The Bylaw Blog (reminder: not officially affiliated with the NCAA, just a knowledgeable writer) points out that, depending on how far back the VIP status at the site of last night's brawl goes and how many times players used it, Tennessee could be looking at a major NCAA violation here. The school will likely have to figure out which players got their cover charges waived and how many times it happened for each, and then multiply that by the dollar amount of the cover charge to come up with a grand total of benefits received. It will be an estimate, of course, because I highly doubt the bar keeps a log of all of its patrons. It's still a nightmare for the UT compliance office though. Also, the Bylaw Blog wrote up a full explanation of why Dillon Baxter is unlikely to get in trouble with the NCAA cops.

One of the denizens of Bruins Nation has pointed out that Dillon Baxter's lying about violations by other schools may get him suspended. It's possible that he broke the same bylaw that Dez Bryant did last year, which resulted of course in Bryant being suspended for much of the year. The bylaw in question here is 10.1 (d), which says that "[k]nowingly furnishing the NCAA or the individual's institution false or misleading information concerning the individual's involvement in or knowledge of matters relevant to a possible violation of an NCAA regulation" is considered unethical conduct. What separates Baxter's accusations from Lane Kiffin's accusations last year is that Baxter told the school about it and USC's compliance director wrote a report on it. What, if anything, will happen to Baxter depends on whether the NCAA feels there is a case and if so, if it's worth pursuing. UPDATE The author of the Bylaw Blog doesn't think Baxter's in much trouble as the bylaw I cited above is about investigations already in progress. Crying wolf, it seems, is not an NCAA violation regardless of whether paperwork is filed or not.

Not surprised at all...

Citing SI's Andy Staples, SB Nation reports that both Dillon Baxter and D.J. Morgan have decommitted from USC. Kyle Prater, who was supposed to actually enroll Monday is also not only not doing that, but looking around. Prater had a poor showing in the U.S. Army All American Bowl yesterday, obviously distraught over Carroll up and leaving. Hey guys. Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron, who helped Pete Carroll build that thing he's just now leaving, are hoping to do the same thing over here.
