Cal 31, Oregon 24

First off, what a hell of a game.  In the end, we made a few mistakes and Cal didn't.  You just have to tip your cap and move on.

Four turnovers in the fourth quarter.  Ugh.  Now, two of them were really fluky.  Tipped interceptions are rarely the QBs fault, and you just credit the Cal lineman for catching it.  As for the last play of the game.  Well, if that doesn't happen, we might still be playing.  That the ball went through the end zone isn't really Oregon's fault, but the bottom line is that the game never should have gotten to that situation.

The other two turnovers were inexcusable.  The fumbled kickoff return was awful (both guys trying to catch the ball, WTF?), and Dixon made a really bad read on the first pick.  Its not like Cal made great plays to get any of these turnovers.  Two just happened, and two were boneheaded mistakes.

I was shocked when I saw the stats.  Oregon gained 100 more yards.  Dixon threw for 306, and Oregon ran for 191.  Forsett only had 101 yards on the ground, and Hawkins had only two catches.  You read me those stats before the game, and I'm thinking blowout city.  Obviously, not the case.

In the first half, both defenses played surprisingly well.  10-3 at halftime, and it would have been 3-3 if not for a stupid late hit by Cal.  The defenses played great, the offenses, not so much.

In the second half, Cal's offense woke up.  Aliotti stacked the box and forced Longshore to beat us.  And, to my shock and horror, he did.  Longshore didn't really make plays, as much as he took what the defense gave him and didn't make mistakes.  Last year, he melts down in this game.   Obviously, he's learned from that.  And our secondary, which had been great all year, just couldn't cover DeSean Jackson, who was wide open at will.  Our young secondary will be great, but I was mistaken a bit.  They are not quite there yet.

Our special teams were a mixed bag.  We did a great job not allowing Cal any opportunities for big plays, but we didn't get great returns ourselves.  And that KO return was inexcusable.

I want to caution against two things.  Controversy starters like Canzano and talk radio will try to say that Dixon melted down or Bellotti is no longer a good coach.  Don't buy into it.  It wasn't Dixon's greatest game, and he did miss some open receivers, but only one of the four TOs was his fault.  He had a couple of recievers open for touchdowns in the first half that he missed, and that might have changed the game had they worked.  But not having your best stuff is hardly a meltdown.  As for Bellotti, its not like Tedford did something genius and outfoxed Bellotti.  His team just didn't make mistakes.

It sucks because it shouldn't have happened, but its hardly a debilitating loss.  Look at all the teams that fell--Oklahoma, West Virginia, Texas, etc.  Oregon is still very good and will still have a good year.  Its just that the national championship hopes, which were unrealistic anyway, are now dashed.

I'll have some better analysis up tomorrow, I just wanted to express a few thoughts.  Autzen was rockin', and GameDay was great.  It was a good time except for the outcome.  Its a shame that we have to wait to weeks to get a better taste in our mouths.

GO DUCKS!!!

Well said...
although reading what you said made me relive the horror of the game (just the bad parts), you make me feel a little better, Dave, and thank you for that. It sucks right now, but if you think about it, its great that we were even in this position this year and that we played Cal to the wire...GameDay was great exposure for our school and community, and we still have an awesome football team that will probably get double-digit wins and could still win a share of the Pac-10 Title. Hang your head up, Duck fans, because this season is going to be a heck of a ride.

Rough Loss...really rough
But what I'm waiting for is all the Cal-supporters to come back over here and boast and puff their chests out real big and start flamin' again.  FLAME ON Cal fans!

No gloating
Ease off the steroids, GangGreen -

This was a very close game, and the Ducks played with heart, guts, and desire.  In games like this it's a shame for any side to lose.  And from what I saw on the tube, the Duck fans just lit up Autzen and did their team proud.

That being said, the game turned on big plays, which is kind of what I expected.  These two teams are just too similar for one to blow out the other.

Good luck to Oregon the rest of the year - especially when they meet the Ketchup and Mustard, and when they travel to play the babybruins.

And thanks to the AtQ guys for being good hosts during this past week.

Go Ducks and Go Bears!

