I did it
I gave the Timbers an honest effort. Sat and forced myself to watch a half of soccer. It was boring. Lets start this baseball game.

watched some of the 2nd half
it finished 2-0 Toronto. Exhilirating.
In all seriousness, I’ve been to a couple of USL Timbers games, and they were a lot of fun. Seems to be like hockey for me, a fun thing to experience live, but not something that translates to TV as well.
I’ll probably pack up the family and go to a game or two a year in person. But its doubtful that I’ll be able to be a die hard follower like I am with baseball/football/basketball.

I plan on making a timbers game this year
mostly because I’ve never been to a pro soccer game and I’m curious as to how it is live.

its actually pretty fun
the enviornment is really good up there. Try and sit in or near the Timbers Army if possible.

All I ask for today's game
If Oregon has a lead late, please don’t let the bullpen blow it for once. Please.

And if they do, don't pop out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th
or fly out with runners on in the bottom of the 9th. Two for 23 with runners in scoring position yesterday.
C Jones
puts 3 guys on with only one hit, but the Ducks are able to escape without giving up a run.

I want to see us play smart baseball today and tomorrow
with a little urgency thrown in. I hate reading that the guys backed off when they got a big lead and went away from the game plan. Even Horton admits that we make the 8th and 9th innings way too interesting at times. I know he plays a lot of young guys, but we’ve given away at least 3-4 games this year so far and the Pac-10 won’t be easy for us if we don’t start playing better.
Maybe Jones will make up for his error with a couple hits.
Wow

Butler to the Final Four, incredible.
I am so impressed by Butler’s mental toughness. They’ve got some offensive talent in Howard and Mack and great team D, but they aren’t imposing on paper. They just don’t waste possessions and they challenge other teams to make the right play on every series. They play smart, team-oriented basketball.
I’d rank Brad Stevens right up there with any of the best college coaches ever. I don’t think it’s foolish to put him among the game’s greatest coaches considering his run of success at a small private school (not unlike another run by a now Hall of Fame coach at a small private school). He’s already a better game coach than Roy Williams and Billy Donovan, coaches that have won multiple championships.

What's funny is that Coach Horton thinks our bullpen is going to be our strength
by the end of the season and he said that we’re close to being a top 15-20 team again. I wish he’d quit saying that stuff. We have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be and all that preseason ranking and talk about hosting regionals/super regionals . . . well we’re just a long way from that.
I love that so many of our freshmen are contributing; they’re going to be amazing to watch the next two years. But I don’t see us bettering our record of last year. Too many issues hitting and pitching.
Too many issues hitting and pitching.
Agreed. Except our starting pitching. Our starters have been pretty much lights out this year. Our bullpen has killed us and our disappearance of hitting at the most inopportune times have buried us.
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
TOTALLY agree
Anderson, Boer and maybe Jones should each have 2 more wins a piece if we had a reliable bullpen and clutch hitter or two.
You know what I just thought about?
We miss E-Rod way more than we thought we would. He was clutch for us last year.
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
We may have one on our roster, like Sabol
but we might not find him until next year and then we’ll likely be starting over with our weekend pitching rotation (unless they all come back).
You’re right about Eddie. He seemed to rally the troops.
Actually Jones is a Soph
but with the way McGough is pitching, he may be available for another year!
I was trying to be hopeful that we'd see the 2010 McGough
sooner rather than later.
I really hope that Horton getting tossed today was some pent up frustration with the way these guys have played so far. They’re not going to go very far in the Pac with play like this, and I hope he makes the guys see that.
Right now we’re a middle of the Pac team (at best). We need to step it up in conference play if we have any hope of post season success.
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
I'm not even convinced we're post season material at this point
We don’t seem to have much toughness . . . no fire, sense of urgency, or swagger. To get where we were last year before post season, we’d have to win 25 more games (we have 37 left). I’m not sure where 25 wins are going to come from. We have 2 games with Seattle and 2 with Gonzaga, but it’s daunting looking at the Pac-10 the way we’re playing right now.
I think the thing that's frustrating
is that it’s not a fundamental thing, or lack of talent, or these guys just don’t want it. It’s simple execution at the right time that’s killing us. Closing pitching. Timely hitting. Moving guys along, sacrifices when they need to. (Amazingly our errors are down from last year).
It’s the little things that we’re not doing that would win us more games. And that’s tough to accept.
Lavender double U's have no soul

