ATQ Spring Game BBQ and Tailgate is Tomorrow!

I've received quite the education on things like liquor liability insurance, site plans, and permit applications. Sorry for the delay in getting more concrete information out there but here's the plan for the tailgate.

Location: Google Map

Time

We're going to start setting up around 9am and you're welcome to come that early but the parking lot may not open until much later. Keep this in mind considering the parking situation.

There will be cars there, probably 3 of them, but that doesn't mean you can park there. In fact, you absolutely can't park there. You need to find another approved lot and make your way over to the tailgate. Parking specifically at the tailgate location requires a permit through the City of Eugene and if you don't have one, you'll probably get a ticket. You can park in the normal Autzen Stadium lot or any other approved parking areas. Just don't get excited because you see cars parked and think you can drive right up.

Food and Drink

Currently planning on providing a variety of meat products, generally brats and burgers and associated toppings. If you want to grill something specific to your dietary needs, bring it along and we'll throw it on the grill. We'll have various snacks and things as well as some drinks. Bring your favorite adult beverage and throw it on the pile for folks to try. Just a word of caution. I'm not bringing any ingredients to fashion the ATQ official Spring Game drink, Dr. Delight. If you want that, I'm sure there is SOMEONE out there that will assist you.

Feel free to bring a side, some chips, or whatever you like

Chairs

We'll have a few chairs but you're welcome to bring your own. We have essentially the whole area south of the stadium but the chairs need to stay at the main tailgate site.

Questions?

Pop me an email through my profile and I'll do my best to answer sometime this evening. We're expecting quite the turnout so try not to overwhelm the cook. Hope to see everyone out there!

ATQ Spring Game BBQ and Tailgate: Location

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that the ATQ Spring Game BBQ and Tailgate is going on this Saturday for the Oregon Ducks Spring Game! I'm happy to report that we have a location all picked out where we can meet up, have some laughs, make fun of Dave and otherwise have a grand old time. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so here. The location is south of Autzen Stadium, near the Eugene Science Factory in what is officially Alton Baker Park.

Google Map

We're still finalizing the details but that's where you should plan on showing up. Remember, there is no parking at that specific location (even if it looks like there are cars there). You'll need to park in an approved lot and migrate over! Look for more details and a nice summary later in the week.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

ATQ Spring Game BBQ and Tailgate

It’s that time of the year where the long, frosty winter has started to recede back to where it came from and the glorious feelings of summer begin to break through. Spring football is here and it couldn’t come soon enough. When you have spring football, you also get a Spring Game and that can only mean one thing... ATQ Spring Game BBQ and Tailgate!

We had a wonderful turnout last year and we want to make it even bigger and better this year! Bring you friends and family to the Oregon Ducks Spring Game and tailgate with your favorite Internet buddies. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you may even find out the secret recipe for Dr. Delight!

When: April 30th @ 10am (game starts at 1pm)
Where: Autzen Stadium (exact location TBD)

Not only will we bribe you with food, you’ll get to give that Matt Daddy guy a piece of your mind. Fun and excitement to be had! Who knows, there might be a special guest or two looking for free food. If you’re interested in coming, please let us know using the form after the jump.

World Cup Open Thread: USA vs. Ghana

11:30am PDT // ABC // Gamecast

The USA will take on Ghana in the first round of the knockout rounds after Landon Donovan's late game heroics lifted the good guys past the group stage. To get people fired up, I thought it would be good to post a video of some reactions around the world to the US victory over Algeria.Feel free to talk about the game here.

World Cup Open Thread: England vs USA

Who: England vs. USA
When: 11:30am PDT on ABC
Why: World Cup

This is David vs. Goliath, the Clippers vs. the Lakers, Appalachian State vs Michigan at the Big House, Luke Skywalker vs. the Death Star. They've taxed us without representation. They have bad teeth and accents we can't understand. They invade our televisions with shows that don't make any sense and force us to watch them because we can become "cultured". Consider these facts

  1. When was the US last taken over by someone? Anyone?
  2. Victoria Beckham is NOT a celebrity here.
  3. "Pants" are not underwear.
  4. We don't measure things in stones. Stones can be all different weights and sizes.
  5. Baseball is not called "Rounders". Please get it straight. Also, it's soccer not football

ATQ's Spring Game Challenge

I'm looking very much forward to the spring game -- especially the pre-game tailgate to hang out with many old ATQ friends, and hopefully many more that we'll be meeting for the first time (Remember, ATQ's tailgate will start at 8:30 AM and keep going right up until gametime).  While it will be a fun experience as usual (and those of you that missed out on ATQ's football season tailgates missed out on a treat), we also have a chance to do a great deal of good while we're there.

We're not going to make it a regular point to ask for charity here at ATQ (though please give to the Miracle Wolf fund.  Then give again), but the spring game provides too good an opportunity to pass up.  As you know, admission to the spring game is three cans of food that will be donated to Food for Lane County.  If three cans is what your means will support, then thank you for your generous donation.  But if you can support more than that, please do so.  Nowhere does it say we can't give more than three.  My challenge is for ATQ to donate as much as we possibly can.

There are two reasons why this is so important to me:

1.  Being a teacher, I know how important summer food donations are to kids.  For many poor children, their school breakfasts and lunches are the main (and sometimes only) sources of food that these kids get.  Once school gets out, this goes away for a lot of kids.  As most food box donations go to families with children, we can help alleviate hunger in this population.

2.  My family had to get food boxes on many occasions growing up, so I know how important they are.

Also, a few things to keep in mind with your food donations:

  • Lots of people will reach into their cupboard and grab the can of cream corn that they accidentally bought, or the can of lima beans that have been sitting there for two years.  While you should donate those items you aren't going to use, remember that everyone else is going to do that as well.  And if you don't like lima beans and cream corn, there are a lot of kids that don't either.  So please donate you undesirable items, just don't forget to put in some tasty items as well.  The kids do like something fun now and again.
  • I have a few undesirables that I'll be donating, but I'll also go to the store with ten bucks, which I basically see as a cheap ticket to the game.  I'll get a bag of food with the ten dollars and donate that.  You'll be shocked what you can buy with ten dollars, especially if you look for sales on store brand items.
  • But keep in mind nutrition as well.  I've seen on food drives in the past a lot of people go to the store with good intentions, only to load up on Ramen and Mac n' Cheese because they're cheap and taste pretty good.  That may be true, but they don't do a lot for you nutritionally.  Best bets for non-perishable food items are canned fruits, soups, and meats such as tuna, and dry staples such as pasta, beans, rice, and flour.  Other great items include cereal, raisins, peanut butter, and jelly.

So this is my challenge.  If everyone could just take five or ten bucks and take a few extra minutes on their next shopping trip, we could get a lot of nutritous food out to some needy kids this summer.

Nobody will be counting or keeping score.  Nobody will be judged.  But I offer this as my personal challenge to every Duck fan:  lets get as much food out to the community as we possibly can.

USA vs Canada Olympic Hockey Open Thread

The USA is looking for it's first gold medal at the Olympics since the Miracle on Ice year in 1980. Even though Canada lost to the US earlier, they are the odds on favorites to prove that loss was a fluke and capture another gold medal. I know we have some Canadian readers but I would be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to say Go USA!
