Greg Biggins said that we should have DAT play CB next year as well. It would put another playmaker on D but I don’t think he’d be up to going both ways

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Jan 4, 2012 8:07 AM PST up reply actions

Well, DAT needs to be a feature of our team

I think this means that he gets ~10-15 carries, plays slot when not at RB and PR/KR. This seems like a pretty heavy load already.
If Chip feels that he can’t handle 15 carries a game due to stature and should just be a slot WR that mostly caries out of the sweep than he needs to be on the field more. Playing CB, PR/KR, 5 carries and occasional slot WR sounds pretty bad ass, a la Charles Woodson.
Also, If James stays and keeps his 25 carries a game DAT will be underutilized, we’d need to make him either the primary WR or a CB to use him enough.

One thing that really hasn't been mentioned

Remember on Wisconsin’s last drive when Boyette leveled Nick Toon and both looked out of sorts? If Boyette didn’t get up from that (he was VISIBLY wobbly) and there was a medical TO, it would have given Wisconsin to pull together for a final play rather trying to spike it.

by skyo12 on Jan 4, 2012 9:11 AM PST reply actions

I was thinking the same thing.

If Boyett didn’t man up and run his wobbly ass back into position the game could have ended much differently. Boyett is a BOSS!

by Pelhament on Jan 4, 2012 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

Toon got up too

Which was surprising to me. I figured he’d stay down and stop the clock.

That's a good point

Plus if you watch the end of the game look at the Oregon sideline, there is a coaching asking if he should call a timeout and pointing at Boyett. Could you imagine if one of the coaches had called timeout?

That ending was so crazy and the whole time I’m just staring at the clock going… run, run, run.

by Quack Addict on Jan 4, 2012 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

A rule implemented this year

is penalties incurred in the last minute of half can be executed in the following ways: 1) accepted for yards + 10 seconds off clock, 2) accepted for yards only, or 3) declined. There are probably a few more quirks to it but them’s the basics.

It was implemented following Tennessee and UNC’s bowl game last year where a UNC penalty of too many men on the field stopped the clock and allowed UNC to spike the ball, setting up a FG that sent the game to OT where UNC eventually won.

by INducktrination on Jan 4, 2012 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

As for injuries + runoff

There’s nothing saying a timeout must be used to avoid the run off. That, I do believe, is NFL only.

by INducktrination on Jan 4, 2012 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

ok yea, I knew that but that doesn't apply to injuries.

Or at least shouldn’t because that would be absolutely absurd to pin a loss on someone who was legitimately injured.

…Wakes up in hospital 3 days later. “did we win?”
“No Frankie you got knocked out cold and didn’t get up so the refs ran 10 seconds off the clock, the game ended and we never got that shot at a FG. Coach is pretty pissed at you since he got fired right after, they said he couldn’t win the big game.”

This. We were in the prevent-iest of prevent defenses and that’s why they moved the ball. They HAD to score a TD on the next play. Could it happen? Yes. But I’ve seen some stories and comments that make it seem like they “lost at the last second” when, in reality, even with the extra second they probably have about, what… a 1-in-50 shot at winning?

Matt Daddy's comment last night about Kiko and Clay was spot on.

I’m watching the game and it’s amazing how good they are in tandem. Kiko is excellent at making that quick aggressive read that allows Clay to make a calculated play off of his actions. That third down stop in the second quarter, with five minutes left, is a perfect example. Kiko reads the snap plugs a whole and Clay fills the other gap with precision and poise.

I love having those two guys together manning the middle of the 3-4

Kiko is a balls to the wall, I’m going to go hit something tazmanian devil. He’ll take on any fullback, any pulling guard and try and push the play back. Clay is calculating and assassin like. He shoots gaps created by Kiko makes reads on swing passes and gets to guys on the outside.

You add in BoLo’s speed on one edge, Dion Jordan on the other, put in a reserve guy like Wallace, and our LBs look out of this world next year.

