Oregon 2012 Football Schedule Released: Ducks at USC Nov. 3
With the Pac-12 season officially over, the Pac-12 has released the 2012 conference football schedule. With the Pac-12 games announced, we know Oregon's schedule. Here it is (thanks to ProbablyMonty in the comments)
Sat, 9/1: vs. Arkansas State
Sat, 9/8: vs. Fresno State
Sat, 9/15: vs. Tennessee Tech
Sat, 9/22: vs. Arizona
Sat, 9/29: @ Washington State
Sat, 10/6: vs. washington
Thu, 10/18: @ Arizona State
Sat, 10/27: vs. Colorado
Sat, 11/3: @ Southern Cal
Sat, 11/10: @ California
Sat, 11/17: vs. Stanford
Sat, 11/24: @ Oregon State
Fri, 11/30: PAC-12 championship
Obviously, the first thing that jumps out at you is the game against USC. With Colorado following, and a Thursday game before that, the Ducks will hopefully be in good shape injury-wise heading into the likely battle for Pac-12 supremacy.
But once again, Oregon will have a very tough November. After USC, they must go again on the road to Cal's rebuilt stadium (though the visitor's locker room won't have any improvements). Then, Stanford at home, followed by what may be an improved OSU team on the road, followed up by (hopefully) a Pac-12 title game.
With a very weak non-conference schedule, it's very likely that Oregon is set up well for a run into November, but 3 games in a row against USC, Cal, and Stanford, with the first two on the road, don't make me thrilled
With a large chunk of the team back next season, Oregon is expected to be a contender for the national title. With the back-loaded schedule and an assumed preseason ranking, the Ducks are set up well for both if they can take care of business.

Is that officially at CenturyLink? I couldn’t find a confirmation of that anywhere.

There are no notes indicating a venue other than Pullman on the Pac 12 site, while there are footnotes for the CU/CSU, USC/Syracuse, and all washington home games.
"What the hell was that?"
"Spaceball One, they've gone to plaid!"
I noticed that too
I know WSU proposed it for both Oregon and WSU games, and Oregon turned it down, plus OSU played there this year, but I never heard it confirmed that it would be there and the Pac 12 site doesn’t state it.

I don't know either
At this point I think we have to assume it’s in Pullman.
Though scheduling wise it could be there; Stanford and Washington is on Thursday.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
Nah, I was going on info from earlier, when Moos said it was likely for this season.

On CougCenter
they are certain that our game is at CenturyLink. Every home Oregon or Oregon State game for them for the next 10 years is in Seattle. Great for Duck and Beaver fans, and they get to make a little more money out of the deal.
And we don't have to deal with the Palousian wind.
Hmmm….that might effect the usefulness of an air raid offense. I’m just sayin’….

Gods I hope this is true
I think it should be true; Moos was really pushing for it and it adds a ton of exposure to the game and to WSU, and think about all the fans who would love to see a WSU/leach game on this side of the Cascades.
Really really hope.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
I confirmed it with Brian Floyd of Coug Center
He didn’t have a link, but said that Moos wanted the Oregon games played there to increase gate revenue. I’m going to believe it’s at the Clink until I hear otherwise.

What I like about this is on initial glance, I don’t see 3 tough games in a row like the Washington/USC/Stanford mess that was this year.

The “Obvious Hard Game is Obvious” Game: @ USC
The “Stanford 09 Memorial Dreaded Potential Trap Game” Game (brought to you by Admiral Akbar Cereal): @ Cal
The “Sneaky Tough Plus Pirates” Game: @ WSU
The “Who the Hell Knows; It’s the Civil War” Game: @ OSU
Honestly, I’m a bit worried about that game @ WSU, especially if it’s at the Palouse. If not, it’s not that big a deal, but we always seem to struggle there, it’s our first away game, and we will probably not have been tested to that point. Mike Leach scares me.

