Last night, it was the Galen Rupp Show at Hayward Field as the former Duck won the men’s 10,000 final, becoming the first American to win eight straight titles in any event with his victory.
Rupp won the race in 27:55.04, using tactical surges throughout the race to break down his competition. Bernard Lagat, the 41-year old American record holder in the 5,000, said it wasn't the heat that got to him, it was Rupp. Lagat dropped out in the final part of the race while he was in third place, a mere five or six minutes away from making the Olympic team.
Today is a full afternoon of action at Hayward Field. There are finals in the women’s discus, women’s 10,000 and women’s long jump. There are also semifinals in the men’s and women’s 800 and 400, as well as opening rounds in the 100.
