Cal 31, Oregon 24
First off, what a hell of a game. In the end, we made a few mistakes and Cal didn't. You just have to tip your cap and move on.
Four turnovers in the fourth quarter. Ugh. Now, two of them were really fluky. Tipped interceptions are rarely the QBs fault, and you just credit the Cal lineman for catching it. As for the last play of the game. Well, if that doesn't happen, we might still be playing. That the ball went through the end zone isn't really Oregon's fault, but the bottom line is that the game never should have gotten to that situation.
The other two turnovers were inexcusable. The fumbled kickoff return was awful (both guys trying to catch the ball, WTF?), and Dixon made a really bad read on the first pick. Its not like Cal made great plays to get any of these turnovers. Two just happened, and two were boneheaded mistakes.
I was shocked when I saw the stats. Oregon gained 100 more yards. Dixon threw for 306, and Oregon ran for 191. Forsett only had 101 yards on the ground, and Hawkins had only two catches. You read me those stats before the game, and I'm thinking blowout city. Obviously, not the case.
In the first half, both defenses played surprisingly well. 10-3 at halftime, and it would have been 3-3 if not for a stupid late hit by Cal. The defenses played great, the offenses, not so much.
In the second half, Cal's offense woke up. Aliotti stacked the box and forced Longshore to beat us. And, to my shock and horror, he did. Longshore didn't really make plays, as much as he took what the defense gave him and didn't make mistakes. Last year, he melts down in this game. Obviously, he's learned from that. And our secondary, which had been great all year, just couldn't cover DeSean Jackson, who was wide open at will. Our young secondary will be great, but I was mistaken a bit. They are not quite there yet.
Our special teams were a mixed bag. We did a great job not allowing Cal any opportunities for big plays, but we didn't get great returns ourselves. And that KO return was inexcusable.
I want to caution against two things. Controversy starters like Canzano and talk radio will try to say that Dixon melted down or Bellotti is no longer a good coach. Don't buy into it. It wasn't Dixon's greatest game, and he did miss some open receivers, but only one of the four TOs was his fault. He had a couple of recievers open for touchdowns in the first half that he missed, and that might have changed the game had they worked. But not having your best stuff is hardly a meltdown. As for Bellotti, its not like Tedford did something genius and outfoxed Bellotti. His team just didn't make mistakes.
It sucks because it shouldn't have happened, but its hardly a debilitating loss. Look at all the teams that fell--Oklahoma, West Virginia, Texas, etc. Oregon is still very good and will still have a good year. Its just that the national championship hopes, which were unrealistic anyway, are now dashed.
I'll have some better analysis up tomorrow, I just wanted to express a few thoughts. Autzen was rockin', and GameDay was great. It was a good time except for the outcome. Its a shame that we have to wait to weeks to get a better taste in our mouths.
GO DUCKS!!!

Rough Loss...really rough

No gloating
This was a very close game, and the Ducks played with heart, guts, and desire. In games like this it's a shame for any side to lose. And from what I saw on the tube, the Duck fans just lit up Autzen and did their team proud.
That being said, the game turned on big plays, which is kind of what I expected. These two teams are just too similar for one to blow out the other.
Good luck to Oregon the rest of the year - especially when they meet the Ketchup and Mustard, and when they travel to play the babybruins.
And thanks to the AtQ guys for being good hosts during this past week.
Go Ducks and Go Bears!

The Ducks are good
Nothing to get down about. Hold your heads high, Ducks fans. They played one hell of a game. (Trust me -- the last two Cal games at Autzen were amazing, too, and we came out on the losing side of those.)
Good luck for the rest of the year.

kirks top 5
usc, lsu, cal, ohiostate, oregon.
i think he's right (as of now, though the polls wont agree) and whether or not he is; 3 pac10 teams reasonably placed in the top 5?

I don't know about the top five

well
oregon will have to suffer a bit because of how the stupid ranking system works, but oregon will be underrated and a better team then most if not all the teams between them and cal.

Seriously?
If Oregon won the game, that would have been called an "upset". The season isn't over - The national championship (Which was a huge long shot) is.
If Cal and Oregon can beat UCS, it isn't too hard to imagine a visit to the Rose Bowl.

No flaming here, GangGreen
And after sitting through another 4 quarters of Dan Fouts commentary, I have to agree with your signature.

Coaching
Instead of playing the game the Ducks know how and succeed with, they tried to change it up in order to throw Cal off. I only say this because instead of going for meaningfull plays we were running for 2 and three yards all night (if a set of plays isn't working....try something else). As far as passing was concerned most of Dixon's passes were thrown to a reciever on the line of scrimmage. Dixon was hesitant on his feet. He made little differance on the ground and it took him forever to figure out if he should run.
The 3 and outs were bull.
The coaches should have let them play the game they are used to. This was not the same team I've been watching.

I don't know if you were just watching on TV
As for the three yards runs, sometimes you just have to credit the Cal defense, although keep in mind we had almost 200 yards rushing.
If the players don't make stupid turnovers in the 4th quarter, we win this game.

I must be the only one in the world...
The ducks are likely to rebound with a bye week and the homecoming game against a soft WSU team--some favorable scheduling there.

"Missed Field Goal" in the 3rd Quarter
Even your buddy Fouts agreed that was a bum call!
However, I wish you well in beating USC (which you can probably do if last night was an example).
It was great to see Pete Carroll's true character surface!

"Missed" Field Goal
by OskiWowWow on Sep 30, 2007 11:24 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Rankings
While I do believe that the field goal that was missed was actually good, the Ducks played hard and played extremely well--minus the two Dixon picks, you probably would have won it. You can blame it on Dixon, but give our defense a little credit--the last tipped pass-interception was quite a play.
As for the coaching question, I was surprised Dennis Dixon didn't run more, but he seemed to find Dickson (?) most of the afternoon. To try to throw the other team off balance is something all coaches look to do--perhaps Belloti was at just a slight disadvantage because after years of working with Tedford, they could probably both guess what was coming. Also, hence the low-scoring first half.
Impressed with the Ducks, but Go Bears!

that two games in a row now
That tip interception was a great play by the linebacker who caught it. I was just saying that tipped INTs usually aren't the QBs fault. The turnovers I was most upset about were the first INT and the KO fumble.
Didn't have a good view of the FG in question from my spot in the stadium.
Anyway, good game Bears. Best of luck the rest of the way. The rankings are the way they are, but I expect the Ducks back in the top ten soon. I also expect ASU to join them.

Sad outcome but a good game. Still proud of you!
Thanks Cal fans for the interactions. May we both beat USC.

Not that it really matters...
The rule is that it has to be inside the post, as though the upright goes straight up forever. That ball would have definitely hit the upright.
Anyway, I still think the Ducks are a great team with the potential for an 11-1 season.
To the player that said only Cal can beat Cal, wrong. Only Oregon can beat Oregon. (see 4th Qtr)

who beats who?
Ummmm ... I think the Follett interception, the Kane tip with the Alualu pick, and Ezeff's massive hit at the end had something to do with the outcome.
I'm just saying.
Good luck on the rest of the season.
by SoCal Oski on Sep 30, 2007 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who beat us...
Muffed Kick - all Ducks.
Follett int. - he did nothing, bad Dixon read.
Alualu pick - very lazy throw, bad bounce.
Ezeff's "massive" hit - uh, yeah massive... a third grader could've knocked that ball out while Colvin was moving it out to reach for the goal line.
Cal won. Can't change that. But this whole "only Cal can beat Cal" stuff is pretty silly. Your D was gassed at the end, if Colvin doesn't fumble you're going down in OT.
