We have The Pick, What about other "plays"?
Kenny Wheaton's interception return for a touchdown in 1994 against Washington is universally known among Oregon and college football fans as simply, "The Pick." This brought up an interesting question in my household tonight: What about other plays in Oregon history? The Run? The Fumble? I ask you, ATQ to fill out this form with your answers, and we may revisit this conversation in the dog days of summer.
The Pass: (My vote= Akili Smith to Pat Johnson in 1997 vs. Washington). Video link
The Run: (My vote= Lamichael James 2009 Civil War) Video link (start at 5:40 mark).
The "Trick Play:" (My Vote= 2000 Holiday Bowl Howry-To-Harrington). Video link
The Special Teams Touchdown: (My vote= 2001 Civil War Keenan Howry punt return). Video link
The Tackle/Defensive Stop: (My vote= The goal line stand @ Arizona in 1995). Video link
The Pick: Duh. Video link
The Fumble: This is a hard one. Ultimately, because we won the game, Wisconsin's late game fumble in the 2012 Rose Bowl over Casey Matthews' forcing Cam Newton to fumble the ball late in the 2011 NCG. Video link
The Kick: (My vote= Jared Siegel 2001 game winner over USC). Sorry Jared, Youtube doesn't like you.
Bonus Category–The Upset: Lots to pick from here, but I'm going with 2007 Michigan because it was the first time anyone had an inkling that Dennis Dixon was really, really good. Video link
Did I miss any categories? Get one wrong? Your voices shall be heard below! H/T to MadMike1951 and Keeerrrttt for the videos.

Absolutely the RB fumble
That play is so unique and iconic(at least to me).
The Matthews play was phenomenal but….yeah you know what happened.

Not sure why I didn't think of that. The 51 yarder in the Civil War still stands out to me though.

No question.
I clicked the youtube link thinking “man, this run is better than the Tennessee run? I don’t remember one from the Civil War but let’s see.”
Then I watched and was severely disappointed by the lack of broken tackles and sideline-to-sideline running. That run against Tennesse was the best thing I’ve seen LMJ do

Yep yep yep
You might be able to say that some of the other fakes (like the fake field goal against the huskies or many of the special teams 2-point conversions) are up there, but this one was just absurdly awesome.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

Nope, this one is definitely the most memorable punt block ever.
EVER! I remember turning off the TV, and walking away, when OK get their last score. Then inexplicably I turned the TV back on just in time to see the onside kick, then the most amazing comeback in history occurred.

Eh
I think that if you’re going to give things nomenclature it has to be because the play was amazing – AND that it was pivotal or representative of something bigger. The trick play (Dixon’s) was great because it represented the utter beatdown of Michigan and the amazing abilities of Dixon, the best Heisman winner of them all. That’s a killer play, but it isn’t like we needed it to beat WSU.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
3 years from now, the Juke is going to be the First, the play that launched the greatest ever Duck's

I can see it now...
It’s 2025 and I’ve just taken over as head-honcho at ATQ. Jared and Dave have retired from their duties as Dave’s 3 kids all attend Woodburn K-12 at the abandoned outlet malls, and Jared is somewhere in the Congo trying to dodge Michigan’s militia government. They saw ATQ through the great annexation of ATQ-South (formerly known as California Golden Blogs, until the Big One hit the state in 2018 and sunk half the state into the Pacific Ocean), and for that we will forever be thankful.

When I think of “The Fumble”, I think of something bad. I would propose it be renamed to “The Strip” or “The Recovery” to promote good feelings.

How about "The Stuff": Oregon @ UCLA, 1995
Far more impressive than the ’95 Arizona, which was just in the 3rd quarter — not exactly “game saving”.
Jaiya Figueras’ stuff of Karim Abdul-Jabbar at the one foot line with no time on the clock at the Rose Bowl was huge. I remember watching this game in the lobby at the Eugene Hilton with about 300 other fans and the place just fucking came apart when that tackle was made.
A week earlier Figueras had the greatest strip-and-score in my Oregon memory. Pretty good two-game stretch for Jaiya.

Not totally a trick play, but the playcall where Terry Obee ran that reverse and scored should be up there.
Things like that.
Also worth discussing, The Catch
can anything really top this one?

