Jeff Tedford fired as head coach at Cal

Following a 3-9 season, the California Golden Bears have parted ways with longtime head coach Jeff Tedford.

Multiple sources are reporting that Cal has fired head football coach Jeff Tedford. A formal press conference is expected later this afternoon.

The news really comes as no surprise, as the perennially underachieving Golden Bears just finished a 3-9 season to open newly renovated Memorial Stadium. While the newly renovated $321 million stadium opened just this season, attendance has already been lagging due to the team's poor performance. Speculation was that a buyout nearing the $10 million mark on Tedford's contract may keep him in Berkeley another season, but AD Sandy Barbour did not let that deter her from pulling the trigger.

This is a move that I have been calling for all season. Cal has consistently had top recruiting classes under Tedford, and consistently placed a ton of talent in the NFL. What they have not done consistently is win. Since 2007, nobody in the country has underachieved more than Cal.

Let the speculation begin on who will be the next coach in Berkeley. I'll throw three names out there with Oregon ties based on nothing but pure speculation: Mike Bellotti, Justin Wilcox, and Mark Helfrich.