At least the palouse is in October
That helps a lot.
If it is in the Palouse and they’re undefeated, I can almost guarantee you gameday may be in play. ESPN loves Oregon and everyone loves pirate scoring matches of death.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
Oregon is expected to not only compete for a Pac-12 championship and national championship.
incorrect conjunction perhaps?
Just a little bit of pointless self-trivia
I have seen two Duck games in my life: 2001 at WSU and 2010 at WSU. I also plan on attending next years WSU game. Thus far, when I witness a game live, they go onto play in the Natty (I count ‘01 because everyone agrees they were the most deserving to play Miami). Let’s hope this “trend” holds true.
"It's not about style. It's about winning the game. That's it." - Chip Kelly
We certainly should
Barring injury or probation, that is absolutely what we should expect. The toughest game right now is Washington and that’s at home. WSU might be tough but we still should have the talent advantage. Arizona shouldn’t be improved that dramatically (especially with Foles and Criner gone).
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
I was hoping to see USC earlier,
But it seems like the Pac might have been banking on this so they could set up a later-season “Game of the Century, For Real This Time, We Swear.”

point well taken but
Yes, some guys are a force of personality, but OSU was pretty shallow at reciever, and eventually had to turn to a frosh QB. The MSU defensive line never thought for a minute the play would happen behind them. Oh and the line backers were pretty thin too. From an OSU vantage, I’d say the cupboard was pretty bare. Still, I see what you are saying.
"NCAA/BCS is about cash money, and Boise can't afford the buy in" - president of "the" Ohio State University.
Also...
I don’t think its fair to compair Wuff to Fickell. Fickell is a bright defensive coordinator who is going places, but not nearly as experienced as Wuff. He found himself with an interesting opportunity, and had a rough time with it. Still, when all is said and done, I bet Fickell ends his career in a better place, with a better result than Wuff.
"NCAA/BCS is about cash money, and Boise can't afford the buy in" - president of "the" Ohio State University.
He didn't need them at TTech
And didn’t have them until significantly later on in his coaching career. I don’t think that he’ll get a rose bowl this year, but I absolutely believe two things:
1) they will win the Apple Cup
2) they will already be bowl-eligible before that.

This is a very fair point.
However, the elephant in the room is SC, and trap games all over. We could reach RB, but we could easily be knocked out of NATTY contention, BCS top 14 (need at least BCS 14).
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
Just what defines a trap game?
A team forecast to be weak who suddenly plays big, or a better team that fails to take its opponent seriously?
"NCAA/BCS is about cash money, and Boise can't afford the buy in" - president of "the" Ohio State University.
A trap game is more about schedule than anything else. The classic example is Stanford in ‘09 for us. You’re coming off of a big win, you’re playing an opponent you should beat, but who is a decent team, and there’s a reason to be focused on things ahead (like another tough opponent coming up, or the fact that you’re undefeated or on pace for a conference title).
This can also happen BEFORE you play a tough opponent, if you’re looking ahead to the bigger game.
I don’t think WSU is a trap game. There’s not really a big game to look ahead to in the immediate future. I just think it’s a game where the team could be taken advantage of if they come out flat. WSU will be motivated, and it will be a road game.
I think @Cal or home against Stanford are the potential trap games on this schedule.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
I dont' think stanford was a trap game
Cal was a trap game. Stanford was simply Stanford asserting dominance in the later part of the season; they also obliterated USC the following week, so it wasn’t like they were a bad team. They just caught fire later on.
Cal in 2010 was a trap game. They had played weirdly, weren’t particularly good and had all sorts of issues and we had just beaten Washington in a game that was a lot closer than we wanted it to be (and lost Costa). I guess by definition Stanford was a trap game because it came between USC and Arizona, but that was just a pretty tough schedule, period.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
In some sense, it’s irrelevant how good Stanford became. It’s about how Oregon prepared for the game, and there were definite rumblings that preparation for that game wasn’t the best coming off the emotional win over USC. The preparation factor is what makes a game a “trap game.” At least, that’s the way I’ve always thought about it.
It’s a game you feel you should win, and that, along with some other factor (coming off a big win, looking ahead to a big game) leads to below average preparation.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
You can call it a trap, or a letdown (which I probably would), or whatever you want
That was a game Oregon wasn’t prepared for, and lost as a direct result of that.
That was a good Stanford team, but it wasn’t that good. They beat USC, only to lose at home to a not very good Cal team the next week.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
A trap game is defined as anything The Media calls a "Trap Game."
It’s a Possible Trap Game if The Media Analyst thinks there’s a chance Favored Team might lose for [insert nebulous reasoning here].
If Favored Team loses game to team that was a Significant Underdog, it will henceforth be referred to as a Trap Game by The Media Analyst.
If Favored Team wins said game, it was not a Trap Game after all.

