Arik Armstead Picks Oregon
Huge, HUGE pickup for the Oregon Ducks today. Arik Armstead, the elite two-way lineman from Sacramento, has chosen to play his football in Eugene. Armstead is the #1 rated prospect in the entire country by Scout.com, and regarded as one of the best lineman in the country by most other scouting services.
Chip Kelly deserves a lot of credit for getting Armstead to sign with Oregon. A week ago it seemed like the Oregon recruiting class was in serious jeopardy, as Chip flirted with the NFL and linebacker Jeremy Castro switched his commitment to UCLA. But Chip stayed, and now he's nabbed one of the best recruits in Oregon Ducks history. Said Armstead, "He was honest with me. They never talked bad about any other program. They recruited me without recruiting me." Awesome.
Armstead plans to enroll in school in March, and will compete for playing time right away. He will also play basketball for coach Dana Altman.
Rejoice, Ducks fans. This gives Oregon great momentum heading into signing day.

WOW! What a great pickup.
Now, let’s grab #QuackThompson and Win The Day!
STATEMENT! STATEMENT! STATEMENT!
Been gone this weekend,
did a Say Yes to the Dress with my niece and spent the night at my best friends house. This is fricking awesome!
By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!
Best thing I've heard in a while!
Lets get Shaq too!
Ducks winning at everything this weekend
(Except WBB)
The Oregon Duck even beat the OSU Beaver in BOTH in-game promotions at Civil War night Friday at the Blazer game.

And Basketball?
So how does that work? Does Football trump Basketball? Does he just miss the non-conference in Basketball?
"What the hell was that?"
"Spaceball One, they've gone to plaid!"
all I know is that's one big dude playing basketball.
it kind of worries me tho cuz it puts even more stress on his knees. I dont want him tearing any ACLs

Who cares.
He chose us because we were going to let him play basketball, imo. Not to mention how well our BBall program is going with Altman this year. If anything the extra conditioning will help him.

Has anyone considered
the real-life (friendly) confrontations with Safarian-Jenkins(sp) in both football and basketball? One plays offense in football, the other, defense. Both will play something other than a point guard on the court.

Armstead will ruin Jenkins.
Both on the court & the field.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
so if we pick up shaq (which is still a big if) do you think he would immediately start and take over pleasants spot?
No
Unless he’s stupidly talented AND can pick up the system quickly (and it’s a fairly complicated system) he won’t be the primary starter. It’s very rare for Oregon to start true freshmen. Even LMJ wasn’t a true freshman.
But he’ll certainly get some reps.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
Top-5 overall recruit.
He probably fits the description of “stupidly talented.” They’ll start the player who gives them the best chance to win. If it’s Shaq, so be it. If it’s someone else, so be it.
"Screw them all" said Coach Chip Kelly, "trololololol lolol lol lol!
by BigGreenWreckingMachine on Jan 29, 2012 5:06 PM PST up reply actions
The 'and picks up the system' is also important
DAT wouldn’t have touched the field if he wasn’t understanding the playbook and the timing as well as he did.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
Kelly took him under his wing as a WR/HB hybrid
despite the prized Lache Seastrunk being on the team.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
He did so because he was so crazy good
As Kelly said repeatedly DAT essentially forced his way onto the field, and only got more and more roles as he played. And that was a lot to do with his talent but even more to do with his ability to get the plays down and practice well. Lache had talent aplenty but never seemed to get it as far as the playbook.
Don’t discount the mental aspect, especially with the biggest stars; a lot of them have a hard time sitting and learning when so much of their success came from them simply being stronger and faster than every human being they faced.
I don’t know if that’s the case with Shaq – but I am saying simply that having someone come in their first year and play is pretty rare. Redshirting is almost always more desired. LMJ redshirted, for crying out loud.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
unusual but not unheard of - by my quick count 5 this year
colt, Ifo, DAT, Fisher, Wallace… another LB too, right? I was surprised on of the WRs didn’t make the list
scrappy
by Honka Playboy on Jan 29, 2012 7:56 PM PST up reply actions
The player that gives the team the best chance of winning would have a grasp of the system.
It’s the reason Cliff, while obviously the most talented CB on the team, didn’t start until midway through 2010. Whether it was that he didn’t “grasp the system” or simply didn’t adhere to it, he had to “conform” to what the defense was doing, as Coach Al said.
"Screw them all" said Coach Chip Kelly, "trololololol lolol lol lol!

