Why is it okay for some teams to play cupcakes all year

And not for another? BSU gets total crap for their schedule but the ACC and Big East skate right into the BCS.

Their whole conference is full of cupcakes.

The ACC and Big East at least has more competitive teams. I’m guessing though.

ACC is pretty competitive, actually

While it doesn’t have a lot of great teams it has quite a few good teams and has a lot of parity. This was the argument for the Pac-10 after all.

The Big East is horrible, mind you. The ACC isn’t so bad.

And to top it off, they barely beat a overranked Georgia tech and got killed by Clemson

At least our conference schedule will be tougher than theirs was this season.

Stanford will be ranked, Washington could possibly be a #20-25 caliber of team, and the winner of the south (USC) will be a fantastic team.

Not like it even matters, so long as you are in an AQ conference, an undefeated season will more often than not get you into the NCG.

Winners of the Platypus trophy!

by CaDuck on Dec 4, 2011 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, our non con schedule sucks but it won't hurt us unless there are

3 undefeated teams at the end of the season. Otherwise we should easily make it to a 4th BCS game at 10-2 or better

by Xenocide23 on Dec 4, 2011 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

I agree completely.

But if the Pac ends up being average and this situation plays out we,will hear fans, much like yourself, complaining about the same thing you are. I’m not saying your view point is wrong. Just remember this could happen to anyone and may very well happen to us.

"Last time I checked, there is no ‘Hall of Average.’ " Chip Kelly

by PondJunky on Dec 4, 2011 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

It kinda happened last year too

Our Nonconf schedule looked pretty crappy, all told. New Mexico (the worst team in FBS last year) Portland State and Tennessee which had a crappy season.

Stuff like that happens. I would love it if teams scheduled like Oregon and LSU (and really specifically, LSU) did this year, going out of their way for hard conference games – but things happen, people back out, etc. And honestly, nowadays why wouldn’t you; the risk/reward for playing tough competition is way too high on the risk side.

by kalon on Dec 4, 2011 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yep. Even if there are three teams,

The NCG would be the undefeated SEC team, vs us (most likely). We will start out the season very high in the polls (so that should influence the human aspect of the BCS formula) so we will probably be able to steer clearly above a third undefeated team (who would most likely be a non-AQ school anyways).

Winners of the Platypus trophy!

At the top yes.

With all the incoming coaches and attrition I don’t see the Pac-12 getting much national recognition.

Especially if we continue our trend of strong OOC performances.
If we slip up we could find ourselves in a very similar situation. Granted we have more reputation to fall back on.

Predictions?
Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio: Both have Oregon and Wisconsin because that’s the game.
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Both have Oklahoma State and Stanford
Valero Alamo: Both have Washington playing Oklahoma.
Bridgepoint Education Holiday: Both have California playing Texas.
Hyundai Sun: Both have Utah playing Georgia Tech.
MAACO Las Vegas: Schlabach has Arizona State playing Boise State. Edwards has the Sun Devils playing TCU.
Kraft Fight Hunger: Schlabach has UCLA playing Illinois. Edwards has the Bruins playing Iowa State

Oklahoma State/Stanford would be a great game. Neither team should be able to contain the others offense. 41-38 Ok St?

Washington would get absolutely murdered by Oklahoma if they were to play. 44-17 OU

California/Texas would be the least typical Holiday Bowl ever. Neither team can score. 2-0 Texas.

Utah would get beat by Georgia Tech 30-13.

ASU would beat TCU, and it would be a toss-up against Boise State. 35-21 ASU

UCLA/Illinois. Yikes, neither team could be playing any worse right now. 31-21 Illinois.

to be fair to the SEC

I think LSU is clearly the #1 team in the nation and has proven it. They have beaten the best teams in their conference, the Pac-12 champ and the Big East champ – and the latter two were not even at home.

they have nothing to apologize for. LSU is exactly what a champion should look like regardless of what conference they are in.

Alabama, on the other hand, can eat a bucket of dicks.

The "Beano Cook" of ATQ

Because the SEC is both?

Because it’s not LSU’s fault that Alabama played them tough and better than any other team this year.

