Quack Fix: Rose Bowl Champion Edition

PASADENA, CA - JANUARY 02: Wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei #80 of the Oregon Ducks holds up the trophy as the Ducks celebrate their 45-38 victory against the Wisconsin Badgers at the 98th Rose Bowl Game on January 2, 2012 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Still can't believe the Ducks are Rose Bowl champions. Last night's game was incredible, with a bunch of standout individual performances. As such, there is a ton of quack out there this morning. I have picked out some of my favorites that I have found this morning. Please feel free to share any that you found in the comments below.

I'm sure that everyone will have lots of other quack to share, so leave it in the comments. Rose Bowl Champs! Go Ducks!

I had a dream last night

that after I went to bed the refs called the teams back onto the field at midnight, told them they made an error, that the spike came with 1 sec on the clock. They had to play a last play, Wisc completed a bomb into the end zone, converted a 2pter and we lost.
I actually woke up and checked the news just to make sure and was glad to see that we are indeed the Rose Bowl Champs

The Miller interviews with players (and coach) were incredible

Kelly keeps them amazingly even-keeled, even in crazy exciting wins.

I'll tell y'all what won the game.

NA’s defense.

Wisconsin’s 4th quarter: four possessions, zero points. After the way the game started, would anyone have suspected that as a possibility?

Oh, and the new unis were AWESOME. Suck it, haters.

The "Beano Cook" of ATQ

by benzduck on Jan 3, 2012 7:50 AM PST via mobile reply actions

The team remembered how to tackle after the first couple drives, and it all went from there. I really can’t give enough praise to the defense. They fought their asses, and for the most part executed the game plan they needed to.

The Ducks surrendered a lot of yards, and only 31 points (at least the defense did), but that was against IMO the best and most well-rounded offense the Ducks have faced in the Chip Kelly era. Wisconsin had no weaknesses. They could run and pass, and Oregon shut them down in the 4th.

And yes, the new uniforms are freaking spectacular. My favorite touch is the numbers.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Jan 3, 2012 7:56 AM PST up reply actions

I watched TV highlights, and they don't do the numbers justice at all.

They are amazing in person. My favorite part of the new unis. And I’m sorry for doubting the helmets. I honestly thought they were going to look stupid, and I was dead wrong. The best part of the helmets is how they changed once the sun went down. The first half it was all mirrors and shiny. When the lights came on, the wings came out.

It was a perfect game to debut them because the Rose Bowl’s change in lighting is so iconic. And the helmets fit it so well.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Jan 3, 2012 8:13 AM PST up reply actions

agreed. it was awesome.

i first noticed early on that i would see the clear blue sky on the top of the helmet and as the sun began setting i could watch the change in color on the helmets and the wings start to appear like a hologram.

“awesome”, is what i believe Belotti would call them, “simply awesome”

"Catchphrase! "

by Quacker Backer on Jan 3, 2012 10:09 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, they looked a lot better with darker lighting

I still don’t htink they matched the green all that well (a yellow/black combo would have worked better IMO) but I thought they were pretty good.

Still would have liked the O on the side.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Yeah, & 10 points total in the whole second half. I think I said it in the thread when we were in caps lock mode but Kiko finally played the way that had a lot of you excited in fall camp.

As for the unis I wonder how permanent they are? The helmets are awesome

Here's my take on kickers (not that you asked for it)

Football is a team sport, so to say that it is the kicker’s fault that he has to be in a position to win the game with one kick is wrong…HOWEVER, that kicker has one job. Just as it is Tim Tebow’s the Quarterback’s job to make good throws to complete passes, the kicker must make the kicks they have in front of them. No excuses.

1. Keep Cliffy in California, no driving on I-5 between Portland and Eugene
2. Someone needs to tattoo Kiko’s address on his arm so he always knows what house to go to.
3. Someone needs to hack into the AD’s computers and delete all records request that come in from the Oregonian, Yahoo sports, or the RG.
4. No Facebook accounts for any of the players. Google+ is ok, no one reads that anyway.
5. Someone needs to date and take care of all of LMJ’s ex-girlfriends
6. For the love of god, do not let any player give Darron Thomas a ride. Tell him to take the bus, call a cab or hoof it, no one let that man into your passenger seat.

Funny story...

My fiancee and I had to sit in the Wisconsin section behind the band… When DAT broke that 96 yarder I hoisted her up in the air, screaming at the top of my lungs. When I let her back down she lost her footing and fell on a ten year old sitting in front of us. Come to find out he was the band director’s grand son! Best of all he was an awesome sport, he even shook our hand after the game.

