Who got the new XBox update?

I really like it and can’t wait till they add more video watching options.

Hehe me and my wife played with the voice control options for the kinect yesterday

It is very good compared to before but can still be a little frustrating :)
I haven’t had a chance to look at all the new features in there but it looks nice at least.

Only thing I am missing on the XBOX still is a web browser and option to download more apps such as youtube etc.

Youtube is coming as is HBOgo

I tried Hulu Plus, but am less than impressed with their library. Wish they had Amazon Prime. I agree that a web browser would make sense, especially for Microsoft.

Hmm, I have both Amazon Prime and Netflix

and I never use the video feature of Prime bc they aren’t on my xbox. Is this in the works? Prime is a good supplement to Netflix, would be nice to have it more convenient to the plasma

Not that I've heard. Just on my wish list.

Would love to get rid of cable TV and would do so if they had Prime on XBox, plus I have to wait and see what the Pac 12 network looks like.

All Cable is good for is sports, live news events/coverage (like election night), and other "special events"

Having been without Cable for the first time in my life the past 4 months, I really don’t miss it/notice its gone. Besides, soon we’ll have access to online DVRs through cable, the ability to watch our cable online, and cable itself will be internet based.

I guess if you had your Xbox connected to your computer you could just use their instant video service. Although that doesn’t help if you like to rent versus own.

You are wise, I was unaware of this feature

will have to check it out. I do hate Media Player generally, but this might be some microsoft cross-product syncing that is actually a good thing

by OregonNYC on Dec 8, 2011 9:04 AM PST up reply actions

I have my XBox connected to my Windows Media Player

(it’s really easy to do). I love how quick and easy it is for my XBox to read what is on my computer and scroll through and watch my movies. Problem is I also like to watch a lot of stuff on demand online, like Amazon Prime’s free TV shows, etc.

I highly recommend linking your Xbox to your Windows Media, plus you can set up WMP to automatically sync whatever is in a certain folder on your computer. That way when you download them they automatically show up as available on your Xbox to watch.

I've been using my Xbox just for gaming for years

(I’m sure my postings have dropped over the last 28 days due to Skyrim release) and only recently tapped into the multimedia aspect of it. Actually a pretty well designed system for what it has, like others said I find it confusing that there is no browser or youtube etc.

by OregonNYC on Dec 8, 2011 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

I very rarely do any gaming

I’ve used my Xbox primarily for multimedia. It’s sync with WMP is really seamless and allows me to keep all my media on one system on my house and then play it in any room wirelessly through the XBox.

My kids love the Kinect for game so the voice controls and motion control upgrade is really cool too.

I hooked up my computer Dell i7 with 12GB DDR & 1GB video card up to my 46" LED TV and it looked like crap in both 1920 x 1080 and HDMI

As I understand it, the TV is just making the pixels bigger. Do I really need a 3GB of RAM or super clocked card to make it look nice and sharp?

by DuckUntilDeath on Dec 8, 2011 10:17 AM PST up reply actions

DUD, there are a lot of issues that can arise when connecting your computer to an HDTV.

You might need to play around with the different available resolutions, or see if the TV supports 1-to-1 pixel mapping. I helped my brother hook his computer up to his TV (only 720p), and the actual resolution he needed his computer set to was actually slightly different than what the standard 720p resolution was.

I don't mean to impose...

by TheOcean on Dec 8, 2011 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

Also, you mentioned HDMI and a resolution back to back. Are you using HDMI cables for the connection? And are you using any converters, because I know some of the older connection formats (DVI or VGA…not sure which off the top of my head) are not actually able to throughput the full 1080p HD signal.

I don't mean to impose...

by TheOcean on Dec 8, 2011 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

Interesting.

Mine is Samsung 1080p with 240Hz refresh. I picked it up at Costco ($350 off the $1100 regular price) a few days before Thanksgiving. I don’t have any Blurays yet, but it looks amazing. The martial arts in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon are no longer blurry!

I will check the TV settings. I bought some 9ft HDMI cables and tried both the HDMI and VGA connectors. The HDMI was better, but not enough to ditch my old Viewsonic 21" tube monitor. I should look for a setting called, “pixel mapping?”

by DuckUntilDeath on Dec 8, 2011 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

If you have the resolutions set correct, you really shouldn’t have any problems, especially compared to your old Viewsonic (which I"m guessing isn’t even 1080p).