1 thing that Kiko NEEDS to do though

Is Wrap up a guy like Monty Ball in the hole. There were too many times last night where Kiko lowered the boom and ball just bounced off of him and picked up 10-15 yards. If he puts his shoulder down and wraps on those plays like when Clay drove Ball backwards on a textbook tackle, Kiko would have had another 5 tackles on an already impressive night.

Kiko's INT was beautiful I thought

I saw the guy lined up in the slot and that huge cushion and was like, “look at the slot receiver’s cushion! He’s throwing it to that guy for sure.” Kiko baited Wilson, dove on the ball, and made a HELL of a catch.

by MarineCorpsDuck on Jan 4, 2012 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

It was great

It was a perfect example of an individual making a great decision. He had said that he thought he’d go to the sticks, since it was 3rd and 5. So he set up there and waited. And then pounced.

Now, that’s the sort of thing that you can use against a player but it was no guts, no glory, and honestly that’s the only major way we were going to beat Wisconsin; we had to make some chancy plays.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Completely agree

especially with your paragraph. Neither team was going to shut the other team’s offense down for any kind of prolonged period, that much was clear. So taking some calculated risks was what was needed. And that’s exactly what I’d classify Kiko’s INT as – a calculated risk. The beauty of it is that the main thing that could go wrong there is a double move, but since it was the slot receiver and we had other people in coverage, it probably wouldn’t have gone for a huge gain.

I loved them. But just to see, I searched Twitter for Ducks Helmets and it was at least 90% extremely positive. People talking about wearing them to work as the GM of a Cadillac Dealer in Cali, wearing it to the club, and all kinds of other stuff. As many haters as there are out there, I was expecting it to be a LOT more negative stuff. It was interesting to see how many big(ish) named people were saying stuff too. Everything from UFC fighters (Brendan Shaub) to Supercross Champions (James Stewart) to NASCAR people (Michael Waltrip) to ESPN anchors and former NFL players (Mill Hill and Darren Shaper). From what I could see, the only people who didn’t like them were:

- Curmudgeons
- Older males
- Baver & Fusky fans

But there were even a lot of people in those categories who like them. I was surprised at how many people were saying “I don’t like the Ducks, but how can you not love those helmets?” I saw a Raider fan and a Seahawk fan both wishing their teams would do the same thing. You have to admit, that would look pretty sick for the Raiders.

At first it was a little shocking, but I REALLY liked how (in close up shots) you could literally see the uniform’s shoulder pads, Rose Bowl turf, and California sky wrapped around the holographic wings, subtle, yet powerful.

At night, they got even better. The wings shone through powerfully, and they complemented our home uniforms better. The only nitpick I could possibly have is that maybe the facemask could’ve been different.

I think that's a possibility

Something that kind of irks me is how many times I’ve heard people say

He should go, he’s not going to improve his draft stock if he stays.

How do people figure that? He’s projected as about a 3rd round pick. I’ve seen some mock drafts with him in the late 2nd, and some as low as the 4th round. But most have him in the 3rd round. What are the concerns with him? Well, Scout’s Inc (Insider only) says he has a few:

Power/Balance
Intangibles
Durability

I’m not sure why being a sprinter on the Oregon track team is listed under intangibles, but that’s beside the point. They have him marked as below average in Power/Balance, Intangibles, and Durability. He can improve his Power/Balance and the durability concerns, especially if he puts on another 10 pounds or so like he did this past offseason, while maintaining his breakaway speed, and finishes the season healthy. I feel like the intangibles is just a totally ridiculous grade and will be wiped away weather he goes out this year or next as soon as teams interview him and actually do a bit of research on the guy and what actually happened with that whole situation.

He’s currently listed as the 5th best RB behind Trent Richardson, David Wilson, Lamar Miller, and Chris Polk. Of those running backs, and the 5 listed behind LMJ as 6-10, he and Montee Ball are the only 2 who haven’t declared for the draft yet.