There were certainly a lot of punks outside of the stadium, but I have to say they kept it pretty classy where I sat. It was surreal to see their band quiet following the last play, through the end of the trophy ceremony.

I panicked when I couldn't get tickets through Oregon...

So I went to stubhub and found the lowest possible row, with a price I could afford. I later found out it was the Wisconsin side. Then when we got there we discovered we were about 6 rows back from the band.

It was kind of awesome to be honest with you. I had two duck fans to my right and two back and to our left. We had a great view of College Gameday too.

We had some friendly jeering back and forth. However I think the one thing that really pissed them off is when I initiated the duck’s pushup count from about 150 yards away. We got to see LT’s game winning TD and of course DAT’s balls out run.

Had a great view of everyone else in the yellow. A big bummer was that we were the only section that was not showered in confetti :-(

With the exception of Carson York’s injury, I couldn’t have really asked for a better game. The wiscy fans were a good time and pretty respectful for the most part.

Let's give it a few weeks first

I’m inclined to agree, but Bellotti arguably did not have the talent for most of the time he was coaching, did build the program up from an also-ran to a consistently good team and was a great, even keel for many years.

Kelly’s had 3 years, and a lot of those years were filled with controversy and a bit of scandal – something Bellotti didn’t have. I love Kelly and think that he’s a great, great football coach. I’m not willing to make him the best coach of all time for the Ducks yet.

Not really comparing

Just playing off one posters hysteria about how Chip was inferior to Bellotti after the LSU game (atq classic) . His argument… Scoreboard. In reality you can not compare the two. One was a builder, the other the executioner.

by DCDuck on Jan 3, 2012 11:56 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

With Bellotti

Oregon was never playing in the Cowboy classic, which is essentially a second bowl game (complete with high payout and big TV).

Oregon was never in the top 5 to start the season.

Oregon did not have a disappointment of a season by ‘just’ winning the Rose Bowl. And yes, there are commentators that are saying that.

I truly love Bellotti and what he did for the Ducks. I disliked a lot of his playcalling and apparently some of the way he managed Aliotti, who is now a stud and a half after having some fairly weak times in the past, but he was great for the program where it was. Just like Brooks was great for the program where it was.

his days weren’t devoid of controversy and scandal by any means

by echo31 on Jan 3, 2012 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

I don’t remember the thought that Bellotti would ever be sanctioned heavily in his time – was he? Same with controversy, especially on the players doing bad things in the offseason. I absolutely admit ignorance here and do not actually know, but it’s not something I’ve heard of happening. Do you have examples?

Ah, that's right

I had forgotten about that. And that sucked, but I don’t think it was anything close to Lyles or Masoli or even Blount.

by kalon on Jan 3, 2012 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think, partly, you heard less because the media cared less because the team was worse.

The Lyles thing is admittedly bigger than anything I can remember from Bellotti (potentially), but forging an LOI isn’t the best idea, and it got the Ducks on probation. I’m not coming up with a ton of super-definite examples of bad off-field behavior, but there was certainly the usual trickle. I think a lot of the incidents that make the last few years seem to tumultuous on that front really are the kinds of things we never would have heard about if the team weren’t under such scrutiny (DUI/ MIP/ Pot/ Traffic Tickets/ etc). But yeah, I can’t remember anything quite like Masoli for combination of high profile/ bfd misconduct.

Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.

by omb on Jan 3, 2012 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

You also heard less because you heard less about EVERYTHING. Media is immediate and virtually omnipresent now. It certainly grew a lot during Bellotti’s tenure, but wasn’t at the level it is at the present. Maybe there were less incidents then, but maybe there were roughly the same and we just didn’t hear about all of them because the team was worse (as you mention) and because media wasn’t as prolific.

This is a good point.

If I’m remembering right twitter and whatnots were a big thing in the breaking Masoli stories, and social media / omnipresent internet was a big part of a lot of this stuff – both amateurs, and dissemination of pro or semi-pro sources. Things travel farther, faster, and if they get legs they’re much harder to kill. Even a few years ago a lot of that stuff wasn’t as pervasive.

It’s shocking sometimes to see what people got away with and swept under the rug years ago when no one was really watching.

Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.

by omb on Jan 3, 2012 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, absolutely

Being on the national stage got us that spotlight. I suspect there were plenty of suspensions and being kicked off the team for various indiscretions (for instance, I totally bet Richie Incognito got kicked off the team for something like what Cliff Harris did), but we didn’t hear about it or it wasn’t a big deal. I just didn’t actually think that we’d seen the big ones either, like Masoli. Maybe I’m wrong, and that’s what I’m curious about – events from the 90s and 00s where something huge didn’t happen but because we weren’t that big a deal it just got basically ignored.

