jude also have a some notes up that include some quotes from the team on James and his now infamous picture from Space Mountain.
- Jude thinks that Wisconsin will attempt to do what most Oregon opponents try: to keep the ball away from the Duck's offense. I think it all comes down to is whether or not Oregon can get into a consistent rhythm on offense. If they do, they can put some pressure on the Badgers, which can lead to more opportunities on offense.
- The men's basketball team opened up the Pac-12 schedule with a 92-75 victory against Washington State. As a team, the Ducks shot nearly 70% from the field and were led by Olu Ashaolu and his 23 points. Hopefully the Ducks will carry the momentum into the Washington game on Saturday.
- George Schroeder wonders if the extra time for Wisconsin to prepare will mean another loss for the Ducks.
- Ted Miller had several pieces on Oregon and the Rose Bowl yesterday. In case you missed it yesterday morning, Ted writes that it's unlikely the Ducks will be leaving the national scene any time soon. He followed that up with a post on Oregon's new uniforms. He also has the highlights from yesterday's press conference, including some great quotes from Helfrich. Finally, here's a video preview of the Rose Bowl.
- Charles has his second video previewing what we might see against Wisconsin. Good stuff, as always.
- The Washington State women's basketball team also scored 75 against the Ducks last night. Unfortunately, the Lady Ducks only managed only 47 as both Amanda Johnson and Nia Jackson were out with injuries.
Go Ducks!

Kenjon Barner sounds more open to the idea of considering the NFL draft than he did earlier this month. Said his evaluation “looked good.”
The Legend
Doubt it, but
If you read into anything that is being said now, it looks like LMJ is coming back and KB is leaving; I suspect neither to happen.
We would be crazy thin at RB next year if he left
Thin to the point that I think we’d have to go after a JC guy to fill the gap. It’d be DAT, Carson, and the true freshmen. Not good.
Huh...
Well, it looks like it may be DAT’s time to shine. Hopefully Byron Marshall com es ready to play as well.
Winners of the Platypus trophy!
There's just no way DAT can do every-down duty, not with his size/weight and what we need of him
We need him to return as well, catch in play action, and generally be more of a surprise play. I don’t know if Tra is ready to fill in for Barner/LMJ, he doesn’t have that speed. So we’re definitely going to be short if Barner leaves.

Like in 2009 when LGB was suspended opening game
and team had just two freshman with no experience to carry the load?
I think DAT is ready to be a feature back- and Tra is ready to carry a significant load. Would love to be able to use DAT like we are and have a KJB or LMJ as the featured back one more year… but he is going to be a Reggie Bush type tailback that gets 15-20 carries per game in addition to his slash roles at Oregon- and he will be really good at it.
I'm not that concerned either
I wouldn’t be happy to see Barner leave (or LMJ for that matter) and I don’t think that we would immediately replace their performances, but we do have two good backs already behind them. And who doesn’t want to see more of DAT getting the ball?
We were freaked out when Masoli got busted and taken off the team. That team ended up doing pretty well. I have faith in Kelly in both the playcalling on the field and the coaching off of it, as well as the recruiting. It seems like if you make it on the field at all you’re going to be a pretty good player. If you don’t – like Seastrunk – it’s not a huge loss.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
I don't yet think that DAT is a typical feature back.
Look at LMJ, playing close to 200 pounds, he has gotten banged up the last two seasons. I personally don’t think that Carson is anything amazing either.
If KJB leaves as well, next season could be a little scary. Byron Marshall and possibly another recruit such as DJ Foster (hopefully) would definitely see some time.
Winners of the Platypus trophy!
He was like 175 as a redshift freshman
Stayed healthy and was phenomenal. James likes contact and running between the tackles. That has led to more injuries- although the shoulder thing was a fluke and dates back to a highschool injury… DAT got a lot of touches in real games. Special teams and WR are not non-contact positions. Oh and he ran the ball quite a few times too.
I’d love to have depth- it’s awesome. But your not going to sell me on DAT not being a capable 15-20 carry a game tailback at Oregon. Dude is insanely goodand has shown it against elite competition.

DAT is not a feature back

--Dave

He doesn't have to be
Just think about having a more traditional wishbone set with DAT, Tra and DT. DAT is always the outside option. Tra is always the inside option. DAT wouldn’t gget all the carries and wouldn’t get as much contact. And they can go out of it into the IZR or the OZR and have Tra as a lead blocker if needed.
There are a lot of ways for DAT to carry the ball more without him getting 30 carries a game.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
I don't disagree