Maybe not
but Joey to Samie in the Fiesta Bowl ain’t chopped liver either.
ATQ's #1 fan of WINNING THE ROSE BOWL
Absolutely
Joey → Samie won us the Fiesta (more important game)
Masoli → Maehl → Arizona (2009) got us into the Rose Bowl
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
Admittedly, though
Masoli → Dixon, Masoli → run into endzone were as important, so it doesn’t stand out by itself in that game.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
It'd be Thomas-Maehl for the 2 point no-look conversion in the NCG
if that game hadn’t ended in a 19-19 tie.

If we would have gone on to win the BCSNCG, Maehl’s catch on the 2 point conversion to tie the game would have to be “The Catch.”

One of the other results of the Rose Bowl Game
is that I no longer feel the need to post my auto-response of “I miss Jeff Maehl” to any Maehl reference in these threads. At the mention of Jeff Maehl, I used to be overwhelmed by my feelings of loss. Tuinei’s performance in the Rose Bowl has finally gotten me to a point where I feel we have a solid, reliable, will-catch-it-when-it-absolutely-positively-must-be-caught recveiver. That said receiver has graduated I’m not allowing myself to think too long about. Let’s see how the super-hyped newbies do next season.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
I rewatched the game today
What do you think clicked? Were DT’s passes that much better? Was Tuinei’s catches that much better?

True, but when we did he was nowhere near as sure-handed as he was in the RB
I wasn’t expecting him to be a Woods or a Lee, but he was far from reliable.

There was definitely a huge step up in Tuinei's performance in the RB
He said as much in his post-game interview. He said he had been visualizing himself catching a lot of passes, and doing great all week. No idea, but really, it was a very special performance. I’m very happy for him. Wish he had been this strong all year, but I’m glad his last game was so memorable.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
I don't understand why people are wondering where the hands came from
he’s always been sure-handed, just overshadowed by Jeff “Stick’em” Maehl
"Forget it. If 21 gets behind you, you can play the fight song." --Scott Van Pelt
Tuinei wasn’t sure-handed this year.

"YOU ARE THE KING OF THE AWESOME GUYS, JSHUFELT!!!" - daisyduck
Maybe in a "Sure, he has hands, but he didn't catch anything with them on a consistent basis."
He definitely has talent and came through for us several times when we really needed it over the past year and a half (he was out for part of the 2010 season due to a shoulder injury). I don’t think the question is fair, but I guess if he was such a great receiver, why didn’t we throw to him more? Here’s my point: If Chip Kelly’s system is personnel driven, why would a touted WR come to Oregon if our top WO had only one game over 100 yards all season?
I know we’re a run first offense, but at what point do we start to pass? Is it more of a personnel/match up issue? Does a DB need to sell out for run support?
I’m very excited to see what Kelley, Blackmon and Sumler can do on the field.

And Dixon to Jones vs Michigan in 2007 -- 61 yard pass play
One of the absolute best deep throw pass plays for a TD, just cemented Dixon’s abilities in the minds of everyone around the country watching

Yep, I've still not seen 3 better deep balls thrown in any fb game since
The receivers didn’t even break stride! Amazing accuracy over distance.
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
I know next year
There will be a reason for me to be saying, " I miss LMJ".
Sad to see him go. Yes, I know we have some great up and coming running backs.
But in terms of leadership, ball control, and flat-out talent, I think this equates to
the loss of a game next season.
Yeah, he’s that good.
The Kick
although it was more ‘The Hold’ but Nate Costa’s POW honors (a requirement for getting us to OT in the Arizona Game) and the subsequent extra point stand out to me.
I remember Siegel’s kick, but I think Josh Frankel’s kick (after Joey broke our first string kicker, and the second string guy couldn’t handle the pressure) is better.
You can’t spell anatidaephobia without DAT.
THE FUMBLE!!!! ASU vs UO 10-28-2000. No Fiesta without it
Justin Peele gets stopped on the 1 yard line with us down 7. Next play ASU fumbles. THIS DIRECTLY LEAD TO A WIN AND WAS IMPROBABLE.
Michael Fletcher never called fair catch.
Nice, but the fumble was a year before the Fiesta season.
It kept us in the Rose Bowl race in 2000, was what it did.
That game was insane. Captai Comeback’s legend may not have started there, but it was certainly enhanced.
I've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to my life.
