Royce Freeman left off Doak Walker Award watch list

NCAA Football: Oregon at Oregon State Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

Each year, the Doak Walker Award is presented to the best running back in college football. Royce Freeman’s name is usually in the mix for that award, but not this year.

On Thursday, 61 names appeared on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award. Freeman’s name was not one of them.

Freeman struggled with injuries last year, resulting in a career-low 945 yards. This came just one year after he set the Oregon single-season record with 1,836 yards. As a result, Freeman opted not to declare for the NFL Draft and decided to return to Oregon for his senior season.

During his time with the Ducks, Freeman has rushed for 4,146 yards and 44 touchdowns. He’s just 936 yards shy of breaking the all-time school record for career rushing yards, currently held by LaMichael James. If he can break 1,000 yards one last time this season, he’d become just the fourth player in school history to run for over 1,000 yards three times in his career.

Do you think Freeman should've been included in the watch list?
