Weekend Quack Fix: Practice, we're talking about practice; Jordan Jefferson now is ready to be a leader
Two weeks from today. Just one more Saturday to go without college football. I'm so excited, I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it. I'm so excited it, I just can't hide it, I know I know I know I want Quack, I want Quack.
- Looks like Friday practice was an opportunity for Kelly and the Ducks to try some guys at new positions. Moseley points out in his Friday practice report that Dior Mathis was playing some WR, and Nick Musgrove flipped over to TE to fill in for once again injured Curtis White.
- Raise your hand if you think Jordan Jefferson deserves a suspension. I don't. But it's time for him to stop being in the wrong place. Period. I don't have any questions about Jefferson's ability to lead LSU, and I'm not celebrating a bar fight, just adding some commentary like a good columnist would.
- Women's soccer got off to a good start as they took down Wyoming in the season opener 2-0. Maddy Mercier scored the first goal in the 16th minute and Bri Pugh added the capper in the 23rd. It may just be women's soccer, but damn it's good to talk about Oregon Duck games again.
- Ted Miller had a awesome zinger against OSU in his Best case-worst case piece on Friday morning. In the afternoon he opened up the mailbag and answered a number of questions regarding Thomas, Harris and The Chronic. Here's my opinion on pot. I don't really care. I know that makes me a Duck fan with my head stuck in the sand, or blind or whatever. But honestly, if you've lived through the Jailblazer era, you're grown immune to Gonj stories. I know it's illegal, I know it brings even more bad publicity to the school I love, and we've had our fair share in the offseasons. But I'd love for someone to compare the number of alcohol related deaths/incidents/arrests/problems to the number of Herb problems for college kids these days. As for the leadership arguments, if anyone has questions about that, please send my friend MarineCorpsDuck, he's got a few words for you.
- Lastly, who else is excited to watch basketball this year? Oh, you are too? You must not be an NBA fan, cause pretty damn sure that ain't happening. As for the Ducks, Oregon is bringing a bevy of new talent and upgrading a number of spots from last year's surprise competitors and
CBI Champs(yep, that last part still doesn't matter). Personally, I'm excited to see a healthy Jacob back. I really think he'll excel in Altman's system with his ability to play in the mid-range game. Add to that the play makers and talent around him and now he's not going to see as many double teams or help side defenses.
That's the Quack I got for now. Check out the Kelly video after the jump...

Two new blog posts at The Duck Stops Here
Oregon coaches excel at player evaluation, position switches
The move was described by Chip Kelly today as a three-day experiment, citing Dior’s value as a special teams player and the added flexibility it would give to the traveling squad, having a utility player who was able to fill in both ways. Moseley said Mathis flashed his speed in drills today, but had some trouble catching the ball. Normal, really, since for an entire year he’s mainly practiced knocking it down.
Football’s losing war on marijuana
The NCAA handbook defines marijuana as a banned substance. The regulations call for random testing, in fall camp and at championship events like bowl games, and players who fail are subject to a one-year suspension and a loss of eligibility. Ever humorless and unsympathetic, there’s no exception allowed for medical marijuana and no bonus points given for clever answers to the cops.
When was the last time an athlete was suspended for a positive marijuana test?
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I didn’t think it was legal to test students for marijuana use in Oregon.
Employees, yes, but students?
The "Beano Cook" of ATQ.
Maybe not normal students, but with NCAA regulations, I’m pretty certain that student-athletes are tested at various times.

hmmmmmm...
Ever humorless and unsympathetic, there’s no exception allowed for medical marijuana
But if a student athlete had a condition that could be treated with medical marijuana…why are they playing in the first place?

LSU is already facing the possible suspension of starting wide receiver Russell Shepard for the Oregon game because of an NCAA investigation into his off-campus living arrangement over the summer. Shepard has told reporters he may be suspended or he may not be suspended.

