Multiple Sources - Chip Kelly Finalizing Contract with NFL Tampa Bay Bucs

With only one news agency reporting and a bunch of others reporting on that news agency reporting, I'm hesitant to even give this front page real estate until we can confirm it. KGW out of Portland is currently reporting that Oregon Ducks Head Football Coach Chip Kelly is in the final stages of a contract to coach the Tampa Bay Bucs.

My advice to everyone? Relax and let's see how this plays out. We are way too early on this story and there is nothing but rumors at this point.

We'll pass along information as we can CONFIRM it.

[UPDATE] - Adam Schefter via twitter chimes in

As NBC in Portland, Ore. reported, Chip Kelly and Bucs are involved in active contract discussions. Kelly interviewed with Bucs last week.

The key to stopping our offense have always been a defense with big, strong defensive linemen and linebackers that are fast enough to seal the edges. NFL defenses have both of those.

He doesn’t exactly run an NFL offense does he? Historically speaking the fast paced spread that Oregon runs hasn’t worked well in the NFL.

I wouldn’t mind at all if it did work because if there’s something I like about you guys, it’s your offense (except Dickson… dammit).

In other words, Go Bears!

by royrules22 on Jan 22, 2012 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

He's run a different style of offense at every level he's coacched.

At New Hampshire he ran more of a pass-first look because he had a QB that could wing it. Here, we were running back deep so we ran the ball. I look at him as a leader of players, and think he can succeed.

Chip Kelly would pretty much be the first to tell you that he doesn't attach himself to any particular style of offense.

He does what he identifies to work. In the NFL he’ll probably run a much different offense and style because thinks work differently in college than the pros.

Things like that.

Petersen seems to be most people’s first choice, but I honestly don’t see him leaving Boise State, he just seems attached at the hip to that program. Most of the up-and-coming coaches were just hired by schools within the last month or so as well.

I don’t know if we have anyone on our current coaching staff that would be as good of a head coach as Kelly.

Their sweet new facilities upgrades would be obsolete in a couple years.

Their entire complex, for all their athletes, will be 142,000 sqft. Oregon’s football only complex will be 130,000, and completed next summer.

Cal is struggling to stay even in the same ballpark, and don’t have the resources to keep up, in facilities or coaching pay.

You think recruits are only looking around measuring the dimensions of a building? How about you measure a bigger area called the city of San Francisco, Berkeley and over all California weather? There isn’t too much you can do in a building but there is a whole lot you can do in the bay area.

That’s going to work with some recruits, and not with others.

hahahahaha! The thing is that you somehow assumed that I was putting Cal on top of Oregon. I was not debating who is better in any way. I also never said that area the school is in trumps facilities, you made that inference. If you read the first comment I was replying to, I was just saying that recruits also take into consideration the overall area and not just a fancy building. When I mentioned that some recruits said that Cal facilities were the best they have seen, its not because I believe this or agree with it. I don’t know that. I wanted to make the point that we at least compete with the best if some people think we have a nice place for them. We were in ruins up until now. last but not least not all our athletic sports will be housed in the new facilities. We have 29 sports programs and the new building will house 13. Other then that, I don’t hate the Ducks man. I rooted for you in the Rose Bowl.

Cal is struggling to stay even in the same ballpark

Fail. Cal’s not trying to be in the same financial ballpark as Oregon. They don’t have Uncle Phil behind them, and they know it. They’re doing the best with the resources and space that they have, and believe me, that is MORE than enough to bring up up to snuff in the Pac-12. They’re trying to best Oregon on the field, not in the resources department.

While I think Tosh was a terrible person for how he handled his departure, I think that Cal fans overreacted significantly.

He was a D-line coach, that had some real questions regarding his ability to actually coach in-game. He was a great recruiter, but that means nothing if it doesn’t add up on the field, and that hadn’t really been happening.I just don’t think that this class would have pushed Cal “over the edge.”

