Cliff Harris cited for driving 118 mph, driving while suspended
New release just sent out by OSP:
On June 12, 2011 at approximately 4:32 a.m. an off-duty OSP trooper saw a high speed vehicle southbound on Interstate 5 from Albany and called an on-duty trooper who was patrolling south in that area. The trooper was northbound, saw the speeding vehicle and obtained a radar reading up to 118 mph as it passed by an area where there was an emergency vehicle turnaround.
The trooper turned into the southbound lanes and overtook the speeding 2011 Nissan Altima near milepost 230. The trooper contacted the driver who was subsequently identified as CLIFF HARRIS, age 20, from Eugene. A check with Oregon indicated HARRIS was driving with a suspended operator's license. HARRIS was cited for Driving While Suspended and Exceeding the Speed Limit in Excess of 100 mph to wit: 118 mph in a 65 mph speed zone. A passenger with a valid operator's license drove the rented vehicle from the stop scene.
I'm not 100% sure this is the Cliff Harris, but the age and residency make it seem very likely.

Honest questions. How does a 20 year old on a suspended license get a rental car? Does Harris get dismissed? Who got the rental for him if he didn’t?
Are you (as a fanbase) worried about this?

Does Harris get dismissed?
Haahahahah, no. And no, I’m not worried one bit about a speeding ticket.

Even if he was damn near doubling the speed limit?
Without the legal right to operate a car? And isn’t this like his third transgression?
I’m not sure about OR, but in WA, that’s reckless driving.
by B Money on Jun 13, 2011 3:15 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s a speeding ticket. Was it a smart thing? No. Should he think about it again? Sure. Should his parent rip him a new one for what he is going to do to their insurance costs. Absolutely. Should he be kicked off the football team for a speeding ticket? No.
Besides, it’s not like he had weed in the car and ran from the cops

It's a speeding ticket on a suspended license
Which was suspended from failure to appear at a date from another failure to appear, which was a date for an MIP. Is that right?
Defend him all you like, I’ll drop it because clearly, repeated disregard for the law is no big deal in the Daddy household. If this were the first time he screwed up, I wouldn’t have bothered coming over here to ask. I’ll go ahead and leave now since I’m not in any sort of mood for a dick measuring contest.
But just for the record, I would have liked to have seen Fogerson gone.
by B Money on Jun 13, 2011 6:07 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
So in the grand scheme of things we're
Talking about an MIP and speeding tickets. The suspended license and failure to appear are a result of speeding tickets and MIP. Are those really that bad?
Is it really anything different than any general college student might deal with?
Repeat offender. Ok. That’s a concern and something the coach and parents need to address, but dismissal from the team for what are really minor issues of any college student? That’s a bit harsh.

I think that a game suspension would be overly harsh. Dismissal from the team would be pure fucking insanity.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Dismissal for insubordination seems reasonable
I’m also of the belief that playing college football is a privilege, and that if I were to get popped doing a buck twenty on I-5, that I would probably lose my job. Especially if didn’t show up to court on more than one occasion.
It’s not like we’re talking 65 in a 60, on a suspended due to some mishandled paperwork. We’re talking about a suspension for missing a court date for another suspension for missing a court date, after getting an MIP. Individually they’re pretty harmless and stupid, but at what point do you hold the kid accountable for being an idiot?
I drank and did stupid shit as a 20 year old, nearly everyone does. The key differences are that a) I covered my stupidity up and b) I didn’t represent a major university. I’m not calling for him to be kicked off the team. It was an honest question, because of the fact that he’s had documented attitude and legal problems in the past. I wasn’t trying to crucify him, it just seems that he’s quite cavalier about doing as he pleases.
at what point do you hold the kid accountable
Awesome wording. He’s a KID. Kids do stupid shit. Does that mean it’s not stupid? No, it’s stupid shit. Does that mean it’s not shit? No, it’s stupid shit. The KID has done some stupid shit. But it’s harmless stupid shit. He didn’t attack anyone. He didn’t do drugs, steal, run from the cops, break into anyone’s house, etc.
I’m not trying to excuse what he did or what he’s done, but like you alluded to, the Daddy house isn’t going to crucify a KID for a few mistakes while they are still KIDS. Hell, how else do we learn except to screw up and learn from them.
I don’t agree with jtlight in that if he was given a one game suspension, I’d be ok with that. And if Kelly decided his punishment was run the Autzen stairs until he puked, I’d be ok with that too. But dismissing him from the team? That’s just as stupid. These are innocent KID mistakes that many (me and you included) have done and didn’t get caught for. It doesn’t mean he should be crucified for being caught. Punished? Yes. Crucified? No, and dismissing from the team is crucifying him.