Sources confirm the 5-foot-9, 190 pound former five-star recruit has been granted his release paperwork from the University of Oregon. No official statement has been released by the University at this time.
He was noticeably absent from this morning’s practice at Oregon.
It’s unclear if Seastrunk will follow through with his requested release. It is expected by most close to him, that he will in fact leave the program, possibly heading to Baylor.
Doesn’t make it true, but if it is, how many of us are surprised?

It is possible.
I don’t know. But if you consider A) the Lyles situation B) the fact he’s had trouble getting comfortable with the offense C) he hasn’t shown consistency fielding kicks D) that DeAnthony Thomas has picked up the offense quickly and has been a standout amongst the newcomers E) Tra Carson not only brings a different style but has also (apparently) picked up the offense relatively quickly and F) even if Thomas and Carson weren’t stepping up, he has James and Barner ahead of him at RB and Huff, Barner, and an All-American punt returner in Harris ahead of him at the P/KR positions, it makes pretty good sense.

I think with DT2’s arrival plus academics, and that other story, no. I feel bad for him, as one thing that stuck in my head was how he was wanting to be mentored to be both and athlete and a young man and he saw CK as that figure. I really hope he finds success.
Hoover: They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal!
He had been surprisingly unsuccessful
Of course, with Dontae Williams gone too, our RB depth is both getting pretty thin and our big time recruiting in Texas proving less transformative than we had hoped (at least in the last couple of years)
Why is that?
We have 2 potential Heisman candidates starting on offense, both from Texas. Huff is from Texas. Carson. And several others. If the Ducks have anything close to the season we all anticipate with DT and LMJ leading the way the Williams and Seastrunk issues will be largely mitigated.

It seems like both De’Anthony Thomas and Carson will have to travel, and it makes it harder to redshirt Carson, particularly (juju forbid) LMJ or KB get dinged up. There’s Ford, but bless his heart, he’s strictly a mop-up back.
One bonus is, if the depth chart got ravaged like it does in some years at a particularly position, the Ducks have a dozen athletes they could stick at tailback and point north. Not ideal, but at least we’re not hopeless and helpless like the old days.
don't sleep on Ayele Forde getting a few reps

Reading my SI college football preview. They are showing Stanford tons of love. They named UO/Stanford the best game of the 2011 season (with UO/LSU at #3). They are also predicting Andrew Luck to win the Heisman and Stanford to win both the Pac-12 North and the Pac-12 Championship Game, finishing with a regular season record of 12-1.
How do you guys think Stanford will fare this year? I don’t think they’ll be nearly as good as SI is projecting them to be. A 9 or 10 win team? Sure. But I think SI is understating the loss of Harbaugh and Fangio, as well as some key personnel.
What say you, ATQ?
(Also, SI ranked the 10 best college gameday experiences, and UW was #8, and Oregon was #10.)

I don't get it. If I'm correct...
They lose 3 lineman, 3 receivers and the head coach who was completely responsible for their turn around (and I think other positional coaches on offense?).
We lose 2 (kind of 3) lineman and 2 receivers on offense.
They return all-world quarterback Andrew Luck, a solid tight end, and Stepfan Taylor.
We return a quarterback with VERY similar stats to Luck, all-world LaMike, Kenjon Barner, more experience on the Oline, a beastly Paulson, and two very capable receivers.
Why is it that they’re the ones who are going to kill everyone on offense while we struggle?
I’m not talking about the team as a whole. Who knows how things will pan out (though I do believe Oregon is considerably stronger than Stanford in most areas). But it’s REALLY hard to understand peoples’ rationale for claiming Stanford will be fine on offense while we struggle. As far as I see it, we lose less and return more. Which means they return less and lose more (it’s science). Seems obvious to me.
It's known as "Brent Musburger Syndrome."