I personally overreacted? While my response probably came off as a bit snippy, I really do think that no fanbase should pin all their hopes on a single recruiting class, and when you do that, it’s a really bad sign. Recruiting is a number games. While this would have given Cal a bump, no doubt, they’d have to make significant strides on the field, which those recruits alone wouldn’t do.

Anyway, I think Cal will move on and be fine, though the biggest problems you guys face is the resources at your disposal.

I see, I see.. I guess i didn’t see it as huge a thing as some people did because I don’t follow recruiting that much. I’d agree that no one recruiting class is going to make or break a program, but I guess some people did see it that way.

Nuts and bolts of it is this: Yes, losing a head coach is definitely worse that losing an position coach. It’s a question of the coaching position, yes, but not the success or popularity of the program – those are moot.

Moot?

One team is about to discover if decades of toil and treasure has resulted in a program with enough inertia to remain a perennial top-10 program even losing its wildly popular head coach. The other is a middle-of-the-road Pac-12 team trying to get to that level, which just lost a d-line coach. Huge difference.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Jan 22, 2012 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

a) “perennial” is a strong word.

b) You’re missing the point. Middle Tennessee State losing their head coach is a bigger blow than LSU losing a line coach. Doesn’t matter what team you’re talking about. Losing a head coach is more painful than losing a position coach, no matter which teams you’re talking about. So no, the relative success of the teams are not germane to the discussion.

Why not?

He didn’t start with the spread offense. That wasn’t the first thing he did.

Put it another way: they don’t have the right people to play spread at Tampa. Trying to do it would be like trying to make tebow play pro-style. It’s an auto-failure and a waste of time. He could get those people in a few years, but he doesn’t have that much time. So he’s going to have to do things differently simply because of necessity.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

freeman has shown he can throw

tebow cannot. also tampa is years from being good, why not do something risky to gain attention? their shitty anyways, might as well rebuild to something that has shown it can work in the NFL at least a little, and bring in one of the best spread offense guys in the country

by jcgoducks on Jan 22, 2012 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

Why not do something risky to gain attention

What attention do you need? It’s not like he’s going to get more recruits if he has a flashy offense or something, or get more free agents. That’s stupid.

Kelly doesn’t have a couple years to do anything. If he doesn’t improve at least a decent amount next year he’s probably out in two. This isn’t like college where coaches are given 5 year timelines; you get 3 if you’re lucky and usually two at most.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

attention market in the nfl

sell tickets, sell merchandise, rebranding effort, people tune in, free agents, a market ineffeciency with players who played in the spread and need to run the same concepts in the NFL?

by jcgoducks on Jan 22, 2012 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Free agents don't care

the notion that free agents would come to your team if you’re splashy or fun is ludicrous. They come to win, or they come for the money.

People will tune in if Tampa’s winning. They’ll not if they aren’t. Losing spectacularly is still losing in the NFL, and that’s ultimately what the fans and the owners care about.

Seriously, do you really believe that the fans are all atwitter that their team is losing 45-31 instead of 28-17? They’re still not going to show up.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

Free agents who fit the system

Are out of a job. They care because they could get a job. It’s not like Kelly would have to do anything to get them anyway; they aren’t working or won’t be working.

yes, a lot of NFL fans are talking about Tampa RIGHT NOW. Which means by your logic the best bet is to hire and fire coaches every month. That’s really stupid.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Because he can get him in the second?

Tampa bay has what, a 5th overall pick? Why take LMJ then? Tampa has ridiculous holes all over the place; their QB is bad, their line isn’t great, their Dline isn’t great, their secondary is poor. You never pick someone high when you don’t need to, regardless of whether you think he’s good. That’s just stupid.

Would any coach make anyone feel at least a little better?

Belotti coming back would be at least emotionally comforting. Maybe he can hire a new stud OC to take over in a few more years… (lol)

Peterson would be fun to steal from Boise, but he’d feel a little dirty… Like the girlfriend who slept with your worst enemy before showing interest in you.

