CAIRO, Egypt — The Team USA U19 squad defeated Spain 96-72 in the bronze medal consulation game on Sunday from the 2017 FIBA World Cup. Payton Pritchard helped guide his team to the win with 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and a stolen pass.
The No. 1 U19 International unit in the world fell to Canada on Saturday in the semifinal round. It was the first loss for a USA U19 team since the 2011 World Cup. Oregon’s incoming freshman Abu Kigab and his teammate RJ Barrett snapped Team USA’s incredible streak.
Many expected Team USA vs Spain for the gold medal match. However, the game fell into consolation territory when both teams lost on Saturday.
The West Linn native was 2-for-3 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe. Pritchard made his only 3-point attempt of the day.
Team USA opened a 25-8 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back from Egypt. Regardless, they will accept the bronze and seek a better result at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Pritchard was named to the World Cup All-Star Team alongside Abu Kigab. The point guard was fantastic for John Calipari’s group. He was able to lead his team to the bronze after losing their first U19 game since the 2011 World Cup.
Oregon’s guard tallied 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and a stolen pass. The West Linn product averaged 9.0 PPG, 3.1 APG, 2.9 RPG and 1.0 SPG for the tournament.
