Oregon Football Recruiting: Chip Kelly Announces 21 New Ducks in 2012 Class
The moment has arrived Duck fans. After searching for clues as to who has sent in their letters of intent, Chip Kelly is announcing the 2012 recruiting class at 11:30AM PST.
Oregon has announced that 21 high school players have signed with the Ducks, which is exactly what we expected (check our earlier post this morning for some quick analysis). The quality of the class means that it should end up ranked in the 10-20 range from the various recruiting services. Yet, despite the strong class, there wasn't a lot of excitement today. After the early commitments of Bralon Addison and Chance Allen, it was mostly a day for "watching" the fax machine. And while other schools deal with last minute switches, I kind of like how Oregon's classes have been shaping up in recent years, mostly free of drama, with most commits sticking true to their verbal commitments.
Stick around and discuss the recruiting class and Chip's press conference. It will be premium content for GoDucks.tv subscribers, and there are rumors that it will be on ESPNU. If you can't access either, we'll post the important parts in the comments.
Welcome to all the new Ducks! Win The Day!

He has size, power, a wicked juke, lateral quickness. The thing I am most impressed with is his patience, following blockers, and letting the hole develop. Put 20 lbs on him, and let him go.

To be fair, CK can't say a word about Harper-even in the abstract "We still have one more guy..."-until he signs.

Ducks announced signing of 21 recruits. I get the sense that athlete Bryan Harper (3 pm announcement) will be 22nd.
My parents believed in me.
Don't take anything said at a press conference too seriously
CK is not allowed to comment specifically about someone not signed. Also- what would be the benefit of announcing you are expecting one more signee if there is a chance you wouldn’t get him? That is setting up failure. Say this is the class- and your excited then if someone else recruits its gravy. If they don’t, like you said this was the full class.
We have the kid that decommitted from UA coming in this week too...

I count 30 walk ons
of the 108 man roster. With 16 seniors, 3 of those walk ons (if non of the walk ons had a schollie) and 3 leaving early (LMJ, DT, CH13) you have 62 schollies.
That gives Oregon 23 to had out.

CGB was abuzz
because, on top of everything else, Tosh apparently used his inside knowledge of certain Cal players’ transcripts and academic troubles to claim that Cal was too hard and they should go to UW. Basically throwing out confidential academic info to recruits without permission of the athletes or school.
So yeah, Tosh is a snake. Sounds like he found a nice home.

I’m not sure how legit this is. The best sourcing I could see is was in a comment by iVinshe:
“Not exactly a hard confirmation, but
HappyCheerBear is generally known to be trustworthy over at Scout:
I do understand that transcripts of enrolled students were discussed, and that there are recruits prepared to file statements under penalty of perjury that Tosh used these transcripts to suggest Cal was too hard, and that UW would be much easier.
Using a student’s information without authorization by the student in this way is a violation of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. An administrator would be fired immediately for doing what Tosh did. It will be interesting to see what happens to a football coach who used the transcripts of students at a former school to recruit players to his new employer.
It’s on this page: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=166&f=1419&t=8648900&p=2"
Beyond that, further talk of it being “confirmed” and “the conference being aware of it.”

I smell BS from a bitter fan base.
How would that conversation go?
“Wow, Shaqueremy, I know I recruited you at Cal, but I just looked at your junior year report card, and you’re just not smart enough to make it there. You’re better off with me at Washington, where all we care about is getting you eligible.”
“Well, gee, Tosh, you told me when you recruited me at Cal that I’d get plenty of academic assistance, and Mom says Cal’s a better school, and….”
“Yeah, but now I’m serious. Do you know what that word means? Can you say SEE-REE-OUS? I knew you could!”
I've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to my life.
Shaq specifically noted the grad rates at UW when he committed. I don’t know if the transcript info is legit, but it seems like someone was definitely in his ear about academics, and kids not graduating from Cal.
Somewhere, somehow, a Duck is watching you.
by omb on Feb 1, 2012 2:57 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t think you’d have to have someone in your ear about academics to see that the grad rate at uw is higher than it is at Cal.
The question becomes, did Shaq have this information based on nefarious intent, or was it just a consideration? It’s quite a leap to go from there to “Tosh told him he was too stupid to go to Cal.”
There is, of course, the possibility that Tosh is indeed that big of a douchbag.
I've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to my life.
Would you treat your alma mater the way Tosh did his?
That alone puts him in the douchbag category in my eyes.
This is part of why I just can't get on board the *uck *ucks bus.
I’ll admit I don’t like the recent on field beatings any more than the next Husky, but often enough when somne of you choose to let down the sarc screen you offer commentary that is not only serious and reasonable, but that also presents a basis in facts & logic.
and even then, sometimes a chippy line.

With all the legit quarterbacks we are getting,
there won’t be any reason to use him as a QB except in trick plays. And we get the ball into playmaker’s hands in so many different ways (hand offs, pitches, throwing, reverses, etc.) that keeping a player on the field who is a real threat to run AND throw will only make it easier for him (or any of our weapons) to make plays.

Our game against them this last year
proves this point so emphatically. They just looked so slow…especially by the second half.
If they didn’t add any speed this year, well as you say, they’ll be good again – but they are now slow and Luckless.
ATQ's #1 fan of WINNING THE ROSE BOWL
Their offensive line had some top notch talent this year, but also some glaring weakness. If they can shore up those holes, they will be much less susceptible to defensive attacks like ours.
This is a great continuation of momentum for them, and they’ll likely stay as the second best team in the Pac-12 north if they continue to get these players, but they really need to improve defensively to be able to handle an attack like ours.