Definitely. My first games were pre-Joey, and it was a completely different state of mind

You really didn’t expect to win, you didn’t expect to be in any national conversations, and you were happy if you won a game. Joey started the whole winner mentality for me, defined success for Oregon for a new generation. It was a real change in my expectations. And then, for whatever reason, we seemed to take a dive. We didn’t really believe in ourselves, didn’t get the most of our talent. During the Joey years, I’d argue we over-achieved. Until we had Chip come in and turn Dennis Dixon and the offense into the sweetest throwing magical ride ever, I didn’t see ourselves on the national picture level. Chip coming in altered the landscape and expectations forever. I don’t know how long it will last, but it is certainly no brief fluke. Chip has instilled a system, the program has the facilities, the money, the recognition, the marketing now to keep it on the highest level for at least a while. Yes, folks, success is here to stay.

Bill Musgrave would like to talk to you about Bill Musgrave.

But yeah, same idea, just a few years earlier and more middling expectations.

What I liked about the Musgrave era is that we never, ever expected to win anything, but on any given day we might go out and beat #4 BYU (or whatever they were ranked) just because we felt like it. Then we’d be up by 4 touchdowns to Cal and lose somehow, but there was just this feeling that things were on the rise, which has turned out to be true, for like 20 years now. Ok Benz, go ahead and tell me how ‘89 to ’94 was more about suffering and less about gradual improvement, but I CAN’T HEAR YOU.

Terrell Brandon gave us the same feeling in hoops. He had terrible help. One other guy that could rebound and catch a few passes from TB in the key and make a layup (anybody remember that guy’s name? Loved him). Any given day TB could win a game by himself against top 5 Arizona or UCLA teams, and then our maniacle celebrations would cause Mac Court would fall upon us and kill us all. The 5’11 giant killer, didn’t matter how well someone defended him, if he felt like making some crazy layup, he did.

Alright, I’ve convinced myself, I need to change my name to Terrell Brandon, that guy was the shit.

This quote is from B5Q
For the most part, the Badgers were able to keep up with Oregon’s high-octane offense. They never trailed in the first half, and dominated the time of possession battle.

I totally agree that they kept up with our offense, and they played a great game. No issues with that at all. But “time of possession battle”? Really – it’s only a battle when the other side is trying to win it too. A more appropriate characterization would be:

“Wisconsin possessed the ball for a longer period of time, Oregon having long ago realized that there would be greater benefit in scoring points than endlessly holding the football in a huddle or at the line scrimmage.”

That's not really what it does

All TOP does is limit the number of possessions BOTH teams get. That’s it. It doesn’t keep them off the field. It doesn’t make it harder for Oregon to get possessions. There are times in the game that it matters because of the breaks – namely late in the 2nd and 4th quarter – but overall TOP doesn’t matter whatsoever.

Now, when would you want to limit possessions? When you are outmatched. The more likely it is that you cannot beat a team because they are better than you the fewer possessions you want, because it means that you just need to get lucky once or twice. The more possessions that you allow, the more likely it is that each team reverts to their statistical mean.

This is why Wisconsin might want to get TOP – because they want to just rely on a couple of lucky breaks. But most of the time, isn’t an issue at all. It’s much better to look at number of plays and number of yards per play.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

This is well-known to all Duck fans, or anybody who's had to play the Ducks regularly

but is still an attractive, giant candy-cane for those not too familiar with us, which makes it all the more enjoyable when they find themselves down by several TDs even though they’re dominating the ToP. I say, let them continue to be woefully misguided!

Agreed

But top can be useful for tiring out defenses (other than Oregon’s).

by builds character on Jan 3, 2012 12:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

We've never had any issue tiring out opponents.

It’s the consistency of the beating, not just the duration, that wears the team down. We do it in 10 mins, Wiscy does it in 35, both to the same effect.

by Duckfanatic10 on Jan 3, 2012 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

Point of fact

You can tire someone out a lot more effectively with almost no TOP. Again, it’s plays, not TOP, that matter. If you run 8 plays in 2 minutes that’s going to kill someone; if you run 8 plays in 5 minutes that’s going to make them a bit tired.

Though tiring out the opponents and winning that way was last year, basically. We didn’t emphasize that nearly as much this year for a variety of reasons; my gut suspicion is that Kelly saw how it didn’t matter at all when you have a Big Game (with TV timeouts all the time) so it’s best to learn how to beat teams without it being an issue and only use it when you need to push it on that specific drive.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 3, 2012 1:02 PM PST up reply actions

I think there's also an element of getting an offense off it's rhythm

If you have a nine minute drive that goes over a quarter end, you could be looking at a half hour of real time.