Because it’s not the SEC’s fault that any other contenders out there shot themselves in the foot in various spectacular ways.

Because every conference has horrible bottom feeders, but the SEC West has three teams with 10 or more wins.

Because saying that the SEC is bottom heavy and thus is unworthy ignores things like Colorado/Arizona/Oregon State.

I think Utah is going to whomp on Georgia Tech

• Utah has a very good front seven that stuffs the run
• They get a month to prepare for a funky offense
• Utah has won, like 8 out of their last 9 bowl games
• John White should be healthy, and GT is 80th in the nation in YPC against

I could definitely see Utah holding GT to under 10 points.

Playoff conversations have been going on forever now.

Conversing about a playoff system wont accomplish all that much. The BCSNCG is already contractually locked into being aired on ESPN through 2014, so I guess that we would unfortunately have to wait that long for anything to change.

I don’t intend to defend the BCS, but even in a playoff system some teams will inevitably get shafted. There isnt a completely foolproof way to organize a championship among 120 teams playing wildly different opponents.

I disagree that legitimate contenders would get screwed in a playoff.

Most years there’s a team at 3, 4, maybe even 5 that can argue that they should be in the NC discussion. An eight game playoff would only take three weeks, and I’ve never seen a team ranked #9 that should have a chance at the title.

You're right regarding the quality of teams at the top,

But since at-large bids into the playoff will inevitably be at stake, there will frequently be a #9 or #10 team that has a solid argument to get an at-large bid over the #8 team.

That is an interesting idea, to say the least.

From a completely selfish and fan-based point of view, it sounds pretty fun. As PondJunky says below, it will clear up a lot of the NCG controversy, but we’re still stuck with the BCS deciding who gets to play in the NCG feeder bowls.

Some say it would degrade the importance of the BCS games.

Which i think is BS. If anything it will put more on the line. It would also extend the bowl season, which could be hard to deal with academically. Then again they could make the BCS bowls all on one weekend, say Christmas weekend, and make the Championship game two weeks after the bowls.

Wetzel had a good column about this yesterday.

Apparently Mike Slive of the sec proposed exactly this back in 2007 to the rest of the BCS and was laughed out of the room. The irony being that because they didn’t adopt the format, they ceded control of cfb to the Sec. The BCS NCG is now, by default, set up with one team being the winner of the sec, and the rest of the d1 teams battling the #2 sec team for the second spot. It’s nuts.

Actually, I feel like this would only lead to more patsy OOC scheduling. Since conference games are the only ones that matter, why risk a loss or injuries in OOC? Just roll through a patsy schedule and then gear up for conference play.

There are too damned many teams and too damned many conferences. At-larges are a problem, and it’s hard to completely cut out polls / the BCS.

The "Beano Cook" of ATQ

by benzduck on Dec 4, 2011 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

It's about money

it’s not about power. It’s about money. It just so happens that the people whose money it’s about (the NCAA) make a hell of a lot more money with a bowl system than they do a playoff.

With a bowl system you get the bowl money, which is huge. You force teams to pay for ticket allotments; remember, both Oregon and Auburn LOST money going to the NCG even after the BCS payout, but the bowl group and the NCAA made tons.

The bowl system is bad for the schools as far as money goes. It’s bad for the conferences most of the time. It’s only good for the NCAA and to a very lesser extent the media contracts.

by kalon on Dec 4, 2011 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

uh...

So what is time again?

There isnt a playoff because the people who could make it happen won’t because they’ll lose money. They (the NCAA) would be in power all the same. They wouldn’t lose any power, just money.

Why would they switch, again? And what does that have to do with power?

by kalon on Dec 5, 2011 8:34 AM PST up reply actions

Well, they all have better records than Ole Miss playing more difficult schedules.

Ole Miss beat Southern Illinois and Fresno State.
Kentucky’s best win was against Tennessee (5-7), and it’s second best win was Ole Miss.

OSU beat Washington and Washington State.
Washington State beat Arizona State and Colorado (and had games against Ucla and ASU go to the wire).
Colorado beat Utah and Arizona.
Arizona beat ASU and Ucla.

