Announcing a newly produced DVD
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the University of Oregon's
1962 NCAA Championship Track & Field Team
"THEY WERE TIGERS"
THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON'S
1962 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
TRACK & FIELD TEAM
In June of 1962, for the first time ever, the University of Oregon won the NCAA Track & Field championship, and did so in a run-away fashion. It is remembered as one of the most powerful track & field teams in college history. Fifty years later few records of the meet have survived, but thanks to Patrick O'Malley, an eleven-year-old meet attendee who noted in his surviving souvenir program the times, heights and distances for all place finishers, this landmark meet has been reconstructed in this video event-by-event.
Adding their personal perspectives are eight members of that championship team: Jerry Tarr, Dyrol Burleson, Les Tipton, Clayton Steinke, Mike Lehner, Archie San Romanie Jr., Jim Puckett and Sig Ohleman. As an Oregon student and runner, producer-director Clark Santee was active with the Duck track team from 1959 through 1963. As such he witnessed the '62 meet and its related events first hand.
Narrator: George Lauris - Oregon Class of ‘65 ~ Announcer: Paul Swangaurd - Oregon Class of ‘99
