Oregon Drops Their First Loss of the Season, 77-69

Iowa led the entire game

It was a day of upsets at Madison Square Garden. #15 Syracuse fell to UConn and #13 Oregon took an L to Iowa. Not what I was expecting in the first round of the 2K Empire Classic. For the Ducks, it was an ugly game all around. Oregon gave up too many three-pointers in the first half and got killed on the glass.

Oregon Ducks:

(Starters)

Bol Bol - 14 Points, 5 Rebounds, 4 Blocks

Kenny Wooten - 2 Points, 6 Rebounds

Paul White - 7 Points, 7 Rebounds (3-13 FG)

Ehab Amin - 25 Points, 3 Steals (5-8 3PT)

Payton Pritchard - 5 Points, 4 Assists, 7 Rebounds (1-9 FG, 0-4 3PT)

(Reserves)

Abu Kigab - 4 Points

Victor Bailey Jr. - 12 Points

Will Richardson - 0 points

Iowa Hawkeyes:

Tyler Cook - 9 Points, 10 Rebounds

Luka Garza - 12 Points, 4 Rebounds

Jordan Bohannon - 16 Points

Joe Wieskamp - 4 Points, 5 Rebounds

Ryan Kriener - 11 Points

Here are my takeaways from the first round of the 2K Empire Classic:

  • Don’t try to shot a jump shot over Bol Bol.
  • A lot of missed close outs on three-pointers came from the Ducks early on.
  • Oregon offense seemed stagnant throughout the game; Not much energy.
  • Tyler Cook is going to make some NBA team very happy.
  • Iowa has drastically improved their defense from a year ago.
  • Will Richardson is starting to get more minutes each game but didn’t capitalize on it tonight.
  • Pritchard didn’t look like the team leader in the 1st half with 0 points on 0-4 shooting; Paul White is another veteran who only scored 1 point in the 1st half on 0-6 shooting.
  • Iowa was hot from three-point land while shooting 8-17 in the 1st half; Oregon was only 2-10 (Amin hit both three-pointers).
  • Ducks shot 8-31 (25.8%) from the field in the 1st half.
  • Pritchard made his first field goal with 14:36 in the second half. He struggled to make some sort of contribution the entire game.
  • Defense was picked up in the second half but a lot more turnovers.
  • Too many missed layups for the Ducks.
  • Bol Bol seemed to have an issue with cramping throughout this game.
  • Ducks loss the rebounding battle to the Hawkeyes, 46-34.
  • Hawkeyes shot 29-33 from the free-throw line.
  • Ducks finished 23-62 from the field (37.1%) and 6-18 from the three-point line (33.3%).
  • It looks like it’s going to take longer for this team chemistry to click as Altman finds his starting five.
  • Can Louis King make a big impact when he returns?

Fran Fraschilla made a good point on the broadcast that the Ducks don’t have multiple players that can go get a bucket when they need a quick one. Two years ago, you could easily rely on Dillion Brooks and Tyler Dorsey. This year, when Payton is cold and can’t buy a bucket, who do you rely on to score? Should it be Bol Bol? Maybe White or Amin? A few thoughts as Oregon moves on to the next game in the 2K Empire Classic.

Next Game - #13 Oregon vs #15 Syracuse (4:30 PM ET, ESPN2) on Friday, November 16th
