Why Tom Hansen Will Cost Oregon or Arizona State a National Championship
Update [2007-10-29 20:24:11 by Dave]: : A last minute deal was announced today. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. But don't think that this issue is over. The underlying issues are still a big problem, and aren't going away anytime soon.
The biggest game in the country will take place in Eugene this weekend. A clash of the titans. #4 vs. #6--in November, no less. There will be not just conference championship--but national championship implications. On one side you will see a legitimate Heisman trophy contender lead the nation's number two offense. On the other, you will see a surprise undefeated, led by one of the nation's star coaches, who have been, thus far one of the most balaced teams in the country. The winner controls their own destiny for the Rose Bowl, and has a legitimate shot to play in New Orleans. College GameDay will be there. It is the kind of late season game that college football fans dream of.
Its such a shame that they won't be able to see it.
That's right football fans, there will be no national coverage of the game. Unless you are one of the lucky few who get Comcast SportsNet Northwest or Fox Sports Arizona, you will not be seeing this game.
That's right, the geniuses at Pac-10 headquarters have an awesome national slate for you instead. On ABC, you can see Oregon State take on USC. For the Fox Sports national game, you will see a pathetic Washington State team take on a taking Cal team. The two best teams in the conference? The BCS contenders? The national title contenders? Nowhere to be found.
You see, ABC and Fox Sports chose their matchups for this weekend before the season started, when they thought that SC and Cal would be the leagues best teams. No problem, right? Surely in a circumstance like this, one that is clearly in the best interest of the league, one of these games could be switched? Nope. Because these schools "have already been promised TV money, and it wouldn't be fair to not give them that." So the Pac-10 is not going to give fans the best possible product.
What's worse? Polls and Heisman awards are all about exposure. Bigger names, names that are seen more get more votes in the polls. Heismans are won on moments. When a player steps up in a big game for the whole world to see.
Its a big game, but no one will see.
What makes this whole thing ridiculous is what's riding on it. The lack of exposure could cost Dennis Dixon a Heisman Trophy. Even worse: it could cost Arizona State or Oregon a national championship.
The Pac-10's TV contract is beyond bad. There are two, or if we are lucky, three "national" games. One is the ABC game. That will be shown regionally. One or two will be on Fox Sports, like last week's USC game. Those are often pre-empted in many markets for local baseball, basketball, and hockey. Occasionally, we will have a "national" game on Versus. Who the hell gets Versus?
Why do we have Fox Sports over ESPN? Especially when ESPN has several networks, that can allow for multiple games from the same conference on at the same time IN EVERY CABLE AND SATELLITE HOUSEHOLD IN THE NATION? Becuase Fox Sports will show more volleyball and softball, that's why. Yes, that is seriously the reason that the Pac-10 gives--volleyball and freaking softball.
If that's not bad enough, a lot of game aren't even shown locally. See, the Pac-10 has "exclusivity." Meaning that if a "national" game is on (and, for reasons stated above, the "national" is highly dubious), no other Pac-10 games can be shown at that time, not even in the town of the college. Even though Oregon does a broadcast for all its games, we had to see the Stanford and Washington State games on tape delay due to this ridiculous rule.
We are the Conference of Champions. We are the top all around athletic conference in the nation. We encompass more major television markets than any conference in America.
Yet, the WAC has a better TV contract.
The leadership in charge of this conference is a total joke. There is a reason that East Coast Bias exists--and its because nobody east of Arizona ever sees our games. It is beyond time for the current regime to go. I don't know how a woefully inadequate Tom Hansen has managed to keep his job for so long, but yesterday is not soon enough to fire him. We need somebody with vision. Somebody who will not let our great conference struggle for even adequate regional coverage.
Sadly, that isn't going to happen. And it could cost us big.
GO DUCKS!!!

Contract
I absolutely apologize for bring SEC propaganda to your board, but like you said, this decision is on a national level. East coast people want to see if Dixon or ASU is legit, and the one we all saw, Oregon lost to Cal.
Also, by "promised TV money", does that mean the contract money is not spread evenly?

forehead smacking idiocy
Whether or not it's a question of "the best product" - the game may or may not be good - it's the most relevant game of the week for the conference. There's no excuse for not airing it.
FWIW, I do get Versus, not that it made me any happier to see the Stanford game.
About the only way that I'm likely to see this is if the local Nationals / Orioles channel (don't ask) picks up the Comcast Sports feed, which they sometimes do.)

For now, Saturday's college football game between No. 4 Arizona State and No. 5 Oregon -- in the BCS standings -- is only slated to get local TV coverage. But spokesman Mike Humes said ABC/ESPN will ask the Pacific-10 Conference today to let it add that game, likely for ESPN or ESPN2. ABC can sometimes add Pac-10 games 12 or six days in advance, Humes says, but needs to pick prime-time games before the season -- and picked Saturday's prime-time Oregon State-Southern California and UCLA at Arizona's Saturday afternoon homecoming. ... hmmm interesting game afoot here if...
While I agree Hansen has been a disaster for the PAC--I do think that the title of the threadstarter is a little overdramatic--the winner of ASU/UO will likely jump to #2 in the BCS mostly thanks to the computers strength of schedule--and certainly if either team wins out they will qualify for the MNC game--ASU would certainly jump to #1 based on SOS.