I have a 40" Samsung hooked up to my computer, and it looks just as good as a computer monitor when viewed from a normal distance.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Dec 8, 2011 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

I believe the “pixel mapping” thing is a feature of TVs that might be outdated at this point (ie. they all do it).

As I am not an expert with this stuff, my post was more of a “keep fiddling with it, I bet you can get it right” message. Because having your computer hooked up the TV can be so nice when it works correctly.

I don't mean to impose...

by TheOcean on Dec 8, 2011 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

I’ve been using my Computer with an HDTV (720p max) for well over 5 years now.

A lot of it depends on both the TV manufacture, your choice of input and your video card’s drivers.

You do operate on a limited scale of resolutions, essentially a 1280×720, or 1380×720 resolution.

I had an refurbished LG for a while. With the XP drivers, it adjusted well to anything below 1380×720. As soon as I upgraded to Vista (I know….), I had problems with any resolution EXCEPT for 1280×720. Other resolutions, it would get very skewed or cropped.

My TV ended up dying later on (not related), so I replaced it with a Samsung earlier this year, and I haven’t had any problems.

My real problems that I have with the set up is more of a posture and ergonomic related things. Spending any real time gets very awkward and uncomfortable when trying to balance a keyboard and mouse while not at a proper desk.

My new TV is still just a 720p max, so I’m at 1380×720. No problems anymore. No scaling issues. But it’s only a 36".

Hulu Plus

Is a good stopgap for me because I don’t have cable. So I get high quality HD streams (the quality is actually better than Netflix’s supposed HD stuff…although they may have fixed that, I don’t know because I dumped Netflix when they did their big switch) of Daily Show and Parks and Rec and Community…about all I watch anyway. True, the choices aren’t great, but they do have some decent movies on there whenever I’m bored. But yeah, without cable, I’m just streaming everything from my computer anyway, so Hulu works great for Network shows.

I'm sure this is in the works

I got the kinect when it was first released as a way to get the wife involved in games. It was ok for a while, we don’t use it much anymore other than voice commands. Adding kinect features to regular controller based games is happening more, and I can totally see the value of adding that extra dimension. Something else they should add is optional spoken replies in games like Skyrim and Mass Effect, voice command to NPCs in Battlefield or Tom Clancy style games etc

It’s so much easier to sort through videos in Hulu and other apps similar. I don’t have cable, so I won’’t be able to enjoy any of the On Demand options that are coming available in a coupe of week. Also, I have Centurylink (booooo), so I don’t get ESPN 360, either…but I do like the new interface for ESPN 360 and Netflix.

The ESPN app on my XBOX is phenomenal. I get HD quality live games and their replays, anytime I want. Granted the content isn’t always up to par. Now that I think about it, I could see ESPN putting up red tape to keep the Pac-12 from taking some of their viewers on the XBOX.

If I understand it correctly, ESPN and Fox can do whatever they want with their first tier games, although the Pac-12 purposefully kept all rights (broadcast, digital, etc.) to the remaining games, so ESPN won’t have a say in them.

That was the major “Holy Sh*t” part of the deal, that Scott somehow secured the contract size, while not giving away a lot of valuable rights.

I used to think the same thing

But when I bought an XBox with Kinect for my kids I started playing around with it found out how easy it was to transfer media and then the ESPN app just 100% sold me.

Eventually I sold my PS3 and bought another XBox for my office (even better now that the XBox has cloud storage for game data too). If the Pac 12 Network ends up on XBox, I could easily see myself getting rid of cable altogether and just buying XBox’s for every room.

As a Mariner's fan...

I say congrats…you’ll be up there with the Rangers for a couple of years as the premier team of the AL West; however, this really cripples your team for the future. It’s obviously not as bad as the Tori Hunter deal, but it’s deals like this that ruin baseball teams in the long run. I think you’ll lose a lot of your in-house talent that is just going to walk because all of the team’s money is tied up.

10 years…yeesh…he’ll be 41 (!) when his deal is up.

The Torii Hunter deal? Maybe you mean Vernon Wells. Torii Hunter has actually been worth every cent of his deal (barring a collapse this season, of course, but no one projects that). Vernon Wells was an awful deal, although that was a trade rather than a free agent signing.