Now, who’s worse than Ole Miss? None. Who has a worse resume than Kentucky? Every team in the Pac-12 has better wins. The only reason Kentucky has five wins is their absolute garbage OOC (unlike Arizona, Colorado, OSU).

We who bleed green are happy with the RB. However this great sport of CFB just got screwed! The SEC is so corrupt that they get auto entry into the BCS Title game every year. But this year, they up that. They get BOTH slots. Okie lite got screwed tonight! Did you all know 3 of the BCS ESPN show talking heads are Bama Alums? And Herby is a close personal friend of Nick Saban. It was rigged from the start. All the other Conference Commissioners should kill off the BCS and finally put a playoff in place. 8 team playoff. Take each AQ Conference Champ, plus 2 slots for non AQ’s, and mini 8 team playoff. Keep all bowls as they are. Problem solved. I am BOYCOTTING THE BCS TITLE GAME THOUGH…It should never have been SEC vs SEC and we all know it!

2006. Ohio State plays Michigan in the final game of the regular season (the original game of the century) and beats them by a field goal. (They actually put TD’s on the board though.) That left undefeated Ohio State looking between either a game that was a rematch with 11-1 Michigan or a game with 11-1 Florida.

Sound familiar?

P.S. The SEC bitched and moaned about the BCS back then, doing everything in their power to get Florida into the game. And when Florida was given the chance, they rolled Ohio State 41-14. Who says Oklahoma State wouldn’t do the same?

Wisconsin was exposed on the edges and hasn’t show it can match up well against Oregon at all

by Xenocide23 on Dec 4, 2011 6:08 PM PST up reply actions

Well hold on a sec

I really don’t think Michigan State is as bad as everybody else does here. They have some speed on the edge and some great WRs. And Wisconsin’s D is better than Stanford’s overall, the stats bear that out.

We have the better rushing offense, they have the better passing offense. The only area where we have a huge advantage is special teams, they are very average in kick coverage and returns.

Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?

by baseb3383 on Dec 4, 2011 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

I just don't see Wisconsin's gameplan working against the ducks

Our defense is used to stacking the box and playing man on man coverage while their defense is going to have trouble with our offense. And Wisconsin looked like crap on kickoff coverage. DAT is going to be a huge weapon for us.

by Xenocide23 on Dec 4, 2011 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

I could see them crushing us with play action

We really need to get pressure in the backfield, that will be critical. Wisconsin is much like Stanford in that they are an “on schedule” offense, we need to get some sacks and TFLs in the early downs to kill drives. I’m not overly worried about their WRs in 1-on-1 coverage, which will be good for us.

My main concern is that their defense is better than people think. Yards per play they are quite good. They don’t get many sacks or TFLs, but they are solid and don’t give up big plays either. I think you might be right however, the lack of big TFLs on defense may be a result of a D-line that isn’t explosive. If they don’t get us in the backfield, we will do very well.

The other thing is, I still don’t know how good Wisconsin actually is. They played a cupcake schedule. They looked good doing it outside of their tougher opponents, but I like the fact that we’ve been battle tested by several good teams (LSU, Stanford, USC), all of which are better than any team Wisconsin has faced.

Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?

by baseb3383 on Dec 4, 2011 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

It really, really doesn’t. Wisconsin has played a worse schedule that BSU. We can’t look at any of their typical stats seriously. They have played a simply pathetic schedule.

According to S&P+, Wisconsin has the 49th ranked defense in the country. Stanford is 22nd. Oregon’s is 10th, btw.
According to FEI, Wisconsin is 24th, Stanford is 10th, and Oregon is 8th.

5. In (automatic; BCS conference champ)

16-22. Out (excluded; need to be in top 14 to be considered for at-large selection unless crazy stuff happens)
23. In (automatic; BCS conference champ)

Obviously, #7/#8 are the glaring ones. I feel bad for the K-State fans, and I feel really bad for Boise fans (though to be fair, I am one, so….)

