Chip Kelly overflow thread

The last thread is getting slow, so here is a fresh new one. The longer the night goes on, the more it looks like this is going to happen, barring some last minute change of heart.

I blame Rob Moseley for going on vacation.

I don't know what to say tonight, other than best wishes to Chip and we need to find someone soon, but I'm sure we'll have a bunch as the head coaching situation continues to unfold.

I am excited about Leach. But right now I wish he was coming Oregon.

and maybe the program a little too.
If they hire an outsider, he might as well take them – at least then they’ll have jobs.
If they hire an insider they will likely stay intact.

is Carroll is pretty brual on ex-USC players. Cut former first round pick Lawrence Jackson right away.

Has signed a ton of competing Pac-10 players he coached against.

he's a consistent starter in Detroit now

used him as the example since he was such a high draft pick. But its happened a bunch. Seahawks are now loaded with Cal, OSU, UO, Stanford players that Petey coached against… but very few USC guys. Passed on Leinhart several times even though he desperately needs a QB. Cut Lendale White after trading for him first day of training camp.

Good luck, Chip

This feels weird because it feels like the end of an unfinished era. Oh, not because we didn’t win the National Championship — but because Oregon was becoming synonymous with “Win the Day.” Chip was seriously working some John Wooden shit here, and I thought he would be around a lot longer to further ingrain this philosophy into the football program.

What really bums me out is not the moving on — because seriously, fuck anyone who begrudges Chip for leaving for another challenge…at least he didn’t do this AFTER signing day — but what happens if we hire out of house? Does the new coach — understandably — tear down the Win the Day stuff so they can implement their own philosophies? That bums me out.

Another bummer is the prospect of Greatwood leaving. Again, good for him…he totally deserves it. But I was REALLY hoping we would promote him to HC. I hope we hire from within, but if we do hire out of house, please please please DO NOT hire Chris Peterson.

There’s already a Chip 2.0 out there, and he resides in Fort Worth, TX. Make it happen, Phil.

Proven NFL experience, who is a defensive specialist.

He ill attract high level defensive players, had experience playing with some of the best 4-3 scheme defensive lineman in the last 20 years. Aside from recently with Haloti Ngata/Jairus Byrd/Patrick Chung, we haven’t been able to lure the greats on that side of the ball like an Alabama/USC can(Both who are doing this with failed NFL coaches- Though Monte Kiffin just commands respect)

If you could get him to sign a long term contract(I’d assume thats what he would go with if he does want to coach at this level, with an option to leave after his son Eric is done. Consider the speculation of potential future NCAA sanctions, who else would be better to make it through a tough period like that other then Dungy? He is an honest man with good morals & a personality that lights up a room. He brought Mike Vick into the light, nuff said.

Because Dungy doesn't want it

Dungy’s son killed himself. Shortly after, Tony Dungy quit coaching to spend more time with family.

That’s not going to change. And he’s too honorable to want to coach his own son and deal with that nepotism.

If anything changes with Dungy, it’d be following Chip to the NFL and being a coordinator or advisor.

is FU Chip Kelly. Thanks for everything (really), but also, no thanks for leaving us in a lurch so close to LOI day. I’m guessing not many established coaches will be willing to torpedo their own classes to come to UO. Chip, it had better be a damned good deal with LOTS of guaranteed dough.

It'll be interesting to see what the coaching search looks like.

I have a sour taste left in my mouth from the basketball search — nothing against Altman, but there was so much fanfare about whom the Ducks were pursuing and then it kind of fizzled. Hopefully the football job is as plum as we collectively seem to think it is.

I honestly don’t know what made Belichick BELICHICK. Did he put up with BS in his first coaching gig(s)? If Kelly gets full support from management to set a hard line for that kind of crap, I think he’ll be successful. But he’s going to need something like three or four years of absolute commitment, otherwise he may get the axe prematurely.

I don’t blame the man – he’s being offered more money and more prestige with less red tape. So I don’t wish Chip ill if he takes the job. I don’t think I’ll particularly root for him, simply because he’s not an Oregon alum and he wasn’t with the team for long enough. It should make the NFL more interesting though.

It really, really sucks.

But the facilities are awesome, Phil is unlikely to stop funding the program, and Oregon is universally perceived as a cool place to go play football. Hopefully the football program is bigger than one person.

"How did we get out of the suffering?" Great question

A combination of patience, the 85-scholarship limit, a massive influx of television money into CFB after the NCAA cartel was busted in 1984, a gradual upgrade of facilities, an increase in the player pool over a generation (athletes who used to play baseball now play football), and hiring the right people at the right times, like Bill Byrne and many of the assistants who are still on staff. That’s my best drunken suffering explanation.

