Quack Fix: Terrell Turner out, recaps of practice #4 and Ricky Heimuli
Man, what an ugly game last night between UConn and Butler. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of quack this morning to help you forget that game.
- The Ducks had the fourth practice of the spring yesterday and Rob Moseley writes that it was the defense coming out on top and making up for losing Saturday's competition day. Chris Courtney also offers his own practice notes, including highlighting the play of Terrance Mitchell.
- Defensive end Terrell Turner is most likely out for the remainder of spring practices. With Turner out, the Ducks are essentially practicing with four new starters on the line the line. Ultimately, the loss of Turner (assuming he'll be ready to go for fall camp) is not too worrying. His absence will allow for some valuable reps to those lower on the depth chart, which is important given the Ducks used an eight-man rotation on the line last year. The main beneficiary appears to be redshirt freshman Tony Washington.
- John Hunt has a feature on sophomore defensive tackle Ricky Heimuli, including a quote by Nick Aliotti comparing him to Haloti Ngata. Heimuli emerging into an all-conference level DT would be a huge boon to this defense.
-
And, if you're interested, Ken Goe has another story on the Will Lyles situation, focusing on Oregon's recent success in recruiting Texas.
Also, after the jump is a video of Chip discussing the most recent practice, as well as videos of Josh Huff and Eric Dungy

Until he tells us that
Seastrunk and Williams signed on the SAME DAY! CONSPIRACY!
It’s like it was National Signing Day or something…
I credit my urine for the victory.
oops you said it first
I also loves how he talks about the NCAA’s investigation and then a paragraph or two later states how Oregon’s spokeman Dan Weiler states they’ve received no notice of inquiry from the NCAA.

Is everyone still assuming that Oregon is under investigation just because of the Joe Schad report from a month ago? Because so far, it seems like the NCAA has requested some info, gotten it, and well, that’s about it.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I don't think we can in any way assume
we’re totally in the clear, considering the glacial pace at which the NCAA moves.
Goe:
The NCAA’s preliminary investigation will determine whether there is evidence suggesting that Lyles steered Seastrunk and/or other athletes to Oregon, or whether Lyles functioned as a representative for the Ducks.
Lavender double U's have no soul

Doubtful
I mean the reality is that the NCAA can only determine if something happened if the parties talked, preferably with corroborating evidence. I think the odds of that happening with Lyles are remote at best.
Kinda cute that Goe thinks something will actually happen. Check that-gicven what just happened with Auburn on TV and the fact that the NCAA can’t get anyone to talk specifics about that, the whole world sees how impotent the NCAA really is.
MD just played a Jedi mind-trick on you.
By highlighting “will,” he makes it look as if Goe is saying the prelim is certainly going to find against UO. Look at the sentence without “will” highlighted:
“The NCAA’s preliminary investigation will determine whether there is evidence suggesting that Lyles steered Seastrunk and/or other athletes to Oregon, or whether Lyles functioned as a representative for the Ducks.”
Not quite as sinister. In this context it reads that the prelim is just that: a preliminary investigation to determine if there is cause for an actual investigation.

Sorry, I knew I should have added “Emphasis mine” on there.
I read the will as the investigation is on-going and find that hard to believe when the UO spokesman said they have received no inquiry from the NCAA. I wasn’t trying to mislead. Sorry if I did.

Funny how the highlighting of such an innocuous word can change the whole context, isn’t it? A journalist would be accused of editorializing if he had done the same without a footnote about the emphasis. Oops! Did I say too much?

One thing that interested me
I braved the comments and actually saw something worth reading, how journalists use the phrase “refused to comment” as an indictment of guilt. Never really thought about it that way.
I credit my urine for the victory.
Yep
and normally it’s at the end of an editorial to add the extra punch that validates the piece. Like if I were to say:
Ken Goe is nothing more than a sensationalist writer who spends most of his time pandering to the Oregonian higher ups in hopes that his tripe will later garner even half the attention theirs do.
Goe has refused to comment.

I’m not necessarily a big fan of any of the Oregonian sports reporters, but I don’t mind Goe that much. I think he has become more and more balanced since he was put on the Duck beat. Speaking of which, it is interesting how he seems to have taken over of the majority of the Duck beat from John Hunt who had been on it for some time. I wonder what the story is there. Hunt seems to be less prolific than he was previously so possibly he’s dropped to part time or something.
Yeah, I don’t have a real problem with Goe. But at this point, they’re just rehashing all the old news, and making very obvious statements about when players sign.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I've never really cared for Goe
His writing seems to be rather meaningless. Hunt was ok, but at least he was pretty consistent with his updates. Plus, I don’t think I’ve forgiven Goe for calling out ATQ and backing Bachman for that terrible piece she put together.

Addicted to Quack had this diatribe about Bachman’s story. Me? I’m glad there is a reporter out there willing to slog through public documents and follow the money. All she did was dig for information and report the facts. She leaves the value judgments to others. If ATQ doesn’t want to be fully informed, he/she/it shouldn’t read her work.
Lavender double U's have no soul

That left a bad taste in my mouth as well, but I think he was pretty offended on his co-worker’s behalf and to be honest, that thread did get a little wild. I’m not sure that it was our best moment here at AtQ. I kind of figure that those of us that hang out here at AtQ sort of consider ourselves a ‘team’ and were pretty hot in Dave’s defense, and I kind of respect Goe for standing up on behalf his teammate as well.
I'd respect it if the calling out was balanced.
I know many people on here have no problems calling out Dave, myself, Jared, etc if we put a shitty piece out there (comment or post… see above for my latest example). I also have no problem going to bat for them as well. I’m still waiting for someone at the Oregonian to call out Canzano or Bachman for some of the garbage they put forward.
Instead it feels like circling the wagons and “don’t pick on us, we can write what we want and you don’t have to read it if you don’t want to be informed.”
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
You’re right, it did feel that way. And the thing I didn’t like about it the most was the condescending manner – accusing us of not wanting to be fully informed just because most of us had an issue with the tone of Bachman’s article. Okay, now I’m getting pissed again. I’m going to have to go post some flames over at OLive. Thanks alot Matt Daddy!

