Dustin Haines proves his value, finally gets Oregon some Fulmer Cup points
From The Oregonian:
Oregon has suspended quarterback Dustin Haines after he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest early Saturday morning by Eugene police responding to reports of a loud party.
Police say Haines became hostile and scuffled with officers. He was charged with with excessive noise, interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest.
While these are rather boring and mundane charges, they should represent our first Fulmer Cup points of the season. Congratulations, Dustin! You're known for being more than just the backup holder now!

Can anyone really learn to hold up a sign that has pictures of Dan Patrick, Mount Rushmore, a hamburger, and the work "Shifty" on it?
it’s a genetic ability.

No! Not the headless body behind the play signs!
Fuck you, Juju. We'll do it ourselves.

This short-ish Hawaiian looking guy broke into Shu's house last night and ran off with it
He had this mini afro hairdo and went running down the road carrying Shu’s laptop, which contained his incident counter-generating software.

Are we finally going to start scoring at our point-a-minute pace!!??

Exceedingly well played, Jonathan.

SPOILER ALERT: I’m sensing a sanctimonious article from a bald douche bag whose parents did not, and do not, believe in him.

I am now concerned of having run afowl (LOL GET IT?) of the AtQ community guidelines, so I should point out that I’m just referring generically to an abstract writer at some paper, and not particular to any particular employee of the Oregonian with a head like a bowling ball, a heart made of ice, and a mind also like a bowling ball.

This is all purely fictional and coincidental of course, just like said generic bald, douchebag fictional journalist.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
Exactly.

I don't think Haines deserves much credit
because in all honesty, it really doesn’t take a lot to get arrested by EPD at a loud party.
To Alcohol: The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!
Damn South Eugene kids and their undisciplined, party-animal lifestyles.
Oh, wait…
Cal Bears football... Doing less with more since 2002.
Dammit dude, didn't the government instructor teach the class about self-incrimination?
Besides, he led the football team to an 0-9 record in 2008. Damage enough to south rep.

Surely Jeremy, you would have known to hide in the bushes when the cops showed up. Kids these days got no game.
And, if I'm not mistaken
you, CaDuck, successfully navigated a Eugene riot your first week at school. Personally I think that qualifies you to hold the play cards. You should shoot Chip an email.
ESS EEE SEE football tryouts
Step 1) Commit crime
Step 2) Run from cops
Step 3) Make depth chart and roster from players not in jail/handcuffs
Step 4) Cut others
ESS EEE SEE SPEEEEEED
I think we’re catching on here on how to do this. Dustin is obviously not an ESS EEE SEE caliber player.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
Not to put a damper on your fun here, but I prefer NOT to see us in the Fulmer Cup
race. Just another excuse for the media to dredge up all kinds of junk about us, like this:

I agree
but if we’re going to have someone screw up, I’m glad it’s someone that is holding a clipboard and not someone pertinent on the field. I’d still prefer NO fulmer cup points, but unfortunately it happened.

I agree too, but CBS wasn't the only one to use it as an excuse to talk about last year's
problems. They even brought up a former walk-on that I’ve never heard of. Maybe they’ll count him for Fulmer points too. Sad.
Why does it matter if some media outlet brings up past transgressions? I don’t want to see our players arrested for their own sake, not because I care what others think.

I HATE seeing our players arrested
and I do care what their transgressions do to the good reputation that our coaches and players try very hard to establish and maintain. When someone screws up, others take notice and use it to try to taint our good reputation. I’m sorry that that bothers me as an alum, donor and fan.
others take notice and use it to try to taint our good reputation
So? Why does this matter at all?

I think what Ducks73 is getting at
and he can correct me if I’m wrong, is it hurts recruiting and you never want the perception of your program to be one of thugs, transgressions and players screwing up. I think what’s not being said is that we fans, the coaches and other players have no control over if someone is going to screw up.
All we can do is determine how we react to it.
I think one thing that hasn’t gotten enough coverage is how Kelly reacted to all the crap last year. He’s been consistent and firm with the guys and that’s all you can ask. He’s sending the right message to boosters, players and recruits that if you screw up he’ll treat you fairly but he’s not going to let it slide either.
That’s the message we want sent. That’s the reputation we need.

First, I don’t think it hurts recruiting. And second, who cares what the perception is? Oh no, Husky fans and Beaver fans are going to complain. Who gives a shit?
Your second part is right though. All that matters is Kelly’s reaction, and the type of players and men he’s creating at Oregon. If he’s doing what’s right in terms of discipline (and so far he has), I do not care what the “perception” is.

Why does it matter?
I have heard coaches from several sports, including Chip Kelly, speak enough times to tell you that they ALWAYS bring up the positive things that their athletes are doing. While they have no control over when, who, and how someone is going to screw up, they HATE having to deal with the negative stuff because it takes 100 times more time than the positive stuff. I know that our coaches tell our athletes that it is a privilege to represent the University of Oregon, and that they should do everything in their power not to bring disrepute to themselves, their program, and their school.
A positive image clears the way in recruiting student athletes and non-athletes to the University of Oregon and getting donors to support programs on the academic and athletic side. Like it or not, the University is very cognizant of the good that can come from positive media and works very hard to garner as much of it as they can. You may not care about perception, but I can guarantee that President Lariviere, our coaches, and athletes and parents do.
I’d like to believe that Kelly, Lariviere and others care about reality far more than how the program is perceived. Perception in and of itself does not matter. It doesn’t matter if the Haines incident means that moron writers bring up past transgressions, because that story they are trying to spin does not match up to reality.
The reality is that (as far as we can tell) Chip Kelly is building a program with discipline, hard work, and a focus on academic achievement.
I don’t care what the perception of our program is. I care what is actually happening in our program. husky or Beaver fans or pundits can say whatever they want. It won’t affect donations, recruiting, or the progress of our program as long as Chip and company keep doing what they are doing.

Last word from me . . .
I could care less about comments from husky or beavs, but from every conversation I have had with Lariviere and Frohnmayer, coaches, AD administrators, players, parents, etc. . . . they CARE about perception as it is a by-product of what you cite as important “discipline, hard work, and a focus on academic achievement”.
I agree in principle, but...
…if you don’t get into a spot of legal trouble, even the smallest thing, in college then you’re honestly not having enough fun, and football players, while they are rightfully held to a higher standard than the average college student, should not be excluded from having a college experience and learning from their mistakes and making some memories they’ll look back on and laugh about.
OBVIOUSLY I’m not referring to Jeremiah Masoli or anything, but to get up in arms over what Haines has done is silly.
The O is the new U
Obviously, I agree
I think you fell into the sar-chasm a bit. Nobody wants to see players get arrested.

wow.
Now, I don’t really know how good Haines is (he isn’t really ranked that highly by any of the recruiting services), but it’s clear he can run the football from this highlight reel, and that’s winning half the battle right there for being an Oregon quarterback.

Hilarious
Entering Chip Kelly’s doghouse probably means if Thomas ever get injured, the responsibility falls to Bryan Bennett to lead Oregon on the field. Bennett is a highly respected quarterback, but is he ready to handle the high-octane Duck attack in case that moment arrives?
“Probably” means Bennett will lead Oregon if Thomas is injured?? As if Haines was EVER going to see the field as a QB.
You think he knows that the highlight reel he's showing is mostly deep bombs to a 6'8 WR and a team that didn't win a game, and went on a 15ish game losing streak
All with Haines at QB?
