Quack Fix: LaMichael James Discusses Willie Lyles, Urban and Chip Break it Down, Arizona State Uniforms
One year ago today, the big news of the day surrounded Bellotti's golden parachute, kicker Mike Bowlin scheduled arraignment on charges stemming from a brawl near campus, talk of Butler's Brad Stevens possible interest in the Ducks mens' basketball team job, and Nate Costa battling Darron Thomas for the starting QB position. After I finish this quack fix, I'm going to knock on some wood because this has been a fun and exciting year...and for all the right reasons. On to the quack:
- Anyone for a Sporting News College Football pre-season poll? Ducks come in at #3 behind the LSU Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners with the article mentioning that we need to rebuild on defense. Maybe it's just me, but I'm way more confident about our defense next year than most. With so many players getting so much playing time in meaningful situations, I just don't see much of a drop off. Yes, we have to replace some key difference makers, but guys step up. They do every year.
- Where I do think we've got some interesting challenges to address happens to be at the wide receiver position with the departure of Jeff Maehl and DJ Davis. It will be tough getting used to the inexperience on the outside. We do have senior Lavasier Tunei and sophmore Josh Huff as the veterans but after that, no wide receiver has more than 4 catches from last year. I'm sure glad Scott Frost stuck around after being courted by Nebraska.
- One priority in the spring is to get some depth behind David Paulson at tight end.
- LaMichael James discussed how he feels about Willie Lyles and the situation Lyles finds himself in. Some of his statements echo my thoughts regarding which angles can be used to sell papers. Although I would normally expect LMJ to downplay the situation, he certainly didn't distance himself from Lyles. In fact, he defended him, saying that they were close.
- If you haven't seen it, here's a great video where Urban Meyer and Chip Kelly break down a few plays of the Oregon offense. For those that call this type of football "gimmicky", my response is simple. The football nerds are beating the football jocks.
- The Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling team will participate in the inaugural National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association National Championship this weekend.
- In uniform news, I can't wait to see what Arizona State has in store for us in their big reveal!
With the Spring Game fast approaching, I'll be posting some details on an ATQ get together sometime in the next week. In the meantime, please relive the event by checking out benzduck's awesome slideshow from last year. I cannot guarantee that Dr. Delight will make an appearance.

From Duck Territory...
Here’s some after practice video of David Paulson and Chip Kelly.
I’m really excited to see what the tight ends can do this year. With Paulson and Williams back, and two young incredibly talented freshmen, it will be an exciting position to watch. And with depth questions for the receiving corp, the flexibility of the position will be big.

Yeah, after Huff and Tuinei, there is no experience, and the talent level isn’t all that impressive.
I don’t doubt that the group will be competent, and will continue their excellence in blocking. But until the incoming freshmen class starts to develop, I’m afraid we just won’t have a great threat at the WR position. We haven’t had that for some time now, but still, it sure would be nice to have a WR that scares opposing defenses, rather than just making them pay when they don’t respect the position.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Who would you consider the last Oregon receiver to wear that distinction?
As productive and effective as Maehl was last season, I don’t think it fits. Defenses had to account for him, but no one was game planning around him, so much as they would taking away Thomas’ options and James’ running lanes by trying to get bodies in the backfield.
I think Demetrius Williams in 2005 best fits the bill. Before Clemens went down, and to a lesser degree afterward it just seemed like he was consistently making crucial receptions and was a “go to” guy.

Yeah, I’d say it has to be D. Williams. It seems like for many years there, Oregon always had a real go-to receiver that was a threat to opposing defenses. D. Williams fit that, as did Parker, Howry, Hartley, Griffin. And for many years there, we had the big threat and a young guy that was coming up under him, who carried that tradition on. We had that in 2005 with D. Williams and J. Williams. But Jaison just never materialized as that threat.
WR and DT have been the two positions that just haven’t panned out in recent years like we’d hoped, and that’s why Pflugrad and Gray were let go from their positions. It seems like that is changing.
This season, I could see Huff being that threat if he develops over spring and fall camps. Hopefully we can get some solid depth behind him.

Curious...
I was wondering what you meant by “talent level isn’t all that impassive.”
Do you mean the receiving core as a whole? Or just the guys immediately behind LT and Huff The Magic Dragon?
I think Diante Jackson and Tyrece Gaines should step up big. Oh, wait…
Seriously though, while I think they won’t all have huge impacts, our receivers coming up the ranks are looking pretty good. I think Vaughn will make his mark, and Blackmon will have a chance to make plays based on his pure athleticism. You also have to feel pretty good about the likes of Sumler, Kelley, Lowe, etc.
I’m not disagreeing with you; I’m probably slightly closer to agreeing with you. I just think that our biggest problem will be a lack of experience, not a lack of talent.
by DuckIt on Apr 7, 2011 11:13 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
The lack of talent was more about those that are participating in spring practice. Blackmon, Vaughn, and Kelly will be a huge improvement and could develop into that threat we’ve lacked the past few seasons.

