True story: North Dakota used to be the Fighting Sioux. However, that was seen as offensive by the NCAA, and the school was forced to drop it in order to play in the postseason. In protest, when this controversy first arose, the state legislature passed a law preventing the University of North Dakota from adopting a new nickname until 2015. So, until then, UND is officially nickname-less.