Fuck no one will be as good…

Belotti coming back would be at least emotionally comforting.

That actually is the exact rationale I was going with. It’d be pretty much like moving back in with your parents after living out with your friends for a few years. One the one hand, embarrassing and undoubtedly feeling like you’ve failed and regressed. On the other hand, you’d be with someone who loves you and who you know is a great housemate, and is very familiar.

Things like that.

The problem is that on our staff, we have lots of great, experienced assistants, but no head coaching prospects (besides Frost, but he’s too young and inexperienced). I like Helfrich, just not sure what we’ll get with him at the helm.

Different situation

Chip Kelly was THE playcaller as the OC. I’m not sure how much Helfrich has played into the mix here. But, I can’t say I would be really disappointed if we went with him. He’s had a good track record developing quarterbacks, that’s for sure.

He has connections everywhere and he loves these kids. He will do what he can to insure they are not left hung out to dry. I would not be suprised if he suggests some off the wall replacement that we all scoff at, only to find out he is exactly what we needed. I wish Chip the best of luck.

It is the end of an era

Not just any era. Chip Kelly brought us out from our wallflower chair and took us to the dance floor. Chip Kelly was our first blush with all that was exciting, thrilling, the things in life that make your heart pound and your blood race. Chip Kelly was a first love, and probably only love, the love of your life who gets away.

Chip Kelly didn’t have the best tools to work with, but his imagination and creativity and football intelligence saw us hew new paths out of the football forest, out into the plains where the sun shines and roses litter the ground. We did change the football world. We were a blur to the rest of the football world and it wasn’t just our buildings and our uniforms that got talked about, that got emulated across the football world. Big-shot talking heads like Jon Gruden praised us for being innovative, and we liked it. It was respect, it was arrival, and it was balm after the previous 95 years of suckage.

That brilliant trajectory into the BCS playground from his first season on was meteor-like and short, impossibly short, and I know I will not see its like again.

Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!

Stanford’s success is so much more tenuous than ours. Not only do they have the limitations of their academic requirements but they were horrible 5 years ago.

I feel we are much better set up structurally for long-term success than Stanford.

by eloomis20 on Jan 22, 2012 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting comparison

both brought somewhat successful programs into the national spotlight. But Stanford had a much easier transition, and it’s not like the pro-style offense was hard to adapt to. I think the problem is that Kelly’s got quite the brain. Lots of our victories over the past three years were due to his scheme and mindset, especially as he wasn’t working with top athletes.

You don't get to have as much success as Gary Patterson has had without being able to adapt and identify your strengths.

Oregon doesn’t have a great history with a really hard-hitting defense; that’s not been the feel for quite some time. It’s possible, but doubtful. I also suspect the big-12 money would be pretty hard for Patterson to leave.

When Chip Kelly stepped in we knew he was awesome and had been the orchestrator of the whole offense for two years.

Helfrich comes from a similar situation in being the offensive coordinator, but he was decidedly not the offensive mind in the past three years. That was Chip Kelly’s offense. That’s the difference.

MB's house was cleaned out for him.

Greatwood and Allioti went with Brooks to St Louis.

CK didn’t have to clean house.

No reason to think an internal hire would “clean house”, unless there’s a lot more dissension in the coaching ranks at Oregon than I think there is. Some, maybe Campbell, might decide it’s time to retire, but I can’t see Helfrich being promoted and shitcanning people.

If he's going to leave for another college job, this is the one he'll leave for.

If he stays, he’s there for the long haul. He coached here for 5 years (leading eventually to the Boise gig), he’ll get pritnear any paycheck he wants, he’ll have a roster absolutely loaded with the kind of players he can’t get at Boise, etc.

Sigh

This is very disappointing, but I guess it’s somewhat inevitable. I really wanted a few more years.

