At A Glance
- No. 20 Oregon Ducks (10-2, 0-0 Pac-12) — The Ducks are 2-0 against Mountain West teams so far this season, having beaten Boise State in Week 4 and UNLV in their most recent outing, 83-63. Against the Runnin’ Rebels, three Ducks reached double-digit scoring — Dillon Brooks (20p), Tyler Dorsey (18p) and Jordan Bell (16p) — in the absence of leading scorer Chris Boucher (14.1ppg, 7.8rpg), who sat out with a sprained ankle… The Ducks’ signature defense has been essential for them throughout the season. UO ranks 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.368), and has held opponents under 70 points for 11 straight games. With that, the Ducks are 111-14 under coach Dana Altman when holding opponents to under 70 points… Thanks to big-time swatters Boucher (35b, 7th nationally) and Bell (30b, 17th nationally), UO ranks first in the country in blocks with 104, which is 19 more than the next team (St. Johns NY, 85).
“I think I am getting into a groove now,” said Bell, who’s averaging a career-high 9.3 points and a team-best 8.3 boards per game. “Things are coming easier and I am keeping it simpler. Last year, I was figuring out what to do when I came into games, but this year my role is set and I focus on that. I am rebounding, defending and blocking shots.”
- Fresno State Bulldogs (8-3, 0-0 Mountain West) — Fresno State is 8-3 on the season with losses to Prairie View A&M, Bakersfield and most recently Marquette on Dec. 6. Since then, the Bulldogs have won three in a row, beating Cal Poly, Holy Names University and most recently Pacific… This marks the second straight season the ‘Dogs have started 8-3. Last season, they finished 25-10 overall, including their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001. Fresno State won the Mountain West Championship before falling to third-seeded Utah in the first round of the Big Dance… This season, Fresno State was chosen to finish fourth in the conference, as voted by members of the Mountain West media… Through 11 games, Jahmel Taylor (see below) is second in the country in three-point shooting (35-for-59, 59.3 percent)… Fresno State has been aggressive with forcing turnovers, and is tied for 14th in the nation with 9.4 steal per game. Jason Hopkins leads the effort with 2.5 swipes per contest, also good for 14th in the country.