We did not get out of the Suffering first by hiring Brooks — the depths of the suffering occurred on his watch and with his players (1981-3).

I have given this some thought...

at first I was pretty mad. Chip just won a Rose Bowl. He finally had “his” guys. But now I feel a little better. I think Chip Kelly was contemplating the NFL this whole offseason. I also think he wanted DT at the UO not only to get better, but to be that senior to kind of steady the boat, make sure people dont flip the freak out. And I’m sure he wants someone to be hired in house so the whole program isnt changed. Chip has a great opportunity to go to the NFL with a lot of say in personnel matters (something Pete Carrol loved about the Seahawks job). But he probably wants to make sure the football team doesnt crash and burn by his leaving. I really want Scott Frost to be head coach for this reason, and because I dont really think Helfirch has “it”

This is just all speculation though. It just makes sense to me.

by daisyduck on Jan 22, 2012 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

I'm with ya, Daisy

Frost is a wild card. I think we know what we’re getting with Helf. Especially since I remember reading an article during the season where a lot of the playcalls in the second half were Helf’s calls. DT said Helf had more to do with the in-game strategy than Chip did. I assumed that’s just because he was in the booth and could converse with Chip about what he’s seeing, but I think he definitely has a solid grip on the Chip Kelly offense.

"Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do" -- John Wooden

by kolson82 on Jan 22, 2012 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

Helfrich was a weird hire. He’d come off some pretty unsuccessful seasons at Colorado, and I think that’s what people remember. Also, that we have ZERO idea of what exactly he’s done at Oregon. Everyone just assumes that Kelly had control of the offense and Helfrich was just a sycophant that Kelly kept around to answer the phones. Maybe make a recruiting visit.

Meanwhile, Frost has been rumored for all sorts of positions around the country. He’s young. He’s popular. And he’s hot. yeah, I said it.

by Gorbachav5 on Jan 22, 2012 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

Although Helfrich ran some great offenses at ASU and works with one here, his time at Colorado was disappointing and all he does here is coach QBs.

by CaDuck on Jan 22, 2012 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

I wish I could find that article...

but DT had some pretty nice things to say about coach Helf beyond just the usual, “he’s my position coach and I respect him” stuff. I think he flourished under Kelly and maybe learned the nuances of how to execute an offensive gameplan. He could be a crucial element to keeping things consistent.

That's what they thought about the basketball coach.

We are not the destination job that some of us think we are.

Basketball’s of secondary importance. We’ve had far less recent success, the program is much lower profile, and the conference is farther from the bright center of the sporting universe. Chip’s made Oregon a destination for football right now. If his replacement has a bunch of 8-4 seasons or worse, then that will change.

Our expectations were low for basketball. We had a huge amount of money and a beautiful new arena.

Almost any coach could have come in and improved the program without much effort.

In football, Chip is leaving some huge shoes to fill.

Maintaining the same level of winning will be much harder.

Not for the new coach that has to come in.

Unless there is some major underlying problem (which basketball did not have), it’s easier to turn around a program that’s had poor leadership than it is to follow an extremely successful coach.

Chip was the best and brightest coach in the country. When you hitch your wagon to someone like that it’s likely to be a short ride. Amazing, lots of fun, but short. We were lucky to simply be in the position to fend off all potential college poachers.

In House v. Outside is going to be a huge question.

If it’s in house, you have a lot of continuity, and the immediate future seems pretty stable. Outside, and suddenly a bunch of coaches who’ve put in decades at the school are out on the street and everyone’s starting over in the learning process. It was mentioned earlier that UO hasn’t gone outside for a coach since the 70’s. There were only two transitions between then and now, both times with the OC moving into the big chair.

Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.

by omb on Jan 22, 2012 11:42 PM PST up reply actions

We were not a top tier program at that time either. Coaching expectations are a lot different when you are fighting for the Sun Bowl. Not just anybody can go into a star player’s house and convince him to move 2,000 miles despite the traditional power down the street also offering the kid a starting position.

I’m not saying the guys in Eugene cannot step up and continue things as they are going, but I don’t think you can really compare this to previous coaching moves. What we need out of the head guy is a lot different after winning 3 straight conference titles and a Rose Bowl. Coaches like Patterson or Petersen may change the system and staff, but may also have the experience to run the program at a high level.

by JonathanPDX on Jan 22, 2012 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Some fairly meh thoughts

recent history of great coaches leaving a program have not been particularly good, even when that team has a surplus of talent.

OSU losing Tressel resulted in that team having 7 losses for the first time in over 100 years.
Florida losing Meyer resulted in a 6-6 record, IIRC.
Saban leaving LSU resulted in LSU having an 8-4 record (they won the championship in a few years though).