The way I see it
In addition to surviving the usual ups and downs of a 13-game season, we have to beat USC twice in the same year to reach the NCG. That’s going to take a hell of a lot more than ‘staying focused’. I look at the schedule, and yes, 13-0 is a real possibility. But so is 10-3.

The drawback to that schedule
is with the weak perception of the Pac-12, a 13-0 schedule probably wouldn’t be enough to get into the national championship game if two undefeated teams from the SEC, Big 10 and Big 12 emerge. Going to be that much harder to be the top one loss team if case only one undefeated, as well.
That might be
However, the chances of that happening are pretty insanely remote. In the history of the BCS we’ve had what, once where there were more than 2 teams from those conferences that were undefeated – that was the USC/Auburn/Oklahoma bit.
Yes, if we’re there we’re probably left out, and honestly? That’s rightfully so. But that schedule is pretty much about par with our schedule in 2010, and we’ll likely be starting top 5 in the polls.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
Three undefeateds seems unlikely, true
But having one undefeated team and multiple 1-loss teams has happened multiple times. SoS could be a significant factor in that case. USC’s about the only team in the Pac-12 guaranteed to be a “quality” opponent next year.
Not sure i'd include a Big 10 team in that troika.
The B1G has lost a bit of credibility over the last couple of seasons of BCS/Jan1 games with its “performance.”

If either USC or Oregon go 13-0
They’re in the Natty. Both teams will start out in the top 5 and should finish in the top 10 even with 2 losses. The rest of the schedule is solid enough, with at least Cal, Stanford or someone else stepping up and getting into the top 25.
I think it’ll help that all of our games will be national next year as well.
It doesn’t nearly matter as much how good our schedule is, as much as the conference as a whole is.
The pecking order to start next season will probably be SEC>Big 12>Pac 12>B1G. It’s safe to assume that USC and Oregon control their own destiny next year.

What's USC's schedule?
I’d like to see their path to the showdown side by side to our path.

That's the previous week, we have Colorado after that. So both come off 7 days as usual
Although they are on the road.

So you're saying we have another bye?

Why would they give the rest of the starting lineup a week off
but not Bennett?

Confused
I’m confused. (No surprise)
I thought with the new Pac-12 we alternated playing USC and UCLA from the South division? Since we played USC in ‘11, shouldn’t we be playing UCLA in ’12?
Also…can we start the countdown clock now? <only stated because I know y’all hate it so much!>
How ’Bout them DUCKS!
We cycle across every 4 years.
We play USC at home, USC at USC, then UCLA at home, UCLA at UCLA —→ then repeat this 4 year cycle every 4 years.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
Thanks for clarifying.
I was scratching my head thinking the same thing. I like the fact we play SC though. Want there to be no question about us being the top team in the conference.

I’m glad to see Fresno State back on the schedule. New coach, who has said in his 1st press conference, he’s bringing a no huddle, spread offense to the scheme of things.
He was the DC coordinator of Texas A & M, though his name escapes me. And I think we play there in ’13

Should get 2 chances...
But first game determines where the rematch is played.
Fun year- staying focused and improving against weak early competition will be the key.

When do the Ducks play Utah and UCLA?
Can someone explain how the North/South scheduling works? I thought that we would NOT play a different pair of South teams each year, on a 3-year cycle so I was expecting to see Utah and UCLA next year. Instead I see we’re playing the same 4 South teams as we did this past year.
It’s on a rotating two-year home and home schedule. So we’ll play the exact same teams in 2012 that we played in 2011, only flip the home team. In 2013, I believe we drop USC and ASU for two years. The schedule should look like this:
2011: @AU, vs. ASU, @ CU, vs USC
2012: vs UA, @ASU, vs CU, @ USC
2013: @UA, vs Utah, @ CU, vs. UCLA
2014: vs UA, @ Utah, vs CU, @ UCLA