So I guess what I’m saying is I think he CAN improve his draft stock. Let’s say he goes in the beginning of the 3rd round. Last year the guy who went in the 1st pick of round 3, Terrell McClain, signed a 4 year, $2,800,000 deal that included a $700,000 signing bonus. Let’s say that by staying a year, he can improve his draft stock. If he could get to the middle of the 2nd round (Lance Kendricks) and move up just 15 or so spots, he’d be looking at a 4 year, $4,225,000 deal that includes a $1,500,000 signing bonus. And if he could sneak into the beginning of the 2nd round (Aaron Williams), it would be $5,200,000 with $2,320,000 signing bonus.

So if he leaves, by the end of the 2015 season (final year of contract if he leaves this season), he’d make $2,800,000. But if he stays and improves to the middle of the 2nd round, by the end of that same season he’d have MORE than that at $2,967,000 because of the higher signing bonus using the structure on Spotrac.com. And if he could get to the top of the first round, he’d have even more at $4,108,000. Plus, he’d still have the biggest payment due to him in the following year. And, if he didn’t make it and got cut because the NFL doesn’t have guaranteed contracts, the higher signing bonus would mean more money that he walks away with.

So, if he can’t improve his draft stock by coming back, it makes perfect sense for him to leave. But if he can improve it by proving he can carry the load for a full season without injury and adding some more muscle to his frame, and by maybe letting some of these other RB’s go out this year, naturally raising him up the ladder a bit (not to mention the potential increased marketability of possibly being the NCAA’s all time leading rusher), it might make sense for him to stay.

TL;DR version – I don’t necessarily think LMJ should stay, and I’m in full support of whatever he decides to do. But I don’t know that it’s as much of a no-brainer as some think, and it could be worth it if he can improve his stock.

by MarineCorpsDuck on Jan 4, 2012 1:26 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

A small problem

One way he will not improve his draft stock is by having a lot of wear in college. That he’d be a 4-year starter would only hurt him unless his performance next year is astronomical.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 4, 2012 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know about this

Especially with the non-guaranteed contracts. Sure no one is going to take him and sign him to a 10 year contract, but that doesn’t happen anyway. The wear and tear for him will be 3-4 years down the road in the NFL (as a full time feature back) when his contract is in his smallest pay years and most of the signing bonus is off the cap.

For some NFL teams that’s a better option than taking him and paying him the larger up front money for him to be their 3rd down back (which is why this year he may drop to the 3rd or 4th round). I agree with MCD that he could improve his draft stock, but really at this point, it’s about what he wants to do. I don’t think anyone holds it against him if he decides to leave.

by Matt Daddy on Jan 4, 2012 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

It means he won't be a first round pick, most likely

Because a first round pick is expected to be around for 5-6 years at least. And if he has that much wear and that much of an injury risk, chances are that he’ll have some issues.

Though honestly, the number of teams that go for first round RB picks now is pretty small; Ingram, a Heisman winner, got picked late in the first. Chances are it’s immaterial.

CJ Spiller was a RB who played all 4 years and was hurt quite often. He was smallish, at 5’11", 197 pounds. The most carries he had in his first 3 season was 145 as a Sophomore. He came back his Senior season and had 216 carries for 1212 yards. He went #9 overall to the Bills in the 2010 NFL draft and got a 5 year, $25,000,000 contract with an almost $11,000,000 signing bonus.

You can play 4 years at RB and still get drafted plenty high.

by MarineCorpsDuck on Jan 4, 2012 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

He can probably have a down Sr year and still get drafter high.

Just clock in at around 4.3 – 4.4 and do well at the other areas at combine and he can probably rise to 2nd round pick (optimistic).

by skyo12 on Jan 4, 2012 2:57 PM PST up reply actions

He’s only 1315 yards from being the NCAA all time leading rusher. He has 5082 right now and Ron Dayne has 6397. 1315 would be his worst year yet. There’s something to be said for that and he could realistically shatter that if he stayed healthy. It’s not completely out of the question that he’d win the Doak Walker for a 2nd time, win a BCSNC, and become the NCAA’s leading rusher of all time next season. The Heisman would be a long shot, but not impossible. It certainly adds to the temptation to return, I’m sure.

Also, note that the NCAA used to not include bowl games in these totals. Note sure who all that applies to. Charles White (including bowl games) was over 6200 I believe, because the Pac-12 counts that in their records.

