A Night of Mourning, but a Reason for Optimism
I'm really not quite sure what to say. The game tonight is beyond words. That was not the Oregon Ducks that lost to Arizona. That was something unrecognizable. We came into this season as deep as any team in the nation at the skill positions. Yet, somehow, the injuries kept mounting and mounting, and finally they just could not be overcome.
Despite what some whiners out there will say, this season is not over. There is a lot to play for. There is a possible Rose Bowl and conference championship. There is a Civil War. And how long has it been since we've won a bowl game? All those are still possible. And I will get to that. But first I need to vent. I'll be over it after tonight, but I think that for one night we get to mourn.
First off, let me be forthright. Arizona is a crap team. And I have no problem saying that. We lost to a crap team. It happens. I can live with that. And if the voters want to plummet us to the ends of the Earth for losing to a crap team, I'm fine with that. If Dixon doesn't get hurt, we roll over them. But the national pundits will try to use this as yet another excuse for Pac-10 weakness, yada, yada, yada. We all know that's a bunch of crap. And that's all that matters. Just know that for the last four games, we had the privilege of watching the best team in the country. I really, truly belive that. And losing a game with our second string offense isn't going to sour that for me.
And I just have to what if just one time. What if Paysinger, Johnson, Colvin, Dixon, Tuitele, and Bacon had all stayed healthy? The only game we saw that was the Michigan game. What if.........
Obviously, the Dixon injury really hurt. But I was really disheartened with the way our team responded to that injury. They were just in a daze in the first half, and Arizona was rolling us. Its understandable. The emotions of losing your leader are really tough. But, if the defense plays like themselves even a little, this game still has a different outcome.
Even with the injury, this game was there to be won. There are three things that strike as really pivotal to this game:
- Dropped passes. We knew that a dropped pass would kill us eventually, but we figured it would be Jaison Williams. Actually, Derrick Jones' drop in the end zone that turned into an interception was huge. If we score right there to go up 15-0, the game is over. But, as would happen all night, UA caught a lucky break.
- Brady Leaf. I don't want to imply that it was his fault we lost (although it was a very poorly QB'd game), but why in the world was he still in? He was injured, playing abysmally, and had absolutely nothing more to give. With his injury, he was even less mobile than normal, and couldn't throw a ball further than six yards. I know that putting in Roper may or may not have worked, but Leaf clearly wasn't working, and we had three quarters of evidence to prove that. Roper may have failed miserably, but given the situation, he should have had a chance.
- The Ageyman fumble on the punt fake was brutal. Why he decided to leap, I'll never know.
The truth is, there is still an unbelievable amount to play for. We haven't won a bowl game since 2001. We haven't won a Rose Bowl since 1917. And the Beavers are the reigning Civil War champions. We still have a chance to do all of those things this year. We'll need USC's help next week to get to the Rose Bowl, but other than that, we control the other two. The true heart of a champion is determined by how they respond to adversity. Our team was just punched in the mouth. Are they going to just lie down, or are they going to keep fighting?
Obviously, concern #1 is the health of Dennis Dixon and Jonathan Stewart. Even if Dixon hasn't suffered the worst (please, God), there is no way that he plays next week. Which likely means another week of Brady Leaf. As someone commented, I can't believe that they didn't have a better contingency plan for this scenario. The offense was absolutely woeful. Chip--you've got a week to figure it out. Get something done.
As for Stewart, I really know nothing about his injury status (please, God). Let's just pray for the best. And I forgot, Jaison Williams looked a bit injured at the end. Lets hope he's okay as well.
Two regular season games left. I want them to be memorable. I want to drive the stake in the heart of Karl Dorrell. I want to reclaim Civil War victory. But, most importantly, I want it to end positively for the kids who play on this team. Regardless of this game, this is my favorite Duck team ever. More so than 2001. More so than 1994. And, unlike those fair-weather fans who are proclaiming the season over, I still believe that they have something special in them. They deserve to go out as champions, if not of the nation, then of the Civil War, the conference, and the Rose Bowl.
The marathon is not over yet. We may have stumbled and lost a chance at the gold, but the silver is still there for the taking.
GO DUCKS!!!
--Dave
PS As much as I am trying to be optimistic, as the night wears on, its tough not to be pretty devistated by this. I just can't get over the fact that it was a shell of the real Ducks that we saw out there. And it really tells you how special Dennis is that he was able to mask the other injuries so well. I mean everything I said about the optimism, and everything that there still is to play for. But, damn. This one hurts. Like I said, one night of mourning.
PPS And why did it have to be Arizona? Is there a bigger jackass in college football than Mike Stoops (except maybe Bob?).

My reactions
- Wow, I can't believe how much our receivers (what's left of them) and our O-line have benefited from Dixon's mobility. Leaf wasn't getting a ton of time, all of a sudden the sideline rush plays for stew were being stopped, and the receivers didn't very look open often (though a half way decent QB could have gotten more 1st downs). Were opponents putting two spies on Dixon and all of a sudden they're free to run the field? although had leaf been able to trough some accurate screen passes it might have slowed down that pass rugh
- I can only come up with two reasons for Roper not going in, a) maybe he has been awful in practice - like still doesn't know the plays bad b) Belotti decided this was Leafs senior year and its his game to loose, no matter what.