At least, at the end of the day, I understand why Boise got left out. It’s a ticket-selling thing, and that sucks, but that’s what it is. It’s shocking to me that VaTech and Michigan both got selected over K-State. I just don’t get that.

Thoughts

How are Texas and Auburn ranked? They suck.
How is Va Tech ahead of Clemson? They got blown out twice.
After going through these standings
ND should at least be ranked. Losses to Mich, USC, and Stanford.

After going through this, I think computers put WAY too much importance on Conference rankings. It’s completely not fair to many teams. If you’re a mediocre team in a great conference, IE Texas/Auburn, you’ll get way over ranked in the computers, even though themselves have done nothing noteworthy, while a good team in a mediocre conference will get shafted, ie FSU, Virginia, ND, etc.

It's not that surprising of a reason

Auburn lost to the #1, #2 and #6 teams in the country. The other two losses were to Clemson (which is a good team) and Georgia. The computers don’t care about MoV, so Auburn’s close win over utah State doesn’t matter. All of those losses to really good teams don’t hurt them too much on the grand scheme of things. Beating Florida and especially South Carolina helps too.

Basically the computers don’t punish you for losses too badly if the loss was to a very good opponent. Which realistically should be correct. It just so happens that Auburn’s losses to good opponents looked horrible and their wins against meh competition also looked bad.

the war is over

Boise State is off my hate list.

The Boise State hate thing was always about respect. That fanbase hadn’t paid their dues. They were met with instant success and talked like they were a perennial power.

Now, two years in a row they lose their big conference game in the most heartbreaking fashion possible, and are shipped off to Las Vegas as a consolation prize. This year, they got left out of the Sugar Bowl in favor of a team that got blown out by Clemson twice, and doesn’t have a win on the schedule that can come close to matching Boise’s win over Georgia.

You’ve paid your dues. I will now join my regularly schedule indifference, already in progress.

Axemen's Allegory: Why I didn't join you guys in the thread until just a few mins ago

You know what’s awesome? When someone tries to smoke in their bathroom, and winds up causing 3 rooms to go underwater, 150K in water damage, a malfunctioning fire system, and takes a building’s entire afternoon to scramble to save people’s stuff

AKA my afternoon.

the fire department just now got the fire alarm to shut up
we cleared one girl’s room in about 2 mins, and then we were bailing water out the windows that was knee high for about an hour while more streamed down from 208 (smoker’s room)

essentially, not only did this dumbass try to smoke in his bathroom, he also had at some point knocked his fire sprinkler loose, so when it tried to “sprinkle” the water pressure caused it to come out of the ceiling, so the water just high-pressure gushed down. Now 3 people are out a room until further notice, he’s been evicted and will probably face some hefty fines/penalties, our electrical is shot, and the kitchen is OOO. College is AWESOME.

to stay in the Georgia Tech game. They have a long time for prep as well. Depth may not be an issue as the game is shorted by the triple option offense.

I'mma try to quantify these somewhat.

Here’s my feeling of the certainty of a PAC-12 win, from 1 to 10 (where a 1 represents a near-certain loss and a 10 represents a near-certain win).

Wisconsin vs. Oregon: 5? I don’t know. I don’t think I can honestly evaluate our chances in this one, at least not yet. Vegas seems to think it’s maybe around a 6.

Oklahoma State vs. Stanford: I’ll go with a 4 here. I’m a ’Pokes lean because they remind me a lot of the one team that blitzed Stanford, but better in several aspects. That said, Stanford is still quite good.

Baylor vs. washington: 2, and I’m being generous.

Texas vs. California: 7. I think I like Cal’s chances here. Texas has absolutely no offense at all, and Cal should be able to keep them well under 20 points (while scoring 20 of their own).

Boise State vs. Arizona State: 3. I know that Vontaze could make things hard for Kellan, but they’ve just been so sloppy this year that it’s real hard to pick a headless ASU team over the Broncos.

