SAN DIEGO, California— The Oregon Ducks found themselves locked in a Pitcher’s Duel Saturday in Game Two of the Tony Gwynn Classic, but managed to prevail over the Pirates of Seton Hall, 1-0.

Oregon starter sophomore Matt Mercer (1-1) tossed a gem, pitching seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and striking out seven without issuing a walk. Freshman relievers Ryne Nelson and Kenyon Yovan came in and each pitched a perfect inning, with Yovan picking up his second save of the season.

The Ducks’ lone run came in a rather unexpected fashion; after Yovan flied out for the first out of the seventh, freshman catcher Matthew Dyer appeared to have hit into a routine 5-3 ground out, but the ball got past Seton Hall first baseman Mikael-Ali Mogues for an error. Dyer was able to scurry into second base as a result of the miscue. A walk by freshman pinch hitter Gabe Matthews followed, and then junior shortstop Daniel Patzlaff was hit by a pitch from Pirates reliever Ryan Testani to load the bases. Ducks junior first baseman Kyle Kasser managed to also draw a walk, bringing home Dyer for what turned out to be the winning run.

For the game, Oregon was limited to just three hits, including one double. Seton Hall starter Cullen Dana (0-1), who pitched a strong six-and-a-third innings, took the loss.

The Ducks (4-2) are currently playing their second game of the day, against the host University of San Diego Toreros, first pitch was scheduled for 6:00 pm.