Sorry about the game...
It's surprising how critical Dixon is (was?) to the Ducks' offense. Leaf is obviously slow and fairly inept; Dixon electric and explosive and forced teams to cover an offense that is (was?) unique.
The injury looked like a season-ender on TV, despite Dixon walking on it afterwards. The non-hit planting injuries like that seem to be pretty serious, in general. Hope for the best, but expect the worst...
It will be interesting if an NFL team takes a chance on Dixon. He's obviously a great athlete, but what pro position does he play? A conversion project to wide out? Or to defensive back? Or a backup for whatever team takes a chance on Michael Vick's comeback, looking to install that particular offense? He seems so skinny, like he wouldn't last in the pro game. It will be interesting to see.
Anyway, hang in there Duck fans. 3 losses isn't bad! (tee hee)

Thanks, Dave
If there is a silver lining in this game I think the defense did a marvelous job of holding AZ for as long as they did. The only reason I could have seen for keeping Roper out of the game was protecting his redshirt status, but?
Injuries are a fact of life in football. I feel sometimes teams don't always prepare for not only the physical, but the psychological impact of lost players. I mean, were it not for the pick and the punt return Oregon would have been right in this game. But they truly seemed let down after Dennis left the game. And champions find ways to deal with adversity in the short-term and the long-term.
I feel for Brady, for Jonathan, for the entire team. Too bad the game wasn't played on astroturf.
Go Ducks! Beat the Bruins and the Beavs!

What a craptacular suckathon
Well, at least we don't have to watch polls anymore.
Next time we have a top-level quarterback and a toward-the end-of-season game at Arizona, can we just bench him for the first 3 quarters?

I'm sorry Dave
I thought your assessment about dropped passes was accurate. Leaf may not have had a good outing but the guys at the other end didn't help him either. Hang on to a couple of those and maybe there's some light at the end of the tunnel.
Last thought: Show me another highly-ranked college team that loses, what...it's top four skill players? Tell me how they fare after that.

Why isn't anyone bitching....
- Leaf was AWFUL! Not only that, all night the reporters and even Leaf's bro went on about how this offense isn't made for leaf and leaf wouldn't even be here if they originally had this offense. Maybe thats true. So what the FUCK are our coaches thinking not having some osrt of backup plan. There was NONE! Oh. im sorry..there was a plan B....Have leaf run the same exact running play to stewart every single play. I mean even ARIZONA can adjust to that kind of playcalling.
- Even I knew Dixon was going to be worse (health condition) than he was letting on. I knew it. I understand Dixon has a lot going for him this year but his pride might have just taken him out for the rest of the year (I love Dixon to death and I understand to need for him to play both for the team AND for himself) Anyways, he had to have known he was worse than he was. This hiding of information is crap. We had a week off. Work with leaf for two weeks in practice but say Dixon is going to start. Practice heavily with Roper..SOMETHING. Dixon should NOT have played at all last night.
- Why wern't our choaches firing up our defense before the half. We were letting them score at will. And as reported..instead of putting anybody's ass in a vice nobody was talking on th sideline. Dixon is down..somebody step up to some leadership
Fuck!

So many things were wrong...
But I 100% agree with the comments about Leaf. He was ineffective completely. He threw ONE good pass that I saw, all the rest, the receivers had to work for them. The way I see it, with Leaf (Especially injured), it was a sure thing that he was going to produce well. Roper was a gamble, but at least he would give a chance. I don't usually call for someone to be benched, but Leaf actually looked like a freshman on the field with making bad reads, bad passes, and bad choices.

Condolensces from someone who's been there
I was absolutely rooting for you to run the table after our game, and after your win agaisnt $C I was convinced this was your year.
Still, the Rose Bowl is within grasp. Take care of business and look for $C to beat ASU, and you're in. But more important than that (on a purely selfish level), I really hope you boys pound the ever-loving snot out of the babybruins. That will feel good even if it is the Holiday Bowl this year.
Best of luck on your last two games.

Let's just hope...
Why in the hell were we still running the option? It's not much of an "option" if the quarterback keep isn't one of them. All the defense had to do was key on the running back when we showed it because obviously Leaf isn't a running threat. It was a shit show.
Leaf is terrible, but if we can possibly make him feel comfortable in the pocket against UCLA, I think we'll be alright. Hopefully Bellotti can instill some confidence around him.
Oh, and what was the deal with constantly showing (and interviewing) Ryan Leaf? That guy is the definition of a loser and I don't want him spreading his loserness on the sideline. Get him a seat in the stands.
I realize that's harsh, but I still haven't gotten over it. Work is going to suck today.