Against a lesser team, this would cause muscles to tighten, thoughts of anxiousness, and general reductions in adrenalin associated with being in the game. Thereby, increasing the opportunity for a 3 and out.

However, as we all know, the Duck offense is not susceptible to such strategies.

Who needs normal sleep patterns?

by AcadianTraverse on Jan 3, 2012 3:28 PM PST up reply actions

Opponents can continue to believe TOP has meaning unto the end of time as far as I'm concerned.

Works in our favor to let them believe it matters against us.

Maybe it’s because I’m a Ducks fan but I thought everyone knew that T.O.P is the most meaningless stat in games that the Ducks play in, plus I don’t know if dominating the T.O.P is something for them to brag about for them since we outgained them by over a 100 yards & they had the ball for over 11 minutes more

How things change in just a few years...

I went back to a FanPost I made about expectations at the beginning of the 2008 season. In it, I basically posed the question, “is 1 BCS bowl game every 5 years expecting too much, too little, or just right?” I recall thinking that I thought for sure we could contend for Pac 10 titles more regularly than we had been and wanting to see what ATQ thought (this was back before the Daily Quack Fix when 20 comments was a pretty good amount for a front page post).

In that thread, some really respected ATQ mods / regulars had some comments that, looking back now, are funny to read. But at the time it was completely reasonable thinking. It’s just crazy how far we’ve come in a really short period of time and I thought some of you might enjoy it.

What caliber is our program?
In 94 we hadn’t been to a Rose Bowl in 37 years. Our next BCS bowl was 2001, and we haven’t been since.

1 every 5 years is a place to start. We haven’t gotten close to that in the history of the program. Fans who expect more than that have not been around for too long.

I expect Oregon to consistently end up in the upper half of the Pac-10, and make a real run at a Pac-10 title every few years. We also have to realize that USC has a stranglehold on the conference. This probably won’t end anytime soon, upsets not withstanding.

by jtlight on Sep 26, 2008 12:52 PM PDT
Acceptable for me is a lot like how I look at hoops. If we’re not in the dance, I’m not happy about it. In my mind, football’s dance is participating in – at the very least – moderately good bowl games. Being competitive and relevant. Being a team that no other team can ever look past. I’m cool with the Sun Bowl. The Holiday Bowl is right up with there with the best non-BCS games. For me, I consider a BCS selection as all those pieces falling into place. I’ll hope for it every year. Rarely would I ever expect it.

Can I realistically expect that Oregon will play one game for a national title at some point in my lifetime? USC fans certainly can. So can fans at Ohio State, Florida, LSU and Michigan. I’m not sure we can as Oregon fans. Though we can certainly and realistically hope that it might happen.

But that’s the thing about expectations. They are constantly changing based on the information we have in front of us.

OK, so I don’t expect it, but I do like the pattern and the Ducks chances next year. In the early ‘90s, ’next year’ was followed by ‘might be our year [to go to a decent bowl, to beat .500, to do something else that now seems mediocre].’

I love that Chip Kelly is such a smartass
De’Anthony averaged 77.5 yards per carry. Any reason why he didn’t get a third carry?

There were two calls that were going to happen for De, but he returned long kickoffs, so I had to take him out for a play. I’m going to have to work on his wind. I’m going to have to be a better play caller. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a kid average 77 yards a carry. I’ll see if next year we can get him an extra carry or two.

I'm not sure if I'm the one you're talking about, but I called and posted about it last week

There were no plans to make these available for retail purchase, but the the CSR I spoke with said that might change if-and I rightly corrected her by saying “when”- the Ducks won the Rose Bowl. They will definitely be available in their future incarnations (read regular uniforms) come June or July. My own opinion (and I agree this is complete speculation) is that retailers had a hart time moving ’09 RB, ’10 Natty and ’11 CC unis, but they also never lowered the prices after the losses.

And in the "you want some cheese with that whine?" dept:

Comment on Wisconsin St Journal message board…

The football is either in or out. If it breaks the plain of the goal it is out of the end zone just like when it is in for a touchdown. These refs were some of the worst cheaters I have ever seen in a big game like this one. I saw the Badgers reciever Beliema being held by his facemask when he fumbled the ball and was trying to get the ball back with a ref standing over the top of him!. I also saw the ducks holding and were never called on it. One of the ducks had a Badger in a headlock at the line and was never called for holding. It is hard to take a loss like this one when people were cheating! And what about the timeout that was taken away from the Badgers?. I hope that these refs get fired from football for cheating!

