In a story reminiscent of D2: The Mighty Ducks, members of the Oregon Women’s Basketball team will compete as champions of the United States in the FIBA 3X3 World Cup. Earlier this year, Erin Boley, Oti Gildon, Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu swept all eight of their previous american competitors, earning their spot in Manila.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the FIBA 3X3 World Cup, don’t worry, you’re not alone. The tournament’s debut was held in 2012 in Athens, Greece. It’s gone from twice a year to an annual event, and includes both men’s and women’s teams. The FIBA 3X3 World Cup also includes unique rules that aim to achieve their goal of making basketball a more versatile sport.

-Teams consist of three players and one substitute.

-The game is played on a half-court

-First team to score 21 points wins.

-The game has a single 10 minute period and a 12-second shot clock.

-A shot inside the arc is one point, behind the arc is two points.

-A tie after 10 minutes results in overtime. First team to score two points in OT wins.

-The preliminary round consists of four groups of five competing in a round robin.

-The top two finishing teams of each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

-The Gold Medal game will take place on June 12th at 5:30 AM PT.

Ionescu and her Mighty Ducks are coming off of a 21-19 overtime win against France in Voiron to win the Big Twelve (not that Big-12) International 3X3 Tournament, a warm-up tourney before the World Cup begins on June, 8th.

The USA Women’s 3X3 Team opens the tournament against Iran and then continues their World Cup run against Andorra a few hours later. After a day off, Oregon’s dream team will compete against Uganda. Then, in a game reminiscent of yet another Hollywood classic (Rocky IV), USA will challenge defending champion Russia.