I spoke with Bachman about that piece
I’m a commercial real estate appraiser and I had a real problem with comparing the Jaqua Center to the properties that she did or even Class A office space. It just totally missed the point.
She was pleasant enough, but her response was she didn’t have time to do a more thorough job because she wanted to be first with the story. The Oregonian paid to have U of O disclose the info and she had to beat the competition to the punch.
“So you chose to put out a story that was poorly researched simply to be first?”, I asked. “That’s the nature of the business”, was her reply.

So if I am reading this right
Start with a kernel of truth,
add some fluff, to make it look like there is something there,

She freely admitted that she couldn't really find
anything to compare it to, which of course is the whole point. These one-off, special purpose buildings are in a class of their own.
One of the biggest rules of appraisal is to “not be misleading”. I told her that by comparing an architectural statement like the Jacqua center to Class A office space in Lake Oswego was totally misleading. Sure, if you want a place to stick some people so they can get some work done, a double wide trailer does the trick.
If you want to create a focal point for your campus, AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE CAMPUS, then you go all out.
To Alcohol: The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!
Wait....Bachman is collecting undperpants?
What kind of operation are they running at the Oregonian?
Journalists can be sloppy across the board.
Bellamy, on the R-G page, posted a blurb about former Oregon HB Mickey Bruce last week after he died. There were a couple of fairly major fact errors in his post that could have been easily corrected with a trip to the R-G’s own morgue. Just a little research.
If they’ll mess up something that trivial, it surprises me not a bit to see a journalist admit that it’s more important to get it there, than get it right.
As much shit as conservatives like to throw at the NY Times, they aren’t a sloppy organization as a rule. They mess up now and then (see the Jeffords death announcement, Jayson Blair, etc), but when it happens they are quick with the mea culpas. They have standards. Obviously, these standards are not universal.

WSJ is a great paper but they have their biases too.
"What the hell was that?"

Of course they do
As I’ve said before I don’t mind biases. I think it’s almost impossible for people to completely keep their biases out of their writing. What I look for instead is at least an attempt to report facts, a balance of opinions and when you do screw up… admit it and try and improve.

ESPN Insider: Oregon having issues on defense
You’d think they could choose better headlines, they just mention that Turner is likely out for the spring based on Moseley’s report, and that he was the only starter from last year. Do they not know about Heimuli, Hanna, Jordan, Keliikipi, etc.? Are all sports journalists this lazy?

I’m getting really excited about the defensive line…
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Call me crazy
But I think it’s going to end up being the strength of our D next year. The starting lineup looks solid if not dominant. The key will be if we can add some depth behind the starters, getting guys like Remington and Ebert involved.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
I think the secondary will be strength. That unit is absolutely loaded at every position with talent and experience.
I think the big key will be the drop end position. Rowe was really versatile, and if they can come close to replacing that, I think that the middle and added experience at the other end will lead to some high level play.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Secondary vs. D-line
Even with the departure of Jackson, I agree that the depth and experience allows for the secondary unit to be the show on D.
But as we saw in ‘08. Even if the secondary is beastly, if the other units aren’t up to par, they’re going to get beat. That’s why I find the reports of our DL and LB depth from last year emerging very comforting.
Who needs normal sleep patterns?

We have that with Jordan and Hanna IMO
There’s a lot of experience at end (3 of top 4 ends returning), and a lot of outstanding young talent at DT. I’m encouraged.

The strength?
Cliff Harris, John Boyett, Eddie Pleasant? Any of these names ringing a bell?
I’m excited about the D line because I think we’re getting an upgrade in size and talent at 2-3 spots. But we are losing some depth and experience.
Lavender double U's have no soul

Not a fan of Eddie Pleasant
He’s not a particularly good tackler and thus he’s of limited use in run support, and while he’s fast, he’s not good in coverage either. He’s a great blitzer, but that’s about it. I’ve never been a big fan of his, he’s better as a part-time option IMO. He gets burned way too often for me to feel comfortable with him back there. I’d feel better about Dargan stepping up and taking some snaps away from Pleasant.
The other corner spot across from Harris is a major question mark at this point. Gildon was okay, but we really need someone who is a sure tackler to replace TJIII. He was a really important part of our secondary; played very well in coverage this past year and his tackling was tremendous. He deserved the accolades he received. Without him, some of Boyett and Harris’s gambles in coverage are much more risky.
I feel great about Harris and Boyett, but I feel almost as good about Turner, Heimuli, Hanna, Keliikipi, Jordan, and Co. I think we have more issues in the LB corps and secondary than we do on the D-line.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
Pleasant should be much improved this season. He was at a totally new position last year, and he had some difficulties adjusting. I have faith in him.
I’ll guarantee you this-if Chip Kelly doesn’t think he can get the job done, he’ll find someone else that can.