I think there was holding on both sides that wasn’t called. As for the ball being out of the endzone on that kick return, it clearly hadn’t COMPLETELY crossed the plane of the goal-line. Now, I have no idea why this rule is different from any other rule where all the football has to do is break the plane, but that’s the rule, and it was explained clearly on the broadcast.

But I have to say, I sympathize in one regard. I hate it when our coach calls timeout and they actually charge us with a timeout. That’s the worst.

The refs were very, very hands-off

There were a bunch of false starts not called, a bunch of holds not called, some PI calls that should have been called that weren’t, multiple face masks (including a tackle of DAT by the facemask that I know of)…there were just calls all over the place not being made.

IT was true for other games as well -the OKST/Stanford game seemed to have the ‘let ’em play’ vibe going on.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Actually, I think that’s mostly just “football.” We’re so used to micro-managing Pac 12 refs, that when the referees let them play, it seems like anarchy out there. I loved it.

I'd agree with all except the facemask.

There was one game a while ago (Baylor/huskies?) that was full of egregious facemask penalties but weren’t called, even the announcers noticed and called the refs on them.

The one that swung DAT’s head around in the RB yesterday was rather frightening. One of those is going to severely injure a player…

Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!

by gamedaytribe on Jan 3, 2012 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

I honestly didn’t notice that one. And yeah, I’d agree that there are some penalties that always need to be called, either because they’re dangerous plays (like a facemask) or because they are procedural and there’s no real room for interpretation (like false starts/illegal formations/encroachment). But some of the touchy stuff like holding and pass interference…you can call that on almost any play if you really want to.

If it breaks the plain of the goal it is out of the end zone just like when it is in for a touchdown.

You all know this, but this is factually incorrect.

The duck fan behind me was an idiot

The few times DT threw an incompletion he would yell to stop passing and saying DT is a bad passer. The kid had a 70% completion, 3 tds and 300 yds. What more do you want?

because then once one is picked off, he always throw high over the middle and is completely inaccurate.

I understand the snark, given the amount of over-reaction about Thomas’ struggles. But honestly, if we’d seen THIS DT against USC, I think we win that game.

I think he was fantastic in this game. He had a couple high throws, but he looked good early, and he didn’t sail nearly as many as he’d been sailing. I know Tuinei had the game of his life, but DT put some damn fine throws in between defenders.

Defending maligned chants since 2009

by Gorbachav5 on Jan 3, 2012 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

He had a couple high throws in a close period in the 2nd

Which culminated in the INT, and some got all crazy like. But I didn’t care because he started fantastic. No 1st quarter jitters, no “he has no trust in his knee,” just solid throws and much fewer drops. I love DT.

by INducktrination on Jan 3, 2012 5:59 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree

We didn’t lose the USC game because of DT. We lost because it took 3.5 quarters for one of our running backs to wake up, our receivers had more drops than can fit in a bucket, and I believe Marqise Lee just caught another long pass on Troy Hill

I don’t think DT was the MAIN cause of us losing that game, but he wasn’t good in the first 2.5 quarters either. If he plays like he did yesterday, we win that game.

A thought or two...

This win is amazing. It feels as good as I imagined. But if this game is a 10/10 in terms of joy, the years we knocked OSU out of the Rose Bowl were 9.9/10. The feelings for me were closely related. Seriously though, what a day this has been.

Also, I know this is being picky, because a win is a win, but I would have loved to see Paulson get a bit more action. It’s his final game, and he’s so freaking important to our offense and a really likable guy. One final DP touchdown would have been fun to see.

But at the same time, he did have that monster Civil War, and I feel good about that being his moment if the Rose Bowl couldn’t have been.

But the guy was clutch and awesome. He had a hell of a game with many outstanding throws. It’s amazing how good he can be when he’s on. Great team effort all around, too many standouts to name. It’s so cool when literally everyone contributes to a big win. So proud to be a Duck fan. Rose Bowl CHAMPS!!!

know any DT haters who've texted you before the RB?

Hell, this one’s easy, you know what to to: write down every word, verbatum, and scissor-cut each one out individually and put in an envelope. Find a large metal spoon, like you’d see on the serving line of a cafeteria, toss in a 2 tablet packet of pepto bismol and a packet of salt. Wrap it all up & mail it to the guy, no return address. Do not text/have any communication for a few days after you know he has recieved it. None! This is important.
Now send him a packet of pepper, and a note, “sorry. I forgot the pepper”. Shortly after he gets this, then call/text him, ask him how the meal was.
