College football recruiting covers the whole nation, but sometimes, teams can find prospects in their own backyard. That was the case here as the Oregon Ducks landed Justin Herbert, a 3-star quarterback from Sheldon High School right here in Eugene.
Herbert, who is 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, missed almost his entire senior year with a broken leg after just two games. But Oregon had already seen what they needed to and remained committed to the local quarterback. In his first two games of the season, Herbert tossed 10 touchdown passes with no interceptions.
Herbert chose to stay at home with the Ducks, turning down offers from Montana State, Nevada, Northern Arizona and Portland State.
Like many kids in Eugene, Herbert grew up a die-hard Ducks fan as his family had season tickets. Now, he'll go from the bleachers of Autzen Stadium down to the playing field, fulfilling a lifelong dream.