Point being that regardless of the talent level at Oregon, a disruption of this magnitude is almost certainly going to result in a fairly meh year, at least by comparison to what we were expecting. You can reasonably expect to not win the P12N this year, for instance, and it’s possible that the streak against UW will be gone this year simply because of the turnaround (that’s what happened with OSU and Michigan, for example).

These are also usually big hits on recruitings; you can expect a few high-value and big name recruits to go to another school, even if they have to sit.

Depending on the system change, a lot of kids might not work out. If we don’t run the Kelly spread offense, for instance, players like Mariota look significantly worse. Linemen aren’t going to be quite so interesting.

Now, for the good news:
I suspect strongly that we will have hired a coach with spread offense history or a coach willing to continue the spread (like Bellotti was willing to with Crowton) – the high-octane offense and talent we have implies this too much. It’s also very much what people identify the Ducks with, and that branding is important too.
I suspect strongly that we will get a big name hire as head coach. Perhaps not Petersen, but someone in that caliber.
I suspect that next year will not be great but won’t be horrifyingly bad.

And if not, well, it’s been a hell of a ride. I got to see the Ducks play in the national championship game in football live and come within seconds of winning it. I got to finally see the Ducks win a Rose bowl. It’s quite wonderful, and I’ll cherish it no matter what else happens.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 22, 2012 11:58 PM PST reply actions

Context is important.

It’s not only that they left the program, but the state they left the program in. Florida losing QB Jesus and a host of other talent plus some NCAA sniffing around, Tressel leaving a mess, etc. Chip leaves a full cupboard and likely quite a bit of continuity with coordinators and position coaches. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Ducks GOOOOD. Fuskies BAAAAAD.

by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Jan 23, 2012 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

Florida had a ton of talent though

Florida was super loaded for talent. Not at QB (mostly because Cam Newton left) but almost everywhere else, especially at defense. OSU was a mess, but the talent they had was ridiculous (and Fickell was an in-house successor). Chip leaves something of a full cupboard but at the same time we’ve lost a 3-year RB star and the best RB in the history of Oregon (and one of the best in the nation, ever), a 2-year QB starter with a record of 22-3, a number of defensive players and a couple other linemen. It’s not entirely stocked.

And more importantly it’s not necessarily stocked with the kind of players that people want. Michigan had ridiculous talent when RichRod came onboard but they were horrible for the spread and the offense sucked for a while.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 23, 2012 12:14 AM PST up reply actions

In retrospect,

I remember a lot of folks thought the “Aliotti to AD, Chip to HC” charade was done to keep Chip from bolting back East or to a HC job after his offense had dazzled people. To lock him up for Mike’s eventual retirement that we thought was still a few years away. I guess it was just postponing the inevitable.

I do happen to love ignorant comments like this tho
Kelly also has a reputation as a disciplinarian

What reputation? The only reputation he has is: If you are a star player, you don’t get in trouble. But if you are a backup you get kicked off the team!!!

That’s from lear pilot over at UDP, in case you were wondering about the ignorance.

yes, because Masoli and Harris were backups, and Blount was a backup too.

Seriously, what other teams do you see suspending or kicking off all-american players and two-year starting QBs? Sigh. That’s something I don’t get; I do see how Kelly wasn’t hugely great at making sure the kids didn’t get in trouble, but I don’t see at all how Kelly didn’t discipline them after they did get in trouble.

This is the sort of shit that I would imagine would make him want to leave.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

♥♥♥♥ YANNI ♥♥♥♥

by Big Boutros on Jan 23, 2012 12:12 AM PST reply actions

It's really unclear what Helfrich has actually done

he might be great or he might suck, but being the OC of Oregon is like being the DC of USC (like Nick Holt was) – how good he is is very unclear and the implication was that Kelly was calling most of the shots.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 23, 2012 12:14 AM PST up reply actions

It’s weird, though, because I always hear the counterpoint. Every time someone says Oregon’s offense belongs to Chip Kelly alone someone at Sporting News or SI or somewhere is quick to credit Helfrich.

Obviously if the Oregon community doesn’t even know how much influence he really has then a promotion would be super risky.

University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly told a highly placed UO source late Sunday night that he has reversed course and decided to turn down an offer from the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. "It’s done," the source said.

An hour later, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: "I’m staying."

Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn’t certain what he would do.

How long was the phone call from Uncle Phil?

Either he was messing with clownzano, which I love that theory, the source was bogus from the start and was trying to put kgw on the map, or he got that phone call from the swooshed one who said your wish be your comand. Can’t wait to get a copy of the Oregonian tomorrow to have clownzano’s egg in the face in print. BFT ought to be worth a listen to hear him stand behind his words about Kelly being a product of “the system”.