I think so.
It’s very rare for Oregon to start true freshmen
That holds true for basically every college. Keep in mind, we have also never had players freshman as talented as a Arik Armstead, Shaq Thompson or De’Anthony Thomas.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Maybe not start
But definitely he would see the field. Too talented to red shirt most likely. And a season of on the field learning from Boyett would be great for his development.
after talking with some people very close to the program
it’s not too hard to pick up and play right away
He would compete for time
Would be abig get. Have to say- safety with Chung, Ward, Pleasant all being NFL guys… With the young talent at the other db spots. With the pass rush we are putting together. With our high flying offense forcing the opponent to throw early and often. Damn does this seem like a great fir for him.

I am glad he’s going Oregon instead Washington, though. I would love to see Tosh and the UW staff strike out on every single one of the high-profile recruits they’ve been trying to poach from other Pac-12 programs.

I don't see how any other approach would be preferable.
This is, in my mind, how all recruiting visits should go. “Here’s our scheme, here’s where you fit into the big picture, if that’s not your thing, no biggie”. The whole conference room with all 7 washington coaches just felt overzealous and doomed to fail from the start.

How about these guys coming in; just look and the heights and weights: And, there's more on the way!!!!
Arik Armstead - 6-8/285 - One of the best OT prospects we’ve seen in a while. Still very good at DL – the position he wants to play – but how good will he be? Definitely not the no-brainer that he would be as an OT.
Pharoah Brown - 6-6/230 – Played QB in high school. Could be a tight end, could be a DE. How physical is he? Phenomenal athlete.
DeForest Buckner – 6-7/240 – Another 6-7 DL prospect that can add a ton of good weight and polish up his game.
Cody Carriger – 6-7/230 – A 6-7 DE. But the kid played HS ball in MONTANA. Let’s be honest, no one truly knows how good this kid is. Probably not even the Oregon coaches. But he’s a 6-7 athlete that can move and could be a beast.
TJ Daniel - 6-7/240 – Yet another 6-7 athlete that somehow missed the major national radar but if you watch his film he’s got a chance to be a matchup nightmare.

Yep, I'm really looking fwd to our defense this year.
Still feel the areas of concern are:
- Kicker – we had better not leave it to the kicker. It just just better NOT come down to a FG, please god.
- Wide Receiver – somebody step up, step, please god.
- Corner Depth
- OLine
Somebody say something reassuring about the above, because I’m probably gonna start my PANIC early on those fronts…

Hmmmm
can’t say anything about kicker. Maybe Beard gets his leg healthy and give us that 35-45 yd range? (plus touchbacks on kickoffs)
I doubt that Blackmon, Sumler, and Kelley were just twiddling their thumbs during their RS year. I think at least one of them steps up big time. Also, Huff could get better.
Dunno much about corner depth. Mitchell’s obviously our star corner now, but Ifo and Troy Hill have yet to step up. Past those 3, you’re right. Depth looks bad.
Most of our OLine were pretty young this year, with only Asper and York returning as bona fide starters, although Weems had seen a lot of action. Experience, plus Andre Y and a healthy Heimuli, should put your fears to bed.

Dear Arik Armstead,
Welcome to Oregon! We’re really, really glad you chose to come here for your college and footbal career. Trust in your coaching staff, learn from your fellow team members, work hard, and have fun. Autzen is a fantastic place to play, and you’ll never forget that experience.
Chip Kelly is a terrific head coach, probably one of the smartest football people you’ll have the priviledge of playing for, whether it’s college or the NFL. The Ducks football team has great chemistry, and we’re hoping you help them raise their level even further.
The Duck fans are on a high after having won the Rose Bowl for the first time in 95 years, but the last two years have been a tragic so-close, so-close, so-close agony. So we still have a lot of pent-up desire to win. We have very high ambitions. We will not reach them unless every player on the team works their butt off and feels the same level of desire and intensity to win.
You’ll need to focus. You’ll need to fight for playing time. You’ll need to show just how talented you are, how ferocious your desire to play, every chance you get. If you do it right, you’ll have the best years of your life. There is nothing like smelling sweet success at the Rose Bowl, the grand-daddy of them all. There is nothing like playing in a National Championship. Feel our hunger for it. We’ll be cheering for you.
Go win the day.
