There are those who listen to music and those who LOVE music. As a lover of music it pains me to sit around listening to popular radio, as within the hour I have to FIGURATIVELY destroy my own ears, or LITERALLY turn off the radio. Since we have a lot of musicians on ATQ (also those who have majored in music), this week the FAWSOTA is focusing on what I've got going on my iPhone and what you might be listening to.
Arctic Monkeys: AM
The fifth and newest release from my fellow Englishman is literally going around my head all day. The Sheffield quartet, for those of you unaware, set the record for most albums sold in a week with their DEBUT album back in 2005. This album continues the evolving nature of their music, but if you're a fan of The Black Keys or The Strokes, give the Arctic Monkeys a listen.
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out and Time Further Out
Any fan of Jazz must have these two albums in their repertoire. Dave Brubeck fools around with time signatures in these two albums, creating some of the most unique beats and rhytmns you'll ever hear. One of the popular notions about music is that if you're having a good time the music will reflect that, these albums are no exception.
Kendrick Lamar: good kid, m.A.A.d city
I said in the intro I wasn't a fan of most popular music, well this is the exception to the rule. Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest storytellers I have ever listened too, a list that includes both MCs and folk artists. Listening to the album, which I can understand some of you would not want to listen to, his capacity to change styles and truly put us in the scene is outstanding. If you are an aficionado of Hip Hop, and you for some reason haven't picked this up, pick it up.
Amy Winehouse: Frank
The predecessor to her Back to Black album, Frank shows of her Blues, R&B and Jazz abilities much more than the slightly "Pop"-ier album for which she is known for. With a mixture of Hip Hop beats and standard jazz influences, this is one of my favourite albums to listen to.
What other music I'm listening to:
- Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience
- Jack Johnson: My rainy day go-to
- Lorde: This New-Zealand native is eerily catchy
- Jamie Cullum
- Ennio Morricone
- Gin Wigmore
- Ludovico Einaudi
Please tell us all what you're listening to in the comments.