You won't get much of that...
except for maybe a few homer Cal fans who recently jumped on the bandwagon.  Cal has sucked most of my lifetime, so we are conditioned to not talk smack.  However, we do support our team, even when they suck.  Good luck Ducks, beat U$C.

The Ducks are good
Take it from this Cal fan, this was a fantastic game on both sides and the Ducks are a really good team. Both teams made some mistakes, but in the end Cal withstood a FURIOUS comeback by the Ducks.

Nothing to get down about. Hold your heads high, Ducks fans. They played one hell of a game. (Trust me -- the last two Cal games at Autzen were amazing, too, and we came out on the losing side of those.)

Good luck for the rest of the year.

Well said
But this loss is still tough.  Really tough.  Did we deserve to win?  No.  We didn't, but we had a great chance, and just didn't follow through.  It'll be interesting to see how the team handles this loss.  I'm looking forward to a good rest of the season, but this one will tough for a while.

kirks top 5
herbie's top 5 as he says during the usc/wash game.

usc, lsu, cal, ohiostate, oregon.

i think he's right (as of now, though the polls wont   agree) and whether or not he is; 3 pac10 teams reasonably placed in the top 5?

by falseintellect on Sep 29, 2007 7:42 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know about the top five
But certainly there will be three Pac-10 teams in the top ten. Oregon will move up, I'm thinking to somewhere between 7-9.

by gigglingone on Sep 29, 2007 8:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well
i dont think oregon WILL be in the top 5, but that doesnt mean they don't deserve to be.

oregon will have to suffer a bit because of how the stupid ranking system works, but oregon will be underrated and a better team then most if not all the teams between them and cal.

first off, what a game??
dude, get a life...first off, what a disaster...thanks a lot ducks. you made me feel like shit once again, and i am ashamed to be a duck fan...i wish i had gone to any other pac ten school, so as to save the suffering that you have brought me.  are you serious????? the ducks suck.  all i ask is a win over cal at home, to reedeem the shame i endured after traveling to berckely last year.  nice job guys, way to let the nation know for sure that the ducks truely are the team everyone thought they were.

Seriously?
True fans stick through thick and thin. This loss doesn't prove that the Ducks are a bad team. It proves that Cal is a better team - which the polls showed before going into the game.

If Oregon won the game, that would have been called an "upset". The season isn't over - The national championship (Which was a huge long shot) is.
If Cal and Oregon can beat UCS, it isn't too hard to imagine a visit to the Rose Bowl.

Go Duckies!

No flaming here, GangGreen
It was a well played game by both teams, and it was a great national showcase for the Pac 10 (not that I expect that to be much consolation). Any Cal fan that comes over here to gloat doesn't know much about football--this game could have gone anyway.

And after sitting through another 4 quarters of Dan Fouts commentary, I have to agree with your signature.

Coaching
You said that we shouldn't claim that Belotti is a bad coach...and I agree.  However I do think that the brunt of today's loss is due to the coaching.

Instead of playing the game the Ducks know how and succeed with, they tried to change it up in order to throw Cal off.  I only say this because instead of going for meaningfull plays we were running for 2 and three yards all night (if a set of plays isn't working....try something else).  As far as passing was concerned most of Dixon's passes were thrown to a reciever on the line of scrimmage.  Dixon was hesitant on his feet.  He made little differance on the ground and it took him forever to figure out if he should run.

The 3 and outs were bull.

The coaches should have let them play the game they are used to.  This was not the same team I've been watching.

I don't know if you were just watching on TV
but it was evident at the stadium there were a lot of open receivers downfield that Dixon just didn't see.  Especially to his right--it was as if he wasn't looking to his right at all.

As for the three yards runs, sometimes you just have to credit the Cal defense, although keep in mind we had almost 200 yards rushing.

If the players don't make stupid turnovers in the 4th quarter, we win this game.

I must be the only one in the world...
..that thinks this was bad loss for the ducks.  While not a debacle like Utah/UCLA or CU/OU.  It smacks of a gag job with all those turnovers in the second half and what I consider a bonehead play at the end of the game.

The ducks are likely to rebound with a bye week and the homecoming game against a soft WSU team--some favorable scheduling there.

"Missed Field Goal" in the 3rd Quarter
If you Ducks can count, the last play of he game would have never made a difference had Cal been credited with the "missed field goal."

