The Antiquated Week 12 QuackPoll

Look at us, ranking undefeated teams ahead of one-loss teams. Buncha old-timers.

Cooper Neill

The big news Tuesday night was one-loss Oregon leaping over undefeated Florida State in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. The committee cited Oregon's quality wins, Florida State's relative unimpressiveness, and the fact that Jameis Winston stole the finger sandwiches from the conference room* as reasons for the change. Was the QuackPoll as progressive? Of course not.

*I may have made the last one up, but who's gonna prove it, the Tallahassee Police Department?

DISCREPANCIES

We like Nebraska and Duke a lot, the committee like UCLA and LSU a lot. All four of those teams are actually pretty mediocre, and none of them have a shot at the playoff. Glad we spent time on it.

PLAYOFF HYPOTHETICALS

CFP: #1 Mississippi State vs. #4 TCU, #2 Oregon vs. #3 Florida State

QuackPoll: #1 Mississippi State vs. #4 TCU, #2 Florida State vs. #3 Oregon

The only difference in the scenario is Oregon wearing white in the Rose Bowl instead of green. Not sure which one I like more. Either way, I think this would be an Oregon-TCU championship game, though since Mississippi State is losing this weekend, we can't dream about it for much longer.

AWARDS

Drunk this week: Dom, he of the poll with Arizona at #8 and Auburn at #10, and Notre Dame ahead of Kansas State, Nebraska, UCLA, and Michigan State.

Sheep this week: Sean Goodbody, who just needs to switch TCU and Bama, and Ole Miss and Auburn, and he's got the AP Top 10. Most of us were sheepish this week, Sean was just the sheepish-est.

BIG GAMES THIS WEEK

Ohio State @ Minnesota - Man, it'd be hilarious if the Buckeyes lose to the Gophers the week after crushing Michigan State. It should probably happen.

Clemson @ Georgia Tech - Georgia Tech needs this one to keep the pressure on ACC Coastal front-runner Duke, still trying to earn the right to lose to Florida State by four touchdowns in the ACC title game.

Mississippi State @ Alabama - This is a game-changer; Mississippi State wins, and they've got a stranglehold on the #1 ranking, at least until next week when they play Ole Miss, or the week after in the SEC championship game. Holy crap, they have a looooong way to go. Alabama wins, they take over the SEC West lead, and will be in the top 4 next week.

Nebraska @ Wisconsin - This is the opposite of the previous game, between a team that nearly lost to McNeese State and a team that actually did lose to Northwestern. Both these teams are ranked. This season is weird.

Missouri @ Texas A&M, Auburn @ Georgia - Did you know, if Georgia and Mizzou both lose, and Florida beats South Carolina, Florida will be tied for first in the SEC East? Florida. Literally, Florida. If I had any idea what either of the Big Ten divisions were, I'd make a joke.