A couple defensive updates from old Kenny Goe
He had an article yesterday on on the linebacker position, and Clay and Alonso stepping up. I never realized how big Alonso is. While depth is a minor concern right now, it shouldn’t be once the freshman class gets in this fall.
Also, the intro to his daily news rundown is on the drop end position. While Hanna is starting at the position, Kaddu and Lokombo are learning the position as well. Sounds like the defensive coaches are doing whatever they can to keep the most talented players on the field at all times.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
The only Alonso play I can remember came in the '09 Civil War,
the Beavs had first and goal, and Alonso game through the line unblocked, squared up and demolished Quizz in the backfield. He looked absolutely huge.
It shows just how good things have been for uo in the past decade when you can have confidence in the defense because ‘someone will step up they always do’ there are alot of programs where that sentiment just doesn’t exist.

Getting to the bottom of an OregonLive article and seeing the "Comments" header is kind of like going into the kitchen in the office and seeing that someone brought cake.
You had no intention of having cake today and know that taking a slice isn’t a good idea, but you do anyway, and then immediately hate yourself and wish you hadn’t.

Consider it like smoking. Cold Turkey is the only answer. When you see that Comments word just close the window. Walk away and go running or eat some M&Ms.
First, I love this:
The football nerds are beating the football jocks.
Second, my favorite part of the UB/CK thing was when UB was so impressed with the blocking of our receivers. And then how CK replied that if you don’t block, you aren’t getting the ball thrown to you. That is such a huge part of our game and we’re really going to miss DJ Davis in particular, although Maehl was no slouch at blocking either. Hopefully those stepping in this year develop that skill as well.
With how the coaching staff demands blocking, that is sure to continue. When Scott and Williams graduated, people were concerned about blocking, but if anything, it improved under Frost.

Finally some real news!!!
I only joined this damn site to follow Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling team, and all that it means to be a pro-tumbler!
(I have been trying to get a steady fan base for pre-tumble tailgating – or as I like to call the tumble in the jungle.)
Yes, I know we had a rough off season with Helli Mary running off with the sorority microwave, but this teams has more stunts than a Bond movie!
Sure knowing that half of the team is from Texas, and had never heard of Oregon until Willamena Lyles “educated them” that Oregon was the Cirque du Soleiel of College sports sounds bad.
& yes, I am happy for Bertha Baxter narrowly escaping a Yakuza death threat in LA (according to a good source of mine).
But most of all I’m fired up for the Championship – give me hell ladies!
(Full disclosure – any one of them i’m sure could kick my ass so mad props and good luck!)
Hoover: They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal!
You guys should really bump the Simi Fili fanshot to the main page, or add it to the Quack Fix…it really is a phenomenal read, well worth your time.
I was a bit concerned
When Fili said something like ’killing people is easy, anyone can do that. Staying in school an focusing is hard".
Killing people is easy? I get that it’s not hard to pull a trigger, and maybe it’s poorly stated, or full of bluster, but that disturbed me.

I really don't see why
Comcast/NBC would pay over $200MM for broadcast rights and then immediately exclude a large amount of viewers and potential revenue. I understand the Blazers/Comcast situation but that’s the exception and not the norm and with the creation of the Pac 12 Network and it’s own channel it would be just about how much subscription money Dish and DirectTV are willing to pay to access that channel. I don’t think DirectTV and Dish want to risk losing that many customers west of the Rockies.
Also, I’m more willing to put up with Comcast/NBC given the current national channel opportunity and online media capabilities versus Fox and their reluctance to show anything outside of LA, no national channel exposure and zero online media. Not to mention Fox just lost the Lakers in LA and are looking for even MORE LA sports to broadcast. Not really looking forward to UCLA and USC being on their national channel every week and everyone else relegated to second and third tier.

Wonder if NBC is playing out an endgame on the Notre Dame situation
I can’t imagine NBC/Comcast paying that much money and relegating the P12 games to their crap tier of cable-only outlets.
"Dispatch yourself with the utmost precision, and proceed as far as your individual excellency will permit." - John McEwan
I see them wanting a second game
on NBC. Put the ND game in the early slot and either afternoon or evening the Pac 12 game (or flip it if ND has a late must watch game).
I think NBC is tired of everyone changing away from their channel as soon as the ND is over (which is usually around the first quarter).
Plus, expect NBC to make a huge push for the Big East when their deal comes up cause then they’d have a major college football/basketball game in the East, Mid and West.
Lavender double U's have no soul

I wonder if the ND ratings have been anywhere close to what NBC expected when they initially signed that deal 20 years back (remember, back when ND was actually relevant? Seems so long ago, some of y’all weren’t even borned yet..)
The current contract is up in 2015. I smell an exit strategy.
"Dispatch yourself with the utmost precision, and proceed as far as your individual excellency will permit." - John McEwan
I believe they just recently renewed that contract, and that was during the darkest period of Notre Dame football. A littler diversification away from just Notre Dame would give them a pretty decent bargaining chip once the 2015 contract is set to expire. Especially if they get the Big East contract as well.
Lavender double U's have no soul
Addicted to Quack
They’ve been rolling five-year renewals for a few contracts now. The last renewal was in mid-2008 for the contract that expired in 2010.
Apply the same strategy to the current contract that expires in 2015 and the renegotiations happen in mid-2013.
If NBC/Comcrasst has a P12 agreement in play in mid-2013, they’ll have leverage to use in the next ND negotiations; assuming they plan to renew at all, they could extend ND for a (relative) bargain price.
Worst case scenario: Tom Hammond announcing Pac-12 games.
