Chip Kelly rumors: Browns reportedly make Oregon coach top target

Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

Oregon head coach Chip Kelly is the Browns top head coach target, according to a report.

After firing Pat Shurmur on Monday, the Cleveland Browns have apparently set their sights on Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly is the Browns' clear No. 1 choice to replace Shurmur, according to a report from Adam Caplan.

Caplan's report cites two high ranking personnel executives who said Kelly is Cleveland's top target. After reportedly coming close to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year, many have predicted Kelly would make the jump to the NFL this season. Whether or not Kelly would be interested in the Browns' vacant position remains to be seen. Known for his spread offensive attack, Kelly may want a quarterback in place who suits his offensive philosophy better than Cleveland's Brandon Weeden. Kelly is also expected to draw interest from the Philadelphia Eagles and possibly a few NFL other teams.

Interest in Kelly could pick up after Oregon finishes its season by playing in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday. Kelly is 45-7 in four season as the Ducks' head coach including four BCS Bowl bids. If Kelly does leave Oregon, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich is expected to be the leading candidate to replace him.