Plan B...
I mean, we didn't even need someone who could make plays like Dennis. All that was needed was to actually throw a decent pass. To compound matters, he made poor decision after poor decision (running when he shouldn't, fumbles, stupid abominable interceptions, intentional groundings). It was quite possibly the worst QB performance I've seen in a long time.
As for Leaf feeling comfortable, our blocking wasn't as good as it could have been but Leaf's mechanics were absolutely deplorable. We was jumpy, and could not just sit back and survey the field. He was "scrambling" after about .7 seconds, and then making horrible throws.
I thought about it for a while...but really, with QB play like that, there is NOTHING that could have been different. There is just about no offense that could be executed when your QB play is that poor. I feel really bad for Darren McFadden, since he's had to put up with this all year.
As for Ryan Leaf...fuck that asshole. Hopefully this will bring a smile to your face.
If Leaf can't start hitting passes that he should hit (and hit last year), we don't stand a chance, no matter what Kelly tries to pull out of his ass.

But that was back when he was sophomore. He's gotten progressively WORSE every year since then.
And yeah, enough with Ryan Leaf.
Kind of dismayed that the Ducks didn't seem to have a better Plan B at QB.

Ryan Leaf is definitely the herald of disaster
I know this is harsh but I have little to no hope for Brady. I do have hope for the rest of the team and I couldn't agree with Dave more that this is a special Ducks team that deserves to go out as champions. I have hope for the rest of the team, just not for Brady. I actually thought our 0-line gave him a lot of protection and time for mayn of those plays. And after that disastrous first quarter and the early part of the second quarter our defense absolutely did their job. They held Arizona at 31 points for the equivalent of 2 and half quarters of regulation time. Yes, they were not doing their jobs when we got in the hole but they bucked up and did them the rest of the game.
If we are to have any hope I think it's still in Dennis. Can we just take a moment and think back on this kid's career? How remarkably has he blossomed this year as a leader and an enormous personal talent? Do you remember the Dennis Dixon that had to play when Kellen Clemens got injured back in 2004? Do you remember the Dennis Dixon that subsequently passed off the QB job with Leaf for the next two seasons? I do and he was absolutely not the Dennis we've seen this season. When he went down on that field I was heartbroken, not just for the team but for the Dennis that has come so far. I don't have any problem admitting that when he had tears in his eyes on the bench I did too. I want to take a day to mourn just for Dennis and for how hard he worked to come this far and for the stellar season he now most likely will not be able to finish. The untimely end of his college career (if it happens) will nothing short of a tragedy because of how far he's come. My prayers today will be with him and his family as they face this MRI.

Go Ducks
he's an extraordinary athlete and great teammate. i think he is even more deserving of the heisman after his injury. he dealt with a lot, but was smiling and supporting his team on the sidelines in any way he could. also, who could deny he was the keystone in the nation's best offense? the second he went down everything went down. even defense and special teams couldn't react to the loss. and it was dixon who personally made up for every loss on offense. losing two receivers and a back usually spells disaster for any team, but he single handedly made up for it. it was a truly amazing performance, i only hope the heisman voters have the memory to make the right decision.
but none of that takes away from this amazing season. belotti was right, it was fun while it lasted. both college game days were amazing. seeing oregon on the front page of the USA Today sports page. beating USC in autzen. beating ASU, a top-5 BCS team, in autzen. running up the score in the Big House. my hat goes off to these guys and me heart goes out to those that have fallen with injuries.
we're still in a position to win the Pac-10 and represent our great state in the Rose Bowl--two extraordinary accomplishments in their own rite. i believe chip and belotti can make the necessary changes and Leaf has my full support. this is his senior year, and with dixon down, this is his season.

Did anybody else read this in the Register Guard?
"I looked the referee in the eye, and we had a conversation for about a minute," Agyeman said. "He told me it was our ball. He said, `White ball, get up 30, it's your ball, your ball.'
"I took one of my hands off the ball and went, `Are you sure?' and he said yes. I took the other one off, and the other guy overruled him. The ref who told me to get off the ball apologized to me the next series. It is what it is.""
Between this and the no call on the blatent block in the back of the gunner that sprang Cason for punt return for the touchdown.
Somebody get Tom Hansen on the Phone...refs need to get better.

Gotta Win 2
I hope Chip either has an offense designed to take advantage of a gimpy Leaf, or one designed to cover for a young Roper. If Stewart can't go, it probably won't matter. Crenshaw's good, but he can't take over a game.
If the team that goes to Pasadena next week is devoid of the stars, will UCLA do it's usual talent matching and keep us in the game?
Assuming $C takes out the Devils and we win out, the Rose Bowl is still ours. If the team gets healthier(paysinger, stewart, pflugrad, jones) we could still take out an overrated OSU team or demoralize the wolverines for a second time. Either outcome is perfectly acceptable to me.

Assuming...
Granted, UCLA is one of the teams bad enough to have lost to Notre Dame this year... But I wouldn't be making reservations for Pasadena just yet.
And then there's the "overrated" Beavers, who have one of the top run defenses in the USA, I note. Good luck with that Leaf fellow... Home teams have won the Civil War consistently, but I wouldn't necessarily "assume" that one either.