Speaking of not including bowl games...

They said during the game that Ball had tied Barry Sanders for the single season touchdown record.

Trouble is, back in ‘88 they didn’t include bowl games in season totals. Sanders had five TDs vs Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl, putting his total to 44 TDs in 12 games.

Ball had 39 TDs in 14 games. How exactly does Ball go into the record book alongside Sanders under those circumstances?

Nothing personal against Ball, but it would be a shame for Sanders to lose a record based on different (less demanding) criteria. Wtf?

Odd thing about this list

They all made The Show, but few had standout pro careers.

  • Dayne: played 7 seasons – Giants, Denver, Houston — never amounted to much.
  • Williams the Ricky: up and down, 11 seasons in 13 years, but still active with Ravens; has gained over 10K yards.
  • Dorsett: HOF career, mostly with Dallas
  • Williams the DeAngelo: currently sharing time with our old friend Snoop in Carolina.
  • White: made All-Pro 1st team once (Rams, ’87 — 1374 yards; never had another season over 342). Played eight years.
  • Prentice: drafted 3rd round by Browns, played mop-up duty there in 2000, in Minnesota in 2001, then disappeared.
  • Benson: Productive career with Chicago and now Cincinnatti.
  • LT: Probable member of 2016 HOF class, assuming he’s retiring.
  • Walker: 2 time Pro Bowler but never had the pro career most expected after he tore up the field in college.
  • Griffin: Started just 9 games in 7 seasons with the Bengals.
  • Cobourne: One season as a UFA with Detroit (2003). One carry for 19 yards, nine other carries for 8 yards.
  • Wolfe: Four seasons as a Bears benchwarmer. 72 carries, 282 yards, one TD.

Not a great comparison

He was faster, played more effectively at special teams and got drafted by the Bills (and was a mistake for them). He also didn’t carry nearly as much as LMJ did in those years. And the thought that someone like Spiller would be drafted that high again now is somewhat laughable.

Again, the issue isn’t that he’s 4 years a starter; it’s that he was the primary back for four years and has had injuries. That will be a red flag.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

I don’t think injuries will be a significant issue at all. That wouldn’t have been why he’d be a 2nd or 3rd round choice.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Jan 4, 2012 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

Correct.

Mostly because his injuries — at least this year’s — were total fluke, violently painful elbow injuries. He’s not getting naggy toe and knee injuries. He got hobbled near the end of 2010 from various small things, but nothing too worrisome.

He’s durable unless he’s getting his arms ripped off. Teams shouldn’t worry about injuries and LMJ.

Things like that.

by qrsouther on Jan 4, 2012 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

He also did have over 500 yards as a receiver,

which is probably another major reason he was drafted high.

I do agree with your general point though. Because LMJ will not be a high draft pick, he stands to potentially lose less by coming back than a top draft pick such as Trent Richardson would.

Why?

He’s probably a 3rd round pick at best but could easily be a 4th or 5th, another year isn’t going to hurt that, he’s having the time of his life at Oregon, his class load would be the easiest he’s ever had, and he’s got great facilities to continue to improve.

Obviously, the downside is he could get hurt (but that could happen in the NFL too) and he’s not getting paid. I just don’t think he’s turning down a lot of money at this point in coming back, and we’ve seen stranger things like Luck and Barkley pass up even more money to come back.

I think Luck and Barkley are much more financially "set" on a family basis than LMJ.

Both of those guys could afford to hang out and party for another year. And as QBs they don’t take the punishment a RB takes. LMJ is probably a third down back in Nfl, which will be a little easier than trying to be a feature back like Ingram, but also means he won’t go in an early round.

There’s no chance he returns to increase his draft stock IMHO. It’ll be a personal decision. My guess is that he is gone, but there’s always the chance he comes back just to make Aaron Fentress look stupid.