You're completely missing the point
the point is not that he screwed up, everyone screws up. The point is that he screwed up, for the third time. How many chances do kids (fully grown, legally adult, able to to go to war, carry a pistol and be held responsible for their actions kids, but kids none the less) get to screw up before they get punished? At some point, if you can’t exhibit the ability to abide by the rules, then you start to lose the privilege afforded to you previously. For the last time, I’m not calling for him to be kicked off the team, I was asking a question because I was mostly unfamiliar with his history beyond reading some blurbs about legal and attitude issues in the past.
Lastly, I really don’t want to mitigate what constitutes harmful behavior, but doing 118mph on a suspended license (and at one point uninsured) might be to the people on the road or in the car with him.
No you're missing the point
We’re talking about raising kids here. The decisions I and many others made at age 20 are not indicative of fully grown adults. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be punished. I laughed when you questioned whether or not he should be dismissed from the team, because that is asinine at this point no matter how many minor mistakes the kid makes. As a coach and parent you’re trying to raise the kid to make good decisions.
Now, I’m willing to admit that kids are going to screw up and punishment should follow those screw ups (both from a parental as well as an authority figure like a coach). But let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill here. We’re talking about failure to appears (really not that hard for a kid to miss, I missed one in my life) or MIPs (come on, what college student hasn’t flirted with an MIP) and speeding tickets (I don’t even need to begin to defend a kid driving a rental getting a speeding ticket do I?). These are minor situations and taken individually over a 2+ year period don’t seem too insurmountable from a character stand point, now do they? Collectively? Yes, I agree that the KID needs an intervention/talking to/ass kicking from his parents.
But he hasn’t really jeopardized the program or his coach or the players on his team. Most of these aren’t even misdemeanors, they’re citations and if he wasn’t a college athlete no one would even know about them. So let’s just have a little perspective about “should he be dismissed” or are we as fans “worried about this.”
That’s what I’m saying.

I was looking for some perspective
Like I said, I came here to get your take on his past and what this meant for his playing future. We can agree to disagree on what should happen, but I really wasn’t here to stir the pot. I’m interested in knowing if one of the better CB’s in the country is going to be playing come Nov. 5th.
The whole situation struck me as odd, and instead of sitting on a Husky blog and hearing everyone so eloquently state how this is the end of Oregon, I decided to come get a more realistic POV from this site. You should know by now that I attempt to be respectful on your blog, at least when it comes to sports.
No we appreciate you being here.

With a lot of what your saying. Dismissal? No chance. I do think that suspension would be totally reasonable for arguably Oregon’s biggest game of the year.

even though some of your comments may be conflicting:

I’ve only responded to your question of whether as a fan I think he should be dismissed. Which again I think is lunacy. I have also said he should face punishment, but that punishment should fit the crime. I’m trying to stay even minded about this in that he’s a high profile player on a high profile team and doing something stupid while at the same time he’s a kid and stupid acts pretty much go with the territory and shouldn’t get blown out of proportion just because they live under a microscope.

Why does everyone on this blog love B Money and despise the Gekko?
Is it my bulging eyes?
Is it my irritating habit of talking about myself in the third person?
Is it his suave gambler’s aura?
Is it possible for the Gekko to get a hug?
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

He would probably have had someone else, likely a family member, sign for the rental car. He could still be added as a driver even if he wasn’t 24.