Even your buddy Fouts agreed that was a bum call!

However, I wish you well in beating USC (which you can probably do if last night was an example).

It was great to see Pete Carroll's true character surface!

I don't know if that was in or not.
Every reply I saw, it looked like it was directly over the upright. I think it would have bounced off of it. Where it went after that? I don't know.

"Missed" Field Goal
Bottom line, the last play was no issue.

Rankings
Personally, I think you guys got gypped in the rankings this week--that we moved up and the game came down to the last seconds, literally, I would have expected a break into the top 10, especially with all the other upsets.

While I do believe that the field goal that was missed was actually good, the Ducks played hard and played extremely well--minus the two Dixon picks, you probably would have won it.  You can blame it on Dixon, but give our defense a little credit--the last tipped pass-interception was quite a play.

As for the coaching question, I was surprised Dennis Dixon didn't run more, but he seemed to find Dickson (?) most of the afternoon.  To try to throw the other team off balance is something all coaches look to do--perhaps Belloti was at just a slight disadvantage because after years of working with Tedford, they could probably both guess what was coming.  Also, hence the low-scoring first half.

Impressed with the Ducks, but Go Bears!

by gobears on Sep 30, 2007 12:04 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that two games in a row now
that Dixon hasn't run much.  I think, at least in this game, that is was mis-reads on the read option.

That tip interception was a great play by the linebacker who caught it.  I was just saying that tipped INTs usually aren't the QBs fault.  The turnovers I was most upset about were the first INT and the KO fumble.

Didn't have a good view of the FG in question from my spot in the stadium.

Anyway, good game Bears.  Best of luck the rest of the way.  The rankings are the way they are, but I expect the Ducks back in the top ten soon.  I also expect ASU to join them.

Sad outcome but a good game. Still proud of you!
Thanks Dave for excellent analysis.  No game hinges on one play, and I hope none of our athletes put too bulky of a burden on themselves.  I hope they watch the tapes carefully and learn what they should.  But most importantly, I hope they don't get too down on themselves for this.  They played a good game overall.  It's been a fun week and an engaging game.
Thanks Cal fans for the interactions.  May we both beat USC.

Go Ducks!!

Not that it really matters...
But I was sitting in the endzone with a straight line from goal post to goal post and the missed field goal was directly over the upright.

The rule is that it has to be inside the post, as though the upright goes straight up forever.  That ball would have definitely hit the upright.

Anyway, I still think the Ducks are a great team with the potential for an 11-1 season.

To the player that said only Cal can beat Cal, wrong.  Only Oregon can beat Oregon. (see 4th Qtr)

by duxrulz on Sep 30, 2007 6:00 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who beats who?
Only Oregon can beat Oregon. (see 4th Qtr)

Ummmm ... I think the Follett interception, the Kane tip with the Alualu pick, and Ezeff's massive hit at the end had something to do with the outcome.

I'm just saying.

Good luck on the rest of the season.

by SoCal Oski on Sep 30, 2007 7:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Who beat us...
Us.  Look, I'm not trying to take anything away from Cal... well, yeah I guess I am, but:

Muffed Kick - all Ducks.
Follett int. - he did nothing, bad Dixon read.
Alualu pick - very lazy throw, bad bounce.
Ezeff's "massive" hit - uh, yeah massive... a third grader could've knocked that ball out while Colvin was moving it out to reach for the goal line.

Cal won.  Can't change that.  But this whole "only Cal can beat Cal" stuff is pretty silly.  Your D was gassed at the end, if Colvin doesn't fumble you're going down in OT.

by duxrulz on Sep 30, 2007 8:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pretty hard for Follett to come up with a pick...
considering he was injured and wasn't playing.  Anthony Felder made the grab.

Oregon
showed a lot of maturity Saturday. Last year's team would have quit after the first TO. Even though we made some plays that eventually cost us in the end, the team showed great heart batteling back and not giving up, something they didn't show the last 5-8 games last year. Great time for a bye week, gives the team a chance to emotionally settle down and heel up. Any word on AJ's foot injury? The Cougs in our house in two weeks, I'm going out on a limb and say a long day for Brink's last game in Autzen.