by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Mar 26, 2011 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions
So that's why Horton believes our bullpen will be our greatest strength by the end of the year
I’ll believe it when I see it, but I sure hope you’re right.
I'm not ready to jump off the bandwagon yet
baseball is a long season and we’ve seen these guys can go on 7 game runs. It won’t be easy in the Pac, but if they turn on the hitting, or get something solid on the back end of their rotation, we can easily make a good run in the Pac with the starting pitching we have.
We’ll just have to wait and see, and hell, that’s why Horton gets paid the big bucks.
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
Oh I'm not giving up yet either
and we plan to spend a couple weekend in Eugene to watch them play. But we were ranked in all five preseason polls and predicted to host a regional. Horton keeps talking about how good we are, but we continue to blow games that we were in a good position to win. Good teams, ranked and expected to go to regionals, don’t lose so many of those games. At this point, they find ways to win and that’s what makes them a good team. We’re a long, long way from being that kind of good team.
Patience, my friend.

Okay
In 3 games we are 3 for 38 with runners in scoring position and left another 19 on base today.
What can I say? It happens.
Especially when the team isn’t particularly great at hitting (like the Ducks).
Sometimes, you just can’t buy a timely hit.
I agree though, that’s putrid.

by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Mar 26, 2011 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
More putrid
40 left on base in 3 games (to go with the 3 for 38 with RISP)
Perfect example today
Two on and one out in the 15th and Serna gets picked instead of sacrificed or hit home. The little things are definitely frustrating (since this is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve mentioned it).
Agreed
but in baseball, like TQA said, those little things can turn your way real quickly. Man it’s fun to be talking about Ducks baseball.

We've played one third of our games though
and it’s time for us to do the little things to start making things turn our way and Horton needs to light a fire under these guys.
As much as it pains me to say it out loud
I wish we approached games with the chip that OS does. They were supposed to struggle this year, but they have been on fire after a couple early losses. I thought maybe we’d work out some of the kinks by now and be playing better.
Maybe the youth and injuries are too much to expect that we’d exceed expectations like last year. We have tickets for the UW series so hopefully we’ll get a couple against them. ASU will be tough though.
I like Marder
and A Jones and Pulfer. Those guys can be clutch too, but they’re young. Some of the other up and comers last year are struggling (Alto, Piazzisi and Serna). Overall our hitting is just weak (.237 avg) and just no one stepping up when we need hits the most.
Lavender double U's have no soul

Horton loves Marder
Aaron Jones had a rough day in the field with a couple errors and misplayed balls, but he can hit. Serna getting picked and then a full count fly-out with the bases loaded hurt today. Piazzisi breaking his hand sliding in practice isn’t helping either. Pulfer had chances today and yesterday to be a hero if only he could have gotten a hit with the bases loaded, but couldn’t pull it off.
I've heard Horton say a couple times that Marder
is so good he can play him in multiple positions. He loves his attitude too and said last year, they were grooming him to replace Eddie. So glad he didn’t break his finger when he slid.
He was good for awhile tonight, but you just knew what was going to happen
What has happened to him?
No idea
But his confidence is gone. From what I saw today, he still have decent speed and movement on his pitches, I just think his locations are off. I’m no baseball expert, but Horton really needs to do something with him.

Coach Horton's post game interview doesn't offer much hope for the rest of the season
unless we rectify (his word) our fundamentals. If we don’t, he said we’re going to come up short in a lot more games and thinks if will be interesting to see if we’ll bounce back tomorrow. What a difference in his tone and demeanor after three games! He looked dejected.
I’m going to stick with Delusional Optimism, and attribute that to having to watch twelve and a half innings from the clubhouse.