GaTech vs. Utah: Uh, 5? This game’s a total enigma to me.

by INducktrination on Dec 5, 2011 8:09 AM PST up reply actions

I'll say

Ore vs. Wis = Win
Ok St vs Stanford = Win
Baylor vs Wash = Loss
Cal vs Tex = Win
BSU vs ASU = Loss
UCLA vs Ill = Win
Utah vs G Tech = Win

by KitIsh on Dec 4, 2011 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

I see losses on everything but us

OKST is a rematch of us vs. Stanford; good luck with that
Baylor/WA – HAHAHAHHAHHA sorry
Cal/Texas – Cal is not great especially away from home.
BSU/ASU – big loss
UCLA/Illinois – I can see this as a win, but I feel like its existence makes us all losers
Utah/GTech – loss

by kalon on Dec 4, 2011 11:52 PM PST up reply actions

Rebuttal

OK St is a lot different than we are and a lot more susceptible to being run on all day. They have a bad run D. I see Stanford as being able to smash it down their throats all game and stop them just enough on D to win. Stanford will also be a lot healthier than when they played us.

Texas is not a particularly good team this year. Cal should be able to shut them down on D and score just enough. I also see Cal as being a lot more motivated to win this game than Texas.

GTech relies on their run game and Utah has one of the best run D’s in the nation. With the extra time for a bowl game I see Utah as being able to get used to the Tech offense and shut it down. Can Utah score some points (or Cal for that matter)? I’m thinking they’ll find a way.

by KitIsh on Dec 5, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

My thoughts on the bowls

Burifct is going to try and eat Kellen Moore, it will amuse you.

The only problem I have with Baylor vs. UW is the chance UW wakes up after the game and fires Nick Holt.

Frankly if we don’t fumble the ball to Wisconsin 2-3times or play like last week it should be in the bag. The Defense Wisconsin showed against MSU was..a nice to watch :P

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Stanford | I will enjoy seeing Luck get sacked :)

I'm really intrigued by the BSU v ASU game

Moore has never really thrived under pressure and you know that with a couple of extra weeks to get healthy, ASU can bring pressure. I don’t trust ASU to pull a victory out no matter what’s at stake, but I’m interested in seeing how Moore handles a semi-competent defense.

Best Case for Pac 12

Oregon and Stanford win. UCLA too?

UW, ASU, Cal seem hopeless. Utah- depends on which team shows up.

End of the day “total” record won’t mean a whole lot if Oregon and Stanford both win and 3 of the top 5 teams in the final poll are from the Pac 12.

I think Cal...

played very well towards the end of the year. It’s bowl season but, yeah, I am not feeling good about our win – loss records.

I definitely wouldn't call Cal hopeless.

Seems like they have a great shot, particularly if their defense comes to play.

Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.

UDUB question for the educated duck fans...

I see alot of you on here and other sites saying UW has no chance against Baylor. Do you alot of you not realize that there is actually a worse D-coordinator out there other than Holt? Believe me, I was shocked to learn this as well. Baylor’s defense is ranked 114th overall and it took overtime for them to beat Kansas by a whopping ONE point. Now, with this new found information, do you still have the same thoughts? I am asking for real sports talk too, nothing bias just because I’m a Husky, as I can actually do the same towards the ducks team. For example, I think you guys will run Wisconsin out of the stadium. My reason, your defense has really stepped it up and the offense seems to be clicking and we all know when the ducks offense clicks, the scoreboard ticks.

There will never be a Husky free Northwest...never.

Yeah, that's my real worry

It’s not the defense one way or another, or that Baylor will score points. it’s that I’m not sure I have faith that the Huskies can consistently score points on a team. I’m not sure that Price et al can do that compared to Baylor. And I think that Sark has a habit of getting a bit cute instead of going for the throat, especially early.

Ya I can

agree with that. I know alot of Dawg fans drool over Sark (Maybe even literally) but if there’s one problem I have with him, he can get too conservative. The thing I enjoy most about Chip Kelly is even when the odds are against him, that motherfucker will go for it. 4th and 8? Ahhh fuck it lets go for it anyways. Okay maybe not every coach should do that all the time, but that it was makes me nervous for this bowl game. Will Sark be able to maintain a lead…or even get one for that matter? His plays can be vanilla right from the gate, see: vs OSU.

There will never be a Husky free Northwest...never.
