Hope springs eternal in the offseason.

It's that magical time - the tabula rasa of August - where technically any team could go undefeated in the games that follow. Where fans overlook their teams' glaring weaknesses and overemphasize their strengths, thus talking themselves & each other into expectations of success that probably won't come to pass. Optimism abounds!

Then in September the potential energy of preseason predictions is converted to the kinetic energy of actual games and actual players smashing into each other, actual coaches making unforced errors, and reality checks in. Visions of rainbows & sugarplums give way to the wailing & gnashing of teeth for all but a fortunate few.

I hypothesize that most fanbases – in an average year – overestimate their team's prospects in those heady & naive days before the games are played. You could say it's part of the fundamental experience of being a fan.

But that's just a guess, let's put it to the test. Lo & behold fellow Ducks, I humbly present to you… The Prediction Project!

I'm polling each Pac-12 school's fanbase (at SBN & otherwise) to get a collection of regular season W-L predictions for their team. I'll compile these numbers, compare them to the actual outcomes at season's end, and see what juicy bits of insight we can pull from the data – which fanbase was the most accurate about their prospects, who completely whiffed on their team's triumph or misery, who was pleasantly surprised, or sadly deluded, etc.

Since this is an ATQ project though, I'm also going to pit those predictions against our commentariat voting on the outcome of each – let's see how we do through our objective & not-so-objective lenses vs our Pac-12 comrades.

So below I have 12 polls specifically for ATQers, each covering the winless-through-undefeated range for every Pac-12 team. In December when the smoke clears we'll see how the ideal meets up with the reality. I might even have a The Season Thus Far check-in at midway point.