Anyway, this has the potential to be awful in five or six years. I completely realize that. In fact, it’s probable that it’s a bad deal in five or six years.

But it’s ALBERT FUCKING PUJOLS. Right now it’s tough to think rationally about it.

Defending maligned chants since 2009

by Gorbachav5 on Dec 8, 2011 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

It is Pujols, and I agree it’s hard to think rationally about it. I just have to try to find some negative in this because you’ve now rendered my team worthless (yet again) for the next three or four years (although the ineptitude of Bill Bavasi did enough to ruin the M’s for another couple of years). Hehe.

Actually, this deal probably forces the M’s not to go after Prince Fielder since it won’t make much of a difference now. So, that’s good. That’s one contract I DO NOT want the M’s to offer.

I think I meant the Torii Hunter deal. He got paid A TON of money of if I recall. He’s been good, but nothing close to what the Angels paid him. I forgot about the awful deal Vernon Wells got.

The Angels are paying him $18 million a year. According to baseball reference, and given the relative value of WAR on the open market, he’s been roughly worth his deal every year except last year. And the extra one or two million per season they’ll wind up paying is a kind of bonus for being the face of the franchise and the most marketable guy on the team since Vlad left. I admit the deal looked like an overpayment at the time, but Torii’s been very good.

I’ll never understand baseball contracts. he could virtually walk away from the game now or sit on the bench and get fat and get paid the same. He’s set for life and he doesn’t have to do another damn thing. Guaranteed contracts are the worst thing in sports imo. Throw an injury clause or whatever in there so they don’t lose everything but damn baseball is stupid and this is just another example of how.

But you are all the smartest, funniest, most handsome bitches on all the internets.~DaisyDuck 11.2.11

If he retired, I don’t believe he’d get the money. A lot of times when a guy retires, he’ll work out a deal with the team where they basically pay him some of it to go away. But if he just flat retired, he relinquishes his right to the salary.

I think non-guaranteed contracts are awful, but I understand why football has them, given its nature. I think guaranteed contracts make sense for the other sports. You could argue that hockey could probably use some form of non-guaranteed contracts with their increasing concussion issues.

Defending maligned chants since 2009

by Gorbachav5 on Dec 8, 2011 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

See, it seems like the sports where injuries can end a career are the ones that SHOULD have guarantied contracts.

Sports like baseball and basketball are so stat oriented, they should really have guarantied base salaries (something fairly low), followed by some larger incentive thresholds (get $XXX for batting above .300, $XXX for advancing so far in the post season…etc)

From Kash’s apology:

Its more than what the media portrays and I’m not able to speak on it as of now but tune in for the Rose Bowl on January 2, 2012 @ 3p.m. and watch my Ducks get down against Wisconsin Badgers

He can’t speak about it now? Should I read into this that there’s a legal issue, or is there perhaps an NCAA issue at work here? Because when an athlete or coach can’t talk about something, the very first place my mind goes is “NCAA infraction”.

Calm down.

If he’s contesting the marijuana charge, it could be as simple as not wanting to publicly share his defense strategy. It could also be a legal problem that hasn’t hit the media yet. If he was known to have violated an NCAA rule, I think we would have heard the word “ineligible” thrown around by now. As far as we know, he’s still eligible to transfer and play.

As a general rule, you don't want to publicly try your case in the court of public opinion

while your fate is still in the hands of a DA. Particularly with something minor, you’re looking to get it tossed or reduced as far as possible, and you’re looking to play along to make that happen. Going to the press and giving a bunch of details in a way that makes you look good is going to 1. potentially piss off the people that decide how bad things get for you and 2. establish statements of fact by you that can come back to bite you later because anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

At the same time, it’s also understandable that people want to get the message out that they’re not as bad as people think and ask people to not judge them as fully guilty without trial or further info, whether that’s because the facts are truly more complicated, or the person is just concerned with their own reputation and image. That’s a tough line to walk.

Some media seemed to get a bit bent out of shape yesterday by the way Cliff phrased this, like they interpreted it as him blaming them of saying they were doing a poor job. I get that they want to shore up their turf so people don’t get the wrong idea. But this just seems like standard practice for ongoing legal issues, and media should know that as well as anyone.

Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.