They have one amazing class for next season.
It's not that they drop the standards, as I understand it.
It’s just that they have this giant pool of academic talent that wants to get in, right? All of whom are above the required academic standards. Say they have 10,000 applicants for 1000 entries in the freshman class. If you aren’t on an athletic scholarship, you’re competing against those 10,000 applicants.
If you’re a recruit, guess what? You don’t have to worry about being smarter than 90% of the applicants.
The average Stanford freshman football player is not as high on the IQ/SAT/ACT scales as the average Stanford freshman. But he still has to be able to get into Stanford.

"Forget it. If 21 gets behind you, you can play the fight song." --Scott Van Pelt
The Recruiting class rankings are fun to look at, but are ultimately irrelevant.
Two things leap out at me
1) it is really up to the coaches to utilize the players they have. There is a reason why schools like Boise State, love them or hate them, recruits three star players year after year and is consistently a top ten team. At the same time, schools like Florida pull in four and five star talent every year and as of late, are not that good. Did the talent in Florida just drop off the map when Tebow and Meyer left? No, a sub-par coach came in and could not properly utilize the talent he had on the roster.
On that note, I would trust the judgement of Chip Kelly on the recruiting path he and his staff took more than the judgement the media has passed on it. Chip is only a soon to be fourth year head coach at Oregon, but he was the OC for a few season prior and had his hands in the recruiting classes then too, same with Nick Allioti. This coaching staff is two years removed from playing one hell of a NC game against a $180k pro bowl QB and are fresh off a Rose Bowl victory with 2, 3, 4, and very few 5 star talents on the roster. As far as I am concerned Chip Kelly is the best coach in the Pac-12 by a landslide and top 3 in the nation, so I’ll take him and the number 20 recruiting class over ANY other coach in the conference no matter what number the media assigns them.
Chip identified what he deemed to be weaknesses on the roster and fixed them and ultimately gave a team brimming with speed and talent, a huge influx of talent. Overall it was a good day for the University of Oregon football program.
There is a reason why schools like Boise State, love them or hate them, recruits three star players year after year and is consistently a top ten team
Coaching and recruiting are not the reason why. Just saying.
The All I Saw Was Green Blog, that's it I'm telling SBN legal
that's outright BS.
a soft schedule gets you wins, not makes you a great time. I’m not a Boise St. fan by a longshot, but that team took the SEC east champion and beat them pretty good.
AND they did it with 2-4 star recruits against the 4-5 that Georgia. Georgia may have had better recruits, Boise St had the better players.
Week 1 is such a crapshoot, I don't put nearly as much stock in fBSU's win over Georgia
as I do their loss to TCU, or their mediocre performances against Air Force or Wyoming. Then again, I’m a tremendous hater.
Addicted to Quack
Death before chastity!
the point of that post was not to debate whether BSU is overrated
it was to point out that recruiting still takes second place to coaching. TCU is another good example. Andy Dalton, a qb who just represented the AFC in the pro bowl as a rookie, was a lowly three star commit to TCU in ‘06, Ryan Clady, was a 2 star product in ’04
I’m not debating whether BSU or TCU are overrated, what I am saying is, just because the media or a website says a kid is 5 stars doesn’t make them the best. They are very clearly wrong much of the time, and GREAT COACHING, which the Ducks, Horned Frogs, and Broncos have is more of a difference than a website saying a kid is great.
Intangables also play a role. Football is such a game of adrenalin and emotion and a really great coach knows how to get his players fired up, just by being in his presence. I suspect this is one of Mike Bellotti’s deficiencies, and one of Les Mile’s assets (as well as CK’s). Pete Carroll is also very good at it.
On the other hand, the lack of personal charisma can be offset if people admire and believe in someone to a high degree. That was the case with my coach in high school and in the political realm, it’s evidenced in the near fanatical support for Ron Paul by his young followers.
If ya can't get your Dick Enright, get your Dick Harter!
and my thoughts are that Kelly has both
His athletes want to play for him and believe in him, and they also believe in the system. He can get the players to play at a high level and to develop them into better athletes than they were when they came to Oregon.
and you are right
and all your Pac-12 cousins know it
No one is going to argue with you (certainly not me)
that coaching is important in the end game of the production of player. Look at Tosh at Uw, how successful were all those 4 and 5 star recruits he was pulling into 7-5 Cal? But let’s not pretend that fBSU is the epitome of taking lower level talent and making them exceptional.
When you play the Sisters of the Blind all season and only schedule your tough games for the first and last games of the year when you have plenty of time to prepare, your end result record is going to constantly look better than what you actually are (I won’t even get into the argument about how if Kelly or any other Pac coach got 10 games of 1+ quarter per game to play his back ups how well they’d look later in their careers).
This argument that getting 5 stars by your name in high school isn’t deserved is somewhat antiquated and doesn’t account for the number of trained individuals that scout and rate these players on an annual basis. There definitely is a balance between getting a team of 5* players and getting a team of talented players that are coachable, I agree.
But let’s not use the exception that is fBSU to try and disprove the rule.
The All I Saw Was Green Blog, that's it I'm telling SBN legal
I actually will disagree a little bit. You need great coaching ability, but recruiting sets your ceiling. Oregon State thrived on the diamonds-in-the-rough. End results? No bowl games 2 years in a row after being a multi-year Rose Bowl contender. The coaches didn’t change. Riley just hasn’t been able to consistently recruit at a high enough level.
What has Alabama’s recruiting levels been like? According to Rivals:
2007, #10
2008, #1
2009, #1
2010, #5
2011, #1
2012, #1
Should anyone actually be shocked that they’ve won the BCS NC twice, and will likely continue to be favored to do so over the next few years? No. They’ve been very competitive in the best conference in the nation, and that will continue. No BSU or TCU team can say that.
They are very clearly wrong much of the time
They are also very clearly right much of the time. It’s a fickle system.
