After reading a recent post about who to root for, I completely agreed with a Matt Daddy comment. Never root for the huskies. Ever. 2008 was the greatest thing that ever happened to them. There isn't a team I dislike more than them. So when this game comes around every year, it is a weeklong celebration for me. Luckily, the majority of my fraternity brothers, and greek life for that matter, also share this passion and understanding of the rivalry. Then there are the freshmen and sophomores who are clueless that we even have a rivalry with washington. I constantly find myself explaining to them that OSU is just our little brother that we enjoy picking on, and washington was the bully that would publicly embarrass you and stuff you in your locker until he grew up to be a WalMart greeter. Ok, so maybe it was the ASU grads who became the WalMart greeters. Still, this was the guy you hated with every fiber of your being until you grew bigger than him and started dishing out the payback.
I understand (and thoroughly enjoy) that we have owned eight consecutive games in this rivalry and that is a big reason why so many younger students don't realize there is a rivalry. It has been too one sided for them to experience the true nature of this game. I want us to continue owning this rivalry and obtain the full decade of dominance, but our new students need proper huck the fuskies education. I don't want the student section to gradually become complacent with this game. It should be our loudest game every time.
Last year when this game came around, someone (maybe Takimoto?) wrote an article about the history of this rivalry and I spread it around facebook like a virus. When Gameday set up in front of Lillis for the ASU game, some friends and I got front row with a "huck the fuskies" sign. Unfortunately it was taken away about halfway through the show. I just want these students to feel the passion that surrounds a bitter rivalry, especially this rivalry. Any ideas for re-ignighting the fire for new generations?