Right?
And I’m not looking at the situation with Duck goggles (maybe a little, because I feel indignant about the whole thing), but they have SERIOUS questions. I mean, we have questions – but three new lineman? Three new receivers? Only modest production returning in Owusu and their TE? AND A NEW HEAD COACH?!?!
All I’m saying is that OUR transition didn’t pan out too well.
I know less about their defense. What are they returning over there? I know they have some really good players in Skov, and others; but how about the unit as a whole?
To be fair, if Owusu stays healthy he's a dangerous receiver and punt returner.
And the 2 returning OL are preseason All-P2. But the point is well taken: ’furd has a lot of holes to fill and the little depth they have in quality players is dominated by inexperienced players from their last 2 classes.

What's their defense look like?
I think Stanford will score because Andrew Luck is really good. But he’s not going to hang 45 on everybody this year. If their defense can protect a lead or at least help them control the clock I think Stanford is dangerous. If the defense struggles I don’t think their offense, even with Luck, can take the pressure.
by JonathanPDX on Aug 20, 2011 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions
Totally with you...and I agree
I’m just doing a cancelling-out project…
Would you rather have two allP10 lineman, or three solid lineman returning?
Would you rather have a really good receiver who is oft-injured, or 2 good receivers who aren’t oft-injured?
It’s hard to tell. I might take the two allP10 lineman returning to anchor the others; but I’d definitely take Tuinei and Huff over a lone Owusu.
TEs are a wash. Luck is better prospect, but Thomas out-played him last year and had similar stats (I know, I know, Luck is the better QB). LMJ is way better than Taylor. We also have Barner, who could easily start for Stanford. And then our incoming guys are exciting.
And seriously – I take Chip over Shaw EVERY time at this point.
We simply have more depth.
Even taking into consideration that our WR and TE depth is inexperienced, we simply have better players deeper into our bench than they do. It’s the whole “reload versus rebuild” thing. They are now where we were a few years ago, when we had a couple of excellent players backed by a sea of good players and under-the-radar “finds.” We’re at the point now where 5* players are (possibly) transferring because they don’t see how they’re ever going to get snaps.

I think that says more about the ratings system than it does our program. 5 star kids get that rating because they get interest from big name programs, and if Oklahoma wants you then you must be good, right? For every Tim Tebow there are going to be a ton of Seastrunk’s. And there are going to be even more Jeff Maehl’s.
We are recruiting at a higher level than before, but the rise of the program is also going to mean the recruiting ratings go up too. But that doesn’t neccessarily mean the actual players are drastically better than they were a few years ago. We’ll get more star guys (like Seastrunk, DAT, etc.) sure, but on average we’ll win or lose on our ability to turn a 3* guard into a starter, not how many 5 star players we can net every season.

Pollspeak has a list of the most overrated and underrated teams of the past 5 years. Cal is the most overrated team, and Oregon is the 5th most underrated team.
Here’s the explanation of how they determined these rankings:
An overrated team is one whose final poll ranking is worse than its preseason ranking. An underrated team is one whose final poll ranking is better than its preseason ranking. Different results could be obtained by tracking every week individually during the season. "Final poll" means the poll released after the bowl games.

I was always always suspicious of Williams depature
but its hard to be too critical when the “sick grandmother” reason is given. You just have to err on the side of caution. But if Lache is gone, then that kind of seals the deal in my mind.
Whether he was being beaten out or not, he would have seen the field in mop up duty this year and it’s obviously stupid to risk vacating a game (no matter how slight the chance) for mop up duty.
My parents believed in me.
Based on what we know, there’s no reason to suspect he’d be ineligible. Even if the Lyles thing goes badly, I don’t think this would affect the players’ eligibilities.

But, I can see a situation where CK says to Seastrunk: “Given the capricious nature of the NCAA and their often mind boggling decisions, coupled with the fact that it could take a long time to get resolution, I am not putting the program in jeopardy by playing you until the NCAA rules.”
I stand by my rampant speculation.

I maintain until the end of time
even if we’re guilty as hell and paid Lyles precisely for Lache’s commitment, that Lache received no extra benefit himself and therefore cannot be considered ineligible. We could be penalized back to the 70s, but it wouldn’t affect Lache’s eligibility.