I wish

that instead of the NCAA passing the $2000 stipend to athletes recently, they had instead mandated that universities pay for insurance for the student athletes should an injury prevent them from turning pro. I read somewhere that Andrew Luck’s dad said the premium he paid to cover Andrew when he came back last year was “enormous” or “outrageous” or something similar. For Oliver Luck, that’s nothing. But for the parents of the poorer athletes, there’s no way they can cover it. It makes sense too, as its a safety net for these athletes, the universities and NCAA are protecting their assets and product.

Also, it makes me sad that Nate Costa not only couldn’t turn pro, but couldn’t even be a police officer because of the damage to his knees playing an amateur sport.

Yep

This is one of the hardest things that football teams do in college. It’s something that commentators routinely forget. In October there were what, 8 undefeated teams? And everyone was freaking out about OMG could there be a BCS CHAOS OMG OMG OMG.

Conveniently forgetting that even when you’re favored, you’re still playing a college football game and your players are 18-22 years old. Playing the same way, at the same level, and doing it well for 12-13 games is hard.

It’s funny to say how Darron Thomas is inconsistent – he is, sorta, but at the same time he’s so much better than so many other QBs because the Ducks do have this safe routine.

Heh

What’s really funny?

Can you imagine 10 years ago losing to Washington and them bringing down their goalposts and running around because they had just beaten Oregon Can you imagine OSU doing that or WSU doing that?

The closest we’ve had was Arizona’s win over Dixon’s ducks in 2007, but even that was sort of meh.

I can totally see that happening – but the thought that it could happen makes me laugh and laugh.

I could see it happening two years from now

I don’t honestly see it happening at Autzen unless we’re playing them super early in the season and don’t have much scouting on them (like that game in 2008 when we played them first thing to start the year, IIRC).

I could see it happening under Wilcox, though I think he’s a bit overrated as far as him ‘beating’ the Ducks twice; BSU had one great defensive performance against Oregon and one fairly horrible one where DT almost came back and won it after we did, well, nothing. He’s good, but he’s not like Les Miles. That being said, Washington and Price don’t have to be good on D to beat Oregon; they can simply be okay and not be so completely fail.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Well, they’ll be harder. Their offense was good last year, but they weren’t that good. They were only 35th in both S&P+ and FEI. They have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball to be able to be competitive with the great teams in the conference.

I doubt it.

I just really appreciate a coach as non-traditional and free-spirited as him. I’d wager that he’s one of the few head coaches in major college football whose lives aren’t dictated entirely by their jobs. There isn’t another coach in the country who studies ancient mariners, pirates, and other eccentric fields all while being an innovative and successful coach.

He’s the anti-coach, if you will, and that is why I’m inclined to respect him a great deal.

UW likely not

They have a brutal early schedule that involves Stanford, Oregon, USC and LSU in their first 6 I believe. If they’re ranked through that morass chances are they’re crazy good. UW might be ranked at the end of the year, but I doubt it. They’ll be lucky to get 7 wins in the regular season.

I would expect WSU to be ranked early on as they obliterate opponents by 50 points. USC clearly. Stanford may be early, but will probably go to 8-4 or something.

Polk was a good running back, but that team is now about Price, not Polk. Two years ago with Locker? Yes, they needed Polk. Now they just need a decent RB, and they have two in Sankey and Callier. It shouldn’t hurt them that much.

Their schedule will hurt them a ton, though.

Maybe

I really think that the defensive coaching was a major problem. While they don’t have a ton of talent on D they have decent guys; they were simply poorly disciplined and running schemes that didn’t take into consideration the fact they were not 5 star LBs heading to the NFL after only two years of college. It won’t take much to turn them into a competent defense. Not a stellar one, but simply one that won’t give up insane plays all the time. Really, something like Wisconsin’s would be fine. Kind of middle of the pack as far as advanced stats go.

They could also take a lot more risks and get more turnovers; that would be an easy way to get better fast.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

by kalon on Jan 4, 2012 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

We can beg to differ, polk was/is an amazing back and much of Price’s success is due to having a strong RB in the backfield.

Sankey will be good, but he’s still young to be the primary back, and Callier I havn’t really seen what he’s done.