Feature back ala Jerimiah Johnson
Thunder and lightning baby. 15-20 carries a game- he’ll get 1200+ yards and be 1st team all conference. Not sure if you were paying attention this year but he is really good. He is a rb- not a receiver and he’s made WR work because he is just that much of a freak.
by Duckfreak on Dec 31, 2011 5:20 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah he is
Not the LaMike 35+ carry games. But absolutely 15-20 carries a game. Dude will average 8+ yards per Carey in that role whenever they plug him in.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Oregon used him in this role next year even if Barner comes back.
Barner getting his 15-20 carries as well.
To me DAT and KJB are proven commodities and obviously will excel in those roles. If KJB does leave- then the wildcard becomes Tra taking over 10-15 carries and being effective.
by Duckfreak on Dec 31, 2011 5:27 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
While not a disaster, losing Barner would put the Ducks in a huge bind as we don't have a ton of depth due to Lache and WIlliams leaving
As Dave said, DAT is not an everyone down back and the grind would take it’s toll. Carson isn’t a feature back either and doesn’t have the burst to be a #1 in this offense (remember that Blount split time in 2008 with JJ). Finally who knows what we will get out of Byron Marshall as a true freshman
I am not ready to discredit Carson...
he looked good in his role against AZ when he played with the first team. Much of his role this year has been spot duty in blow outs going against 1st team defenses with Mana Grieg as our best lineman blocking for him.
Campbell said that both DAT and Carson picked up the offense better than any true frosh to come through the program. Carson will be a good one. Give him an off season of training.
"I love Oregon's obsolete recruiting report on an unhealthy level. Just more proof how balla Chip Kelly really is." Dr. Saturday
DAT is really good, but would get smothered as an every-down back. I also don't see Tra Carson being ready to "carry a significant load" at all yet.
Things like that.
How did we only put up 34 on Washington?

It was, but it wasn't...
Pleasant intercepted Price on their first drive, then we marched right down the field for a LMJ TD. But then DT had that wierd backward-pass-slipped-out-of-hand-fumble thing, and the D held them to a FG. We got a FG of our own shortly after that for a 10-3 lead. We went back-and-forth with no scoring for quite a while before Pleasant got another INT and we scored another TD to go up 17-3 in the 2nd quarter. But they scored a TD with 30 seconds left in the half to cut it to 17-10, which felt a lot closer than it should have probably been.
And, as far as total points scored, we spent the whole 4th quarter milking the clock. So much so that the announcers were raving about how genius it was that Chip was running the clock out without huddling. But the last 2 drives just about say it all…12 straight run plays and uw only had the ball for about 2.5 minutes of the final 11:45:

We punted.
We didn’t punt until our 4th possession of the game. First possession was a touchdown. Second was DT’s weird fumble. Third was a FG to get up 10-3. Then we finally punted with 1:27 left in the 1st quarter. The plays above is the end of the 4th quarter.
That’s why I said it was slow, but it wasn’t. We scored on our first 2 possessions, but still didn’t rack up a lot of points in the first half. It was a different kind of “slow start” that we saw in the other games, where we came out with multiple 3-and-outs and dug ourselves in a hole before finally waking up and mounting a comeback. We were never losing in the fusky game.

What exactly are you looking for?
By all accounts, he committed to us last evening. Here is an article from a Cleveland newspaper about it (and interestingly enough, it features a quote from Brown that says he was promised to play tight end at UO).
Winners of the Platypus trophy!
It’s interesting how some players are adamant on playing one side of the ball. I think it was Chris Courtney that said Brown was Julius Peppers lite on his defensive film which is obviously high praise but still most schools were recruiting him as a DE(he was offensive MVP last night though) & a lot of people say that Arik Armstead will be a dominating OT but he’s adamant on playing DE(& basketball). Last year most teams were recruiting Marqise Lee as a DB & we would of got him since we were recruiting him as a WR if USC didn’t switch the offer from DB to WR, so it looks like he made the right choice in saying he should be a WR.
The Legend
I also thought his choice of words was weird.
I know the coaching staff will give him the opportunity to try out for any position, but many of our most successful players were bottled behind more experienced/more talented players before switching to what they shine as now (no reference to our RB helmets meant).

You’re either a genius or a moron. We can get back to that in about 3 hrs.

That's one reason to hate Oklahoma
Two others are Bob Stoops and teh sooner schooner.
If ya can't get your Dick Enright, get your Dick Harter!
The only reason I don't like them
is because the fans were such gargantuan whiny babies in 2006.

Iowa is moving the ball nicely
they just should have taken the FG on the 4th down at the goal line.

This game fails to entertain me
I prefer last night’s crazy, record breaking, no-defense derpfest.
Herbie is explaining that now...
Seriously.
Iowa’s offense is playing boring even by Iowa offense standards. It’s that bad.
Oklahoma’s offense sucks too. It’s amazing how big of a loss Ryan Broyles was.
Winners of the Platypus trophy!
At least the offenses were good in that game.
Tonight no unit on either team is looking sharp

SEASON STUDENT TICKET!
Not to mention, we played in a bowl game last season? That is interesting, because I seem to be under the distinct impression that we didn’t play in a bowl last season, and were just sort of handed the National Championship trophy.

I’ve never seen anything like it. Play has been suspended because of it, lol!

I've been waiting for years to see this happen
Though I was hoping it’d disrupt a play in progress. One of the more reckless ideas ESPN’s ever had.