Forfiet games that ineligible players
Played in. If it comes out that Lyles gave Lache something, even innocently enough, like let him borrow a car or helped out with some travel, Lache could be out and we’d forfeit games for playing our 3rd string RB in garbage time.

I'd say him transferring is a huge plus actually (in terms of any investigation)
I doubt Baylor would take him if they thought he’d be ruled ineligible.
The "Bill Simmons" of ATQ
That's incorrect.
The investigation won’t stop or change in any way if he transfers. The misdeeds, if there were any, aren’t excused by a transfer.

I believe you are correct
but not playing Lache would be out of an abundance of caution, protecting from the whims of a Fusky led organization known for its unpredictable decisions.
My parents believed in me.
Or maybe he was never as good as everyone made him out to be, and he realized he got passed by two true freshmen while there were already two juniors ahead of him. Plus he very well could have been battling for playing time against a walk on.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.
Are you saying they (if the LS rumor is true) transferred “to protect the program” of their own volition? Or that they were…“asked” to transfer? Or pressured to transfer? Pressuring a kid to transfer to attempt to avoid eligibility and sanction concerns possibly caused by one’s own actions doesn’t sound like an especially honorable thing to do IMO.

What I'm saying is that
Williams and Seastrunk, the two recruits most recently linked to Will Lyles are now gone without ever having played a down.
Is that because they were too far down in the depth chart and weren’t happy? Probably.
But I wouldn’t blame CK one bit if he refused to play them until the NCAA makes their decision. If he told them that and told them that he would accommodate a transfer request if that’s what they desired, then I wouldn’t blame him for that either.
Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.
My parents believed in me.
I think this situation is incredibly unlikely.
Also, Williams transferred far before any of this Lyles stuff came out. His eligibility would not have been in question at the time.

Maybe.
But what did #3 mean last year for Remene? Mostly mop-up work and some snaps he wouldn’t have got if KJB hadn’t had his bell rung. Remember that these top recruits want to play NOW, and not only when their team is ahead by eleventy-billion to 6.

I think there would have been a big difference between Dontae and Remene, at least I hope so. Remene didn’t get playing time because he just wasn’t very good. He had the opportunity to be the #2 back, and just didn’t have the abilities to take advantage.

I hate to say this about anyone who becomes a Duck...
But honestly, I say good riddance. He’s been nothing but a downer since he got here. He was fast in his high school tapes, but never looked like a complete football player to me.
He cried and complained all throughout the national championship, he danced around and couldn’t figure out what it means to be a running back during his red shirt year, there’s all this Lyles bullshit, and then it was reported he was being completely shown up by a true freshman in DAT.
I hate when players don’t work out here, because I want them to do well as Ducks. In fact, I LOVE when players choose our school. I’m happy for them.

I think we're at the perfect place...
Some schools take average players and turn them into gems (Boston College); others hoard 5 star talent (Texas).
I hope we keep the balance, grabbing 4 and 5 star kids when they TRULY want to come here, and also coaching up the lesser-known kids as we’ve done so well over the years.
Ha, I remember the J Stew signing. I remember how frustrated I was we weren’t starting him from day ONE.

On two of the mothership storystreams in the last two days, we’ve had claims that (1) Darron Thomas could still be suspended for his involvement in the Cliff Harris joyride, and (2) that Lache Seastrunk received a pair of Air Jordans as a part of his recruitment at Oregon.
Normally, SBN is pretty good at catching these things, so hopefully this is just a temporary blip of wrongness. In the meantime, I’ve commented on each story to the proper effect, because I can’t help myself.