Also, I don't think the winner of the game will go up to #2 without losses. The standings are becoming entrenched enough. ASU has a shot because they are undefeated, but Oregon does not. If ASU wins, they will jump BC for sure.

Nice
As for the BCS, I think Oregon would need more help than ASU if they were to win the game this weekend. As a one loss team, I am not sure they would jump ahead of undefeated OSU or BC. And, in the human polls, I don't think Oregon would jump LSU...
In my opinion, ASU would (deservedly so) make it to the top 2 by going undefeated with wins over Oregon, USC and UCLA -- regardless of how OSU, BC and LSU finish.

Moseley confirms
Also, just now noticed the issues going on with Ryan Perilloux in Louisiana. If it were to lead to him being let go, any thoughts on a) would you be willing to take on such a talented yet troubled player and b) would it be worth it to our program since we'll be opening spring practices with at least 6 QBs? I think he'd have to sit a year as well.

Whoa...
The reason why we could think that two top 10 teams would not be on national TV is because - THEY WEREN'T GOING TO BE ON NATIONAL TV.
Even if Oregon collapses and loses to Arizona St, it is still good coverage. This game getting televised is the only chance that either team will be able to move forward, not just that, but this is the best opportunity the Pac-10 has to get two teams in the BCS bowl games.
What if Boston College didn't play their last game on nationally televised station? There is no WAY Matt Ryan would have received as much of a Heisman hype as he did.
The head scratching thing is that the games that were televised were about as important to the Pac-10 and national championship as the color of Lee Corso's socks tomorrow morning. (No offense intended to those teams, or Lee Corso's socks.)

you must have been born in Oregon
I can't even believe I am replying to this, but for those of you arm chair quarterbacks from the lumber mills... these games are picked 4-5 months in advance by tv programmers who pick the games off of last year's finish and this year's projections, in June(june 20th to be exact). In June, the Oregon vs.ASU did not look like a 4 vs. 6 game. You are lucky it was elevated to FSN from Versus (both not in HD, but don't get me started).
TV markets rule. Did you know Los Angeles is the number two market in the country? Have you used this new app called google maps? USC is in LA... And when USC is in the top ten in post season and preseason poles the executives at the networks follow them. If you are not playing USC then you will go down the network ladder.
I think there are a lot of D-1 schools that would love to have GameDay on their campus once, let alone twice. Oregon will get a lot of love this weekend and hopefully ESPN will invite Dixon or Stewart to the post game set for a chat. Last time, DeSean Jackson, was on the set late into the night. Did ABC carry that game nationally or regionally? Remember when Tedford dropped 31 points on you after four turnovers in the fourth quarter? Come on guy, Oregon is a big time program, start acting like it. You don't live in Corvallis.

Colorado native, but thanks.
UCLA at ARIZONA, 12:30 MST (ABC)
ARIZONA STATE at OREGON, 12:30 PDT
WSU at CALIFORNIA, 7:00 PDT (FSN)
OSU at USC, 5:00 PDT (ABC or ESPN or ESPN2)
WASHINGTON at STANFORD, 12:30 PDT
If I there in June 20th, I'd pick Arizona St. @ Oregon, WSU @ California, or OSU @ USC.
Arizona St. also wasn't a big surprise this year, the most shocking thing was them beating Cal.
It also isn't just this ONE game. It's been ridiculous on how bad Tom Hansen has been for the Pac-10. Big games are getting played, and they aren't even scheduled to be shown live. Unproven teams get picked over a more qualified Pac-10 team for a bowl game. The thickheadedness of not even budging for a playoff system. This is the stuff he's suppose to be fighting for. Instead, he sees the Pac-10 schedule on June 20th, and throws an ABC dart, ESPN dart, and an FSN dart.
And if Oregon is a big time program (Which I agree that it is), then why aren't they getting better scheduled coverage? It's bullshit.
Also, if you don't believe that the commissioners of other conferences don't wheel and deal for better coverage in the middle of the season, that's pretty silly. Of course they do! That's why the SEC gets good games virtually every week, and why you really only see Ohio St play any game. ESPN had to ask to get the Arizona St. Oregon game. Tom Hansen should have been working on that 3 weeks ago.

How much does Hansen love ESPN right now?
"The Pac-10 is grateful for the cooperation of FSN and ESPN to allow the Arizona State-Oregon game to be shown to a national audience," said Commissioner Tom Hansen. "They have proven to be great partners and the college football fans across the nation will be the winner."
Darn right the Pac-10 is grateful. Tom, you should be grovelling to the powers that be at ESPN, thanking them profusely that they gave you an out this week from your RIDICULOUS TV contract. Nothing like the worldwide leader to bail out your worthless behind.
Can we get a "Herbstreit for Pac-10 Commissioner" sign at GameDay?

And go get all your buddies to do the same. I have personally spoken with Tom Hansen (7 years ago for a graduate school project) and can tell you that we had to check his pulse 3-4 times in the course of our interview. It is unfathomable that he is at the head of the most storied and successful athletic conference in the nation. Please act so that we can move on to discussing more relevant topics.
