The Husker Women's basketball team remained undefeated as they knocked off the Baylor Bears in Waco, 65-56. The win will move Nebraska into the top ten and continues their best season in school history.
Paul Westhead will be introduced at 2:30pm PST as the new head coach of the Oregon women's basketball program. The Register Guard also has the story and Rob Moseley is on top of it as usual. If you would like some background on Paul, Wikipedia is a great source to quench your knowledge thirst.
In a decision that seemed to be inevitable, Bev Smith's contract was not renewed for the 2009-10 season. Moseley is also reporting the story.
A snippet from Pat Kilkenny....
"Bev is a wonderful person and is one of our greatest student-athletes of all-time, and this decision was not easy nor taken lightly. She always had the best interests of the University of Oregon first on her agenda, and always represented our university in a first-class manner. We wish coach Smith nothing but the best in the future, and thank her for her incredible efforts and dedication to Oregon, and all the of the student-athletes who have played for her. However, we have not had the success over time with our women’s basketball program that we now expect from all of our teams. While we remain patient with our programs, it is also important to recognize that our standards have evolved significantly upward over time. "
The Lady Ducks shot 30% from the field (sound familiar?) and were bounced from the Pac-10 Tournament by last place Washington. The Huskies are the first 10 seed to win a game in the Pac-10 Tournament. As for Bev Smith, this is not the way she wanted to go out this season. Given the requirements placed on the women's team before the season started, this could be the last game coached by Smith as a Duck.