Honestly, I don’t even really care about that kind of interpretable statement. Canzahno and Wliner have numbed me to it.
The shoes thing, however, is a big deal. That either demonstrably happened or it demonstrably didn’t. And not for nothing, but if it did happen, the NCAA would be nailing Chip’s sack to the wall (even moreso than they otherwise might). It would be a stunningly massive recruiting violation, and would put us squarely in the pay-for-play camp.
My point is, I don’t care if someone says we’re a dirty program. That’s not something that’s well-defined, nor can it be proven. But I care if someone says we did things that we didn’t do. That’s all.

That's a curious list, I must say.
Never would have guess the Pacific Northwest would be so well-represented.
Dallas is encouraging, seeing as I’ll be there in 2 weeks.
A bunch of Western cities, Miami...
… and Pittsburgh?
I guess they should call it...
wait for it…
wait for it…

Whoa!!!!!!! I’ll be here all night.

It's hard to pinpoint a reason.
On one hand, I think you’re right. Why wouldn’t people in places like Montreal, Stockholm, Vienna, London, and Portland sit around and have sex inside all day?
Then again, there are so many scantly clad people in warm weather cities. Not to mention, warm places tend to attract better looking people, which should only serve to entice people…in a lascivious way.
It’s weird how people often assume that the best looking people are from hot cities. In my experience, there are a ton of cities with shit weather that have ridiculously beautiful women.
There are beautiful women everywhere.
It’s just more apparent when their…attributes are there for all to see in warm weather.

Sounds like Jefferson and 3 other teammates will be facing battery charges.
Jefferson’s is a felony charge. Wow.

According to Clownzano, Jefferson provides leadership you can count on.
His possible felony charge appears to confirm this. He does his best no matter the situation.

"Someone within the Baton Rouge PD?"
Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Stone said Saturday he could not confirm the report, but said “I’m not ruling out that it’s going to happen. I can’t confirm it.”
That sounds to me like “Yeah, it’s going to happen, but we just can officially tell you yet.”

The point here is that everyone cribbed a report from a site called Sports NOLA that doesn't appear to have ever broken a story. It's an aggregation site.
And that’s leaving out the rest:
BRPD spokesman Don Stone said warrants have not been issued, but the four players have been asked to come in. #LSU. BRPD spokesman Don Stone: "They’ve been implicated and we need to talk to them and get their side of the story." #LSU
So yes, they will be at the police station on Monday.
But it sounds like part of the investigative process, not OMG ARREST ARREST ARREST.
Well...you'd think the Times-Picayune wouldn't pick up on the report and publish it if they didn't believe the source to be credible.
You’d think.

I wouldn't think.
I’ve seen this happen a lot. Just keep in mind everything that’s spread now is tracing back to one report on what seems to be a little-known site. It’s a cause for skepticism, is all I’m saying.
I agree. It's definitely not a fact at this point.

But yeah, it could happen.
Just feels like the original report took what we’ve now seen — they’re coming in to talk — and made the leap that they’ll be arrested. It certainly could happen, but there’s a process that has to unfold.

I know you haven’t been around AtQ in a while, so let me remind you how this works:
If it’s Oregon players in trouble, we wait and gather all the facts.
If it’s opponents’ players in trouble, we judge immediately and harshly, posting made up things on Twitter if at all possible.

There’s a reason the Picayune said “Oh, another website said that a source said…” The TP might not even know who the source is, and as AtVS has pointed out on Twitter, nolasports.com has been far from 100% accurate in the past.

wait....what?
(from Les Miles)
“I can tell you we’ve started disciplining our team because this was a team violation; this was not just a guy,” Miles said. “This was the team. So we ran them, we’re running them. They hear with every callup, every snap, every coaches instruction how they reacted and they played, the things they done in the last two days.”
So we yank our players from games for speeding and burglary, but if SEC players kick someone in the head, they get yelled at during drills?

'07
I was in GGB at the time, and we went down on the team charter, three days before the rest of the band, to play one battle of the bands. Three days of per diem and free hotel for a single one-hour gig. The rest were spent at Chuck-E-Jesus, capture the flag through the hotel, and at the bottom of numerous bottles of “grape soda”. Best bowl trip I ever took.