It’s very bad timing for the program and for recruiting, and seems shortsighted given that the Bucs are not a particularly well-run team on any level and do not have any particularly good players. It’s not even a great fanbase, and it’s in possibly the most competitive division in the NFL right now.

I guess…if Kelly really wants to go somewhere where he gets more money and deals with less shit that badly, so be it. It’s a shame.

As a Duck fan I’ve never been in this situation before; we’ve always had a very clear understanding of who our coach was going to be and what was going to happen. Rich Brooks leaving was about the closest that this comes, but that was handled a lot more smoothly and Bellotti was clearly the next thing. This is very weird.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Tampa has a lot of talent. Their roster is not that bad, but the team was very undisciplined and had some holes to fill this year. They have a big QB who is also mobile, and their D-line has a lot of potential. They also have the #5 pick, which allows for quite a bit of flexibility in shifting the team to fit the new scheme.

by JonathanPDX on Jan 22, 2012 8:13 PM PST up reply actions

And he disappeared this year.

As did Freeman, to be honest. Freeman looked horrible this year, and this year was super friendly to QBs.

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

They had a bad year, but there are plenty of young guys on that roster who have a ton of potential if they have the right coach and avoid major injury. They’re also mostly young. My point is that Chip might be thinking that if he coaches them up right and drafts / trades wisely, that team could improve greatly next year.

by JonathanPDX on Jan 22, 2012 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Sure

That’s the best way to sell it.

I just think it happens to be wrong; that Tampa got lucky last year, regressed to the mean this year and is talent-poor. especially at the skill positions and OLine.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Maybe

At the same time, most college coaches only get one shot in the NFL; if it ends in failure they go back. It’s rare to see someone like Carroll happen.

And unless he’s getting a lot of control in the personnel – someting that first-time college coaches almost never get – the roster change really isn’t in his control there (or anywhere in the NFL).

Kelly’s not being bought for his spread offense; that’s a very simple offense. He’s being brought to coach the team. That means most likely not installing something insanely different or bizarre to the NFL, at least not yet.

I will say that if he tries with the talent that he has at Tampa he’s going to fail so very, very badly.

I don't think it's about the money

Isn’t it about the challenge? As much as I love Oregon, the NFL is….well, the NFL.

by uojones on Jan 22, 2012 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

It's absolutely about the money

Chip Kelly would make easily twice what he’s making now before incentives in the NFL. And afterwards he’d be set to go almost anywhere he wants.

It may not be JUST about the money, but let’s not kid ourselves – it’s certainly about money.

Truly horrible.

I will say thsi for Bellotti – our offseasons were never so horrible with him.

Eh

I’m not super sold on Dungy as a coach. Though it’d certainly be splashy.

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

Not exactly

Just not a coach with a real killer instinct. He’s smart as hell, he’s nice, but when push comes to shove he doesn’t seem to want to really drive that final nail in. It’s telling that Gruden came in with Dungy’s system and Dungy’s players and won a superbowl. Or hell, Jim Caldwell did…nothing and got the Colts to the superbowl.

He's a nice guy. Proof:

The first day of fall ball, I tripped on a curb and fell into some bushes. A guy stopped his bike and helped me up, made sure I was OK…then I realized who’s hand I was shaking.

Our defense would be dominant.

I’d welcome a cover 2, with the athletes we have been attracting. He would also entire NFL level defensive talent like one Arik Armstead.

cause I didn’t remember that being super dominant.

You don't remember his defensive lines in Indy?

Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis? They were great when Bob Sanders was healthy. How about in Tampa Bay with Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice & Derrick Brooks?

"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil

by 420Phenom on Jan 22, 2012 8:41 PM PST up reply actions

Tampa was fine

Indy was crap. Consistently at the bottom of any ranking you care to look at for rushing and passing defenses. Freeney and Mathis were good when rushing the passer, but otherwise were horrible. And Sanders was at best good for that defense.

At this point I’d trust Aliotti over Dungy.
