Reliving the Season: Michigan

Sorry for how long this one took--D

September 8, 2007
Michigan Stadium
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Leaders:

Oregon | Michigan
Passing:
Dixon 292 | Henne 172
Rushing:
Stewart: 111 | Hart 127
Receiving:
Paysinger 97 | Manningham 117

When we last left the season review, we were left very unsure about our season.  We were encouraged by the offense, but frustrated by the inconsistency.  And our defense surrendered more than a Frenchman at the sight of a German schoolboy.  And while I think many of us were cautiously optimistic, we were not excited about having Michigan on this particular week.  Michigan entered the season ranked #5 in the country, but opened up their season with an embarrassing home loss to 1-AA Appalachian State, who used a spread offense to eek out a win.  Many believed that there was no way Michigan was that bad--and was going to take it out on Oregon the next week.

And certainly, the game didn't start out as encouraging as we'd hoped.  To start off, our defense was every bit as bad as we feared it would be, taking about two minutes to march down to the Oregon 31.  But a well timed interception by Matthew Harper (and he would have a penchant for that this season) would keep the Wolverines out of the end zone.  Oregon rode a series of short passes down to the six yard line themselves, but when we had to settle for a field goal, you sensed that we let an opportunity slip by, and that it might hurt us later on.  And as Mike Hart sliced through our defense en route to a Michigan touchdown and a 7-3 Wolverine lead, your gut practiced wrenching because it was going to be one of those games.

Psych.

Brian Paysinger and Dennis Dixon squashed any fears with this bomb on the first play of Oregon's next possession:

Honestly, the game was over right there.  Chad Henne got hurt.  Mike Hart tried but couldn't make it happen.  And Oregon just imposed their will any way they wanted.  Long bomb to Jones.  Long bomb to Williams.  And we all know the signature play of the game, the one that would put Dennis Dixon on the map as a player to watch this season:

And what else can you really say at that point.  When you do something like that, there is nothing you can't do against that team.  It was the most dominant performance I've ever seen by an Oregon team--and we played like crap for most of the second half.  Sure, we've seen bigger margins.  But have we ever seen an opponent's psyche so completely destroyed as we'd seen in this game?  It was the most fun I've ever had watching a Duck game on TV--and it's not even close.  In the house of the most storied program in the sport, and absolutely took them to the woodshed.

We still weren't exactly sure what we had after this game.  Were we really good?  Was Michigan really bad?  Both?  I still couldn't believe that we would be national title contenders at this point, but I had a lot more confidence that we were going to be really good.  I was only concerned about the trap.  A decent Fresno team, who was desperate for a win against us was next.  Remember what happened after the Michigan game in 2003?  I was just hoping that history didn't repeat itself........

The one fuckin game I miss all year...
Go ahead, let me hear it everyone. I deserve it, playing soccer and whatnot.

Btw Dave
Second play of the second drive. The top right corner reads 2nd and 6.

What a perfect throw though, got him right in stride, no underthrow resulting in a pick, no overthrow resulting in Dennis Dixon Jr. year.

thanks for this
And sorry, butthol, but this was the best game I've ever experienced live.  What a great vibe and what a huge win in relatively-enemy territory.  Gotta experience Autzen soon to see if it can trump this (everything anyone has ever told me leads me to believe the answer is a solid "YES").

Really, Dave, I think you could post clips on this for a solid week and I'd pay rapt attention.  Bring me the Statue of Liberty (parts 1 AND 2).

Go Ducks.  Go Vols.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane
Good times where had by all Ducks that day.  Great game that was the start of getting us on the map that year.

Videos
My Favorite part of the Statue video is not the play...its the look of dejection on the faces of all of the fans, especially the girl at the end who looks like she is about to burst into tears!

This was by far the most fun I had watching the Ducks. I did enjoy the game vs. Michigan at Autzen, though not as much.

SO Fun
As a student in Indiana, it is tough for me to see any live Ducks games...so I knew I was def going to Ann Arbor for this one...and boy, it was the greatest feeling to be a DUCK fan in that stadium.  As all the Mich fans were sitting down, shaking their heads, all the Ducks fans were standing up, throwing up the "O" to all the fellow Dixon supporters..it was unreal.  Thanks for the memories Dave, what a game!

My Favorite Memory From Being At the Game . . .
. . . that probably wasn't noticeable on TV

Me and the guy next to me predicting when the Michigan fans would Boo (which was most of the time) - and guessing when they would start leaving in droves.

The other bit I enjoyed was on the way to the game we passed through Greek row and all the front yards were packed and everyone was chanting "Joey Harrington" at us. On the way back Greek row was like a ghost town.

Greek Row...
"Joey Harrington" was probably the nicest thing they yelled at us...

I was there!
Ah, what a sweet trip down memory lane. I made the drive to Ann Arbor and it was one of the funnest weekends of my life. I had this event on my calendar ever since I moved to Chicago in 2004.

Here's a few things I remember from that weekend:

  • Duck fans absolutely took over downtown Ann Arbor on the Friday night before the game. We went to the Arbor Brewpub for dinner around 6:00 p.m. and it was pretty quiet. Within an hour the place was mostly Ducks...and within two hours it was packed wall-to-wall with quacker backers. We strolled over to Ashley's Pub and the scene there was absurd -- Ducks upstairs, Ducks downstairs, Ducks spilling out onto the sidewalk. Finally we hit up Scorekeepers and there were still more Ducks, this time a younger drunker crowd that was chanting LET'S GO DUCKS about every 20 minutes. Epic.
  • Halftime of the game, I'm in the bathroom line and this older Duck fan was behind me. We were grinning ear-to-ear but trying to keep a low profile, as you could sense the frustration all around us. In hushed tones, the old guy launched into a 5-minute spiel like "Dennis Dixon is having the best game of any quarterback in school history. I saw Dan Fouts, I saw Chris Miller, I saw 'em all but let me tell you..." etc. etc. etc.
  • Toward the end of the game, a Michigan fan shouted "NAME YOUR PRICE, BELLOTTI !!!"
  • After the game, I overheard a Michigan fan say, "It's like Lloyd Carr gets a phone call on Saturday morning, telling him there's a game in three hours and he'll find out the opponent when he gets to the stadium."
I've watched my tape of that game five or six times, and it never gets old.

Man...
What a Saturday man.

What a game....
It's funny to think about now, but going into this game, I was terrified of the turnovers.  While I was optimistic about the offense, I knew it could turn south in about 2.3 seconds, as it did the previous season.

If we didn't turn the ball over, I knew we'd have a chance, but I never expected what happened.  What a friggin game.  Our defense had some big stops, and our offense moved the ball at will throughout the entire game, and in spectacular fashion.

I was in the Big House for the game, in the midst of Michigan season ticket holders, and they were just in shock.  There was one guy behind us who had tickets for 50+ years, and he was great, calling a lot of the other fans complainers for calling for Carr's head ofter the ASU loss, and he stayed til the end, which most other fans did not.

This was as amazing win, and a great day.
