The Rich Get Richer: Dana Altman Adds Houston Transfer Joseph Young

Joseph Young averaged 18 ppg last year for Houston. - US PRESSWIRE

Young will petition the NCAA to be eligible right away after his father was let go at Houston.

Huge news today as Matt Prehm of Duck Territory is reporting that the Ducks have added Houston transfer Joseph Young.

Young is a 6'3 shooting guard out of Houston, Texas who averaged 18 points per game last year for the Cougars while shooting 87.5% from the free throw line and 42% from beyond the arc. By comparison, EJ Singler led all rotation players for Oregon last year in 3-point percentage by shooting 35.9%.

A four star recruit out of high school, Young chose Houston after originally signing with Providence so that he could play for the coaching staff his father was on. His father, Michael, was a member of Houston's famed "Phi Slama Jama" team, which included eventual Hall of Fame players Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

He has one year two years of eligibility remaining and will petition the NCAA to be eligible right away as a red shirt junior after his father refused reassignment on Houston's coaching staff and was let go. Matt Prehm reports that the family is optimistic his waiver request will be granted. If his waiver is not granted, Young will sit out one year and play for the Ducks as a senior during the 2014-15 season.

Young is a HUGE pickup for Oregon and joins a team that is already loaded with talent. The big questions going forward will be how well Altman can integrate so many new players into his rotation but given his success since arriving at Oregon there is every reason to be very excited about the Ducks basketball team heading into the 2013-14 season.
