Marcus Mariota has been having an incredible sophomore season, but on Saturday, he suffered a fractured fibula and will miss the rest of the season.
During the third quarter of Tennessee’s 38-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mariota was sacked from behind by defensive tackle Sheldon Day. He was carted off the field and then headed to the team bus on crutches.
The Titans had worked hard on trying to get Mariota better protection after he was sacked 38 times in 12 games last season. The improvements were easy to see on the field, with that number dropping down to 21 this year in 14 games.
This year, Mariota completed 276-of-451 passes for 3,426 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 15 games. Mariota was recently named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Month for his stellar play in November.
Mariota will certainly be missed by the Titans. As of this writing, Tennessee’s playoff chances are on life support. They were eliminated from wild card contention today when the Dolphins beat the Bills in overtime. If the Texans beat the Bengals, Houston clinches the AFC South. If the Bengals win, the Titans and Texans will face off next weekend with the division title up for grabs.
