Rose Bowl Pre Game and Early Bowl Games Open Thread

We are mere hours away from the Rose Bowl. Luckily, we get a morning of some pretty good football.

Things kick off at 9am with Houston taking on Penn State (ESPNU). Then at noon, we get Nebraska at South Carolina (ESPN), Michigan State and Georgia (ABC), and Ohio State and Florida (ESPN2).

Stick around the pass the last few hours. Talk the games, or get out any last minute panic. It's a great day to be a Duck.

Go Ducks!

Sadly I’ll be on a plane during the game but I have every confidence that my month long panic will have no impact on the game and the ducks will play well.

It's actually worse

I was supposed to fly yesterday but my wife and kid got food poisoning so we’re flying today. Flight was scheduled to land just before five EDT so of figured I’d catch the second half at least. Now we’re stuck on the ground waiting for weather in NY to clear up before we take off so our new scheduled landing time will be approximately 20+ minutes after the game ends. Which is all to say that I have a great deal of faith that this will all be made good with a win. That’s how things work, right? Right?

Just avoid all football news and watch it on ESPN3 when you get home. You will have the option to fast forward through comercials.

I think its bare in some positions...

… most certainly CB and run stopping LBs. But the young ends look really good, S is very deep and there is some beef in the middle of the line. A coach could get some pretty quick and significant improvement – especially given the stats surrendered this year.

Also, that’s not quite true that he did “nothing” to us in Tennessee. They held us to 13 points at the half. Yeah, we ended up with 48, but 14 of those weren’t given up by the defense.

Definitely. Sark has to beat the Ducks. There's no milestone of success he can achieve

that doesn’t involve going through the Ducks. Same with USC next year. Stanford minus Luck is going to be a big unknown, but certainly for Luck the last 2 years, the challenge has been to get past Oregon. Pac-12 North is going to be one of the most competitive sub-conferences in the land.

Anywhere but down? You realize that if he was successful at Texas, like you hope he is at Uw, he’d pretty much have the pick of his coaching jobs in a couple of years?

I'm more inclined to think this game depends on DT. He has a good game, we're in business.

They will stop our run game, or at least try to minimize it. DT has to be able to hit our receivers on the play-action and passing plays. And make the right choice on every, absolutely every zone read play.

Yeah

DT seems to be the key. If LMJ has a big day, we win big, but we can win if he doesn’t, as long as DT hits what is open. And Paulson converts some third and fourth downs. And it doesn’t come down to us having to hit a FG. I will die if it does down to a FG. Even if we make it, I will die first.

He ran for 253 yards. I hope we see something similar today.

Happy Rose Bowl Day!

It’s a great day to be a Duck. I love all you guys like extended family. In a few cases, the family we mostly don’t talk about. But you’re family nonetheless. It’s the motherfucking Rose Bowl! Let’s have a real good time.

Current scores and why my hate for Ohio State increases

Ohio State down 10 – 21 vs Florida (pick: Ohio State)
Houston up 30 – 14 vs Penn State (pick: Houston)
Sakerlina up 16 – 13 vs Nebraska (pick: Sakerlina)
Georgia up 16 – 0 vs MSU (pick Georgia)

Again!

For the second consecutive year the B1G is just crapping the bed against the SEC in the after-New-Years bowls. Also why are 6-6 Florida and 6-6 tOSU playing after New Years?

If you are nervous consider these goodies

Every higher ranked team has so far won or is winning their bowl game.
Today’s weather favors the smaller faster team.
DT is due for a hot start and has a ton of experience in front of massive audiences.
The big 10 is getting pushed around a lot.
GO DUCKS!

It would be the best thing ever

I feel like he’s gotten sort of jitterbug feet in some of the big games – dancing around too much for holes that don’t appear. I’m hoping he stays calm, puts his head down and RUNS HIS ASS OFF.

Good news

Every time I watch my team in a big post-season game they lose. This time, however, I have work and a boss that will allow no checking of the score and no communication regarding the game until after work at 5pm. By this logic, Oregon will win.

Go Ducks! See y’all on the other side!

Wow.

Crack kills. You should warn him. Anyone else here remember Polk ever “shredding” our defense? I remember them scoring an astounding 17 points a couple months ago, and Chip reining in the horses and playing keep-away from the mid third quarter to the end of the game. Riveting.

I have a bad feeling that our defense is going to get worked…Wisconsin is really good and balanced on offense. Great WRs, too.

"I don't do well with pain medicine."

by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Jan 2, 2012 12:37 PM PST via Android app reply actions

From the beginning I've been predicating a win on how our offense performs.

I’ve assumed ~35 points from their offense from the beginning while quietly hoping for a Fiesta Bowl-style feat of defensive derring-do from Aliotti. But in the end, I think it’s the job of the offense to finally break through in one of these big games and lay down half-a-hundred. Our advantage in the return game should help as well.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Jan 2, 2012 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

Freaking SEC.

So, say UG wins today. The SEC somehow managed to have their schedule NOT include ’bammy, LSU, or Arkansas for the second year in a row. UG comes into the season with momentum and a reasonably high ranking, plays a favorable schedule, and possibly gets to the SEC Champeenchip game undefeated against a possibly-undefeated SEC West champ. SEC thereby almost guarantees a team in the title game once again. More titles through scheduling. Huzzah.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Jan 2, 2012 12:39 PM PST reply actions

Return game will be key

Their coverage, from what I’ve read, is terrible. We should be able to exploit that. I’m actually feeling pretty good about today’s game. Everyone claiming Wiscy will just run us over really reminds me of the pre game chatter surrounding the Fiesta bowl and how Colorado was going to run all over our defense.

by kolson82 on Jan 2, 2012 12:48 PM PST reply actions

COULD be A key.

CU couldn’t throw and our CB’s were veterans that baited them into attempting to do so. This allowed Coach Al to stack the box and take away the run. Wilson is a different cat altogether. Putting our nascent DB’s up against him on an island is very, very different than doing the same against Colorado.