I never understood the Callier fall off this year

He was such a good change of pace back for Uw last year and he had 30 less carries and 170 less yards. I thought he had a lot of promise for them in 2010, but Sark just didn’t use him much in 2011. We’ll see if he can step up and be a feature back for them.

Either way, unless they get some serious help on the O-line and Price continues to progress, they’re still a middle of the Pac and fighting for a bowl game team.

With the new ESPN and FOX media rights agreement as well as the launch of the Pac-12 Networks in August, every Pac-12 football game will be available to fans on a national clearance, eliminating regional distribution which was prevalent in the prior broadcast arrangements. Rose Bowl Thoughts

I’m still smiling, it feels so good to see our Ducks as Rose Bowl Champions!

I think this win validates so much of what Chip and crew have built up and sold. The flashy helmets and uniforms help attract players like DAT and LMJ. The system put up 45 points and a million yards in the Rose Bowl.

While the Badgers didn’t have a dominant force like Fairley, they were a BIG team. The old size vs. speed debate has to change after our guys, even the undersized lineman, beat those huge cornfed boys. We showed that our commitment to speed and versatility can compete at the highest level, and we can win the big game by doing what we do.

Chip’s catch phrases have become a running joke (Day to day, not dealing in hypotheticals, etc.) but watching him at the end of that game one thing struck me: This really IS the Super Bowl to him. For all the staring and quips to the media and “stay the course” attitude, this means a lot to him and winning the Rose Bowl is just as exciting for Chip Kelly as it is for any of us. It’s fun to think of him as a Spread Guru with a robot brain and cold-fusion logic matrix, but I’ll never forget seeing him jumping up and down on that sideline exactly the same way I was jumping up and down in my living room.

no one is talking about the defenses ability to get into the backfield on first and second downs in the second half.

i thought that was clearly the difference maker in the game. tackles for no gain and/or loss of yards were HUGE in the second. notice that as soon as that started happening it was as if the linebackers knew exactly were the hot reads would be so they could get there asap. it was awesome, the defensive line would even bait the wiscy running backs into taking a specific lane, where Clay or Kiko would be ready to strike. just awesome second half adjustments by the defense. awesome!

Against SC, the bar is to keep them from defining the game.

But it’s going to have to be a complete team effort. They can’t be allowed to run at will, and the DL will have to get pressure on Barkley. Oh, and the offense can’t DERP! in the redzone twice, then take until the mid-3rd to wake the Clemson up.

Our DB’s got terrorized because USC put themselves in second and short situations. They could afford to take way too many shots downfield. If we can pressure Barkley, and if our linebackers can shut down the running game on first down, the DB’s will be in a much better situation to succeed.

We need to play our “second half against Wisconsin” style of defense to beat USC.

that's what happens when you've exhausted your second, third, and fourth strings

You cycle back to the front, like a baseball batting lineup.

Eh, it’s sportsmanship. You play the game to get a win, not to embarrass the other team. At the professional level, I don’t care as much. You’re paid to do this, so be good at it.

But at amateur levels, I think running up the score is classless.

I have always felt that toning down playcalling to three predictable runs per drive is just as embarrassing as having the opposing team score a few more times. I feel that purposefully giving up on offense is just as (if not more) demeaning than continuing to try hard.

The real thing is to just seal the game and get it over with.

Sure it would. I’m not suggesting to take a knee. I’m suggesting you put in reserve players and run the ball. Players should still be trying their hardest, but you’re not trying to do anything crazy at this point.

I think a Big East team

Should run up the score at every chance they get, and shame on the other team for allowing them to do it.

If you’re playing Portland State or something, that’d be one thing.

Bowl games are a whole different ballgame. I love this, and I never despised Neiuheisal over the fake punt thing.

He sure had a lot more time than most of the other winning coaches to think of what he'd say

He had 3 quarters of basically idle time. He’s probably done his taxes for 2012 and booked his spring break holiday.

And they need to NOT DO THAT TO ME with the next story below. All I saw was “DeAnthony” and “tranfer,” then saw the rest after I woke up from fainting.

Somewhere in Eugene, LaMichael James just added this bit of info to his decision matrix.