I don't know about his family history.
But there is a new murmur that the car was rented by a UofO employee for legit reasons on Friday, and he paid them for using the rental afterwards and said his friend was going to drive or something like that.

So
I really want to say a lot of really mean things right now.
All I can think to say is when we lose to LSU and Cliff isn’t on the field and he’s let the team down there are going to be a lot of angry people inside and outside of that locker room.
Three things. His license was suspended because he was found guilty of MIP in 09 because he didn’t show up in court to defend himself.
A few months later he was pulled over and cited for speeding and driving without a license, he was found guilty because, HE DIDN’T SHOW UP IN COURT.
This isn’t the first time and Chip doesn’t have much love for repeat offenders. Way to sabotage yourself Cliff and drag the whole program through the mud while you do it. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
He was bigger than the team with the way he talked, and now he’s above the law with the way he acts. Grow up.
Quack Quack Bitches!
Take your last sentence,
grow up. He’s a kid and if he wasn’t Cliff Harris no one would say another word. Not saying what he did was right but OMG he wasn’t on drugs or alcohol or committing a felony. When I was around that age that is what all the guys wanted to do.

The truth is
He’s not just another kid. People in the public eye are held to a higher standard, like it or not. Just because you want to do it doesn’t mean you should, he’s got to realize that and from what I’ve seen he doesn’t. I wouldn’t be this upset if he wasn’t a repeat offender.
That’s what pisses me off, he’s taken nothing from the last two times he’s done something stupid like this and got caught.

I don’t want to act like I know the kid. All I have to go on are his actions in the past and his actions a couple nights ago. Is it wrong for me to be upset? People in the media don’t know Terell Pryor but they’re awfully fast to persecute him. I know you want to defend the kid because he’s a UofO player but that doesn’t excuse him from accountability.
Quack Quack Bitches!

You don’t know that he hasn’t had accountability. You assume he hasn’t.
He’s in the public eye, but fuck the concept of “higher standards” for college students. They aren’t higher standards, they are double standards. He’s just as faulty and human as the rest of us, anyone that assumed otherwise are simply willfully ignorant.
It's spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-L-I-K-E-A-B-O-O-B-J-O-B"
You are upset because of an incident in which you do not know all the details. And on top of that, you rail that Cliff hasn’t learned any lessons, without knowing any of the details of significant of the previous events. Nothing like a little perspective.
As for accountability, what the hell do you define as accountability? The normal legal process not accountable enough? Whatever happens, he’s not getting away without punishment. At the very least, he’ll be paying a hefty fine. For what he did, anything more than that would be pretty stupid.

I've driven from Hood River all the way until about a mile east of Portland going.....
between 110 and 115. I was driving a good ol’ 92 Nissan Stanza. A guy in his 40’s or 50’s was driving a Beamer. We weren’t racing, just cruising down the road taking turns leading the way for a while. Was it really dumb? Yes. But speeding is something almost all of us are guilty of.

If an individual claims a "Holier Than Thou tsk tsk" argument in regard to speeding....
Then I just want to state that Oregon drivers are generally the slowest, worst, most oblivious drivers in the country. One might just ‘Have to’ floor it to 100+ to make an appointment after they’ve been stuck behind a Prius and a Subaru wagon going 10 under the speed limit for the last hour. And nobody ever merges out of the left lane either.
But speeding through Albany ( where everybody knows the Statie’s lurk with their radar guns) IS a crime of stupidity.

I don't give two armpit farts about him driving 118 on I-5.
I care moderately that he’s enough of a kducklehead to do this on a suspended license.
I’m bothered by the whole who-rented-him-the-car thing. Reserving judgement until Phil’s minions have time to whitewash the records the whole story comes out.
Verbing weirds language.
The rental issue is the only thing here that is even mildly concerning to me. But I don’t see that going anywhere, even worst case scenario.