Recruiting question on a semi-light Quack day:

What impact do you think the addition of two “flashy” coaches to our conference and Meyer’s return to coaching at tOSU have on keeping our current verbal commits and landing other big recruits who have expressed interest in the Ducks? Will any poaching occurr immediately or do you think they will need a year or two under their belts to be in contention for prime Pac12 recruits?

Other than running Meyer running the spread, that's why I included tOSU.

I think I remember one of the kids in the kids in the video saying everyone thought they’d end up at the same school.

Also, isn't it great Urban was on the broadcast crew for our Spring Game, interviewed Kelly

and performed extensive on-screen play breakdowns and will now be the head coach at a tradional

powerhouse program in a conference that has a historical bowl match up with our own? Yeah, about that…..

UNCLEAN

by kalon on Dec 8, 2011 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

I think that's one of the worst thoughts out there

That Chip Kelly and Oregon have ‘secrets’. That there is some magical way to beat the Ducks based on scheme or plan.

There really isn’t. There are certain schemes that do better than others (aggressive man with safety help for the run and manning up on the RBs explicitly did well) but there are ways to beat those too. Ultimately beating a Kelly offense – like most spreads – comes down to winning your individual assignments, playing disciplined football where you do not overcommit, and being well-conditioned.

Which really is basically what all good defense do.

Now, there are a couple places that it can be worse; if you have a strong middle of the line it causes issues with the mesh. If you have a lot of speed it can beat OZR. If you have great cover corners and safeties it hurts on the passing reads. DEs that can blitz aren’t nearly as potent, nor are exotic full house blitzes and the like. But it’s not like you can say ’okay, our first plan is to hire Nick Fairley, and then".

The only way I can see Chip leaving is through an NFL contract, solely for the opportunity to prove himself at the next level. Unfortunately I could see this happening. If I was a NFL GM with a small market team, that is failing, I would take the risk. At the very least you’d get your fan base fired up. Yes, Pujols’ contract is too long, but who cares? He’ll still be MVP caliber for half the deal.

Paul’s fine, but he’s not coming anyway, it looks like.

As a huge USC fan told me tonight, keeping Kalil isn’t a big deal in and of itself. It’s nice, of course, but it’s not game-changing. However, Kalil and Barkley are great friends, and he doesn’t think Kalil will come back if Barkley leaves. So Kalil staying is more about an indication that Barkley might stay.

Somebody asked Robert Woods, “Robert- Best Pac-12 defender?”

I drive the speed limit-ish, buckle my seatbelt, smoked none of it, actually go to class (who the hell invented 8 AM finals anyways)

so I think I’m in the clear.

Didn't he tear up his ankle at the end of the year?

Any word on his condition?

My parents believed in me.

I heard it was a bad break with some hardware involved...

anyway, we have had a bionic qb before.

I'm no doctor

but I do fight with one a lot on this blog.
And it’s my understanding that a break can actually be a “better” injury to come back from then a severe ligament injury like a torn ACL. Once the break heals, the bone should be nice and strong and ready to go.

Depends a lot on the fracture

But that’s generally true. Bones are a lot more vascular than tendons, cartilage, and ligaments, so they get healy healy humor goodness* from the body more readily.

Also,

Accorsing to the Bee, it’s a broken fibula. He will recover from this completely. For comparison, Cesc Fabregas scored on a penalty kick for Arsenal in the Champions League after having his fibula broken on the foul that gave him the PK. SO QUIT TELLING ME SOCCER PLAYERS ARE PUSSIES.

You must have gone to medical school

with the guy who stiched up my finger.

Me: Hey doc, I don’t like needles. Super glue it.
Doc: Sorry, can’t. You cut it on a bendy point and it needs stitches.
Me to wife: Did he seriously just say bendy point?
Wife: Yes. Now man up and get your finger fixed so I can go home and watch Survivor.

Chip in the NFL...

I think the main reason the NFL is going to want him, is they can sell more commercial time. Watching an NFL game is so boring because they take a commercial break every change of possession, time out, injury, water break etc. With a quick turn around offense, the NFL would love to feed their already overflowing coffers.

I noticed that was a problem I had watching the NCG last year and LSU this year. I wonder if the high profile games work against the ducks with all the TV timeouts.

Looking forward to the Rose Bowl. GO DUCKS!

Good Point. We oughta get Larry Scott to working on that. Get their TV timeouts shit together so they don't interrupt our 'flow.'
