I’ve been on a bit of a New York Times kick this morning, they’ve got a decent fitness blog apparently. Written by Gretchen Reynolds, it covers a lot of trendy topics but she does cut through the hype & presents some solid data in each entry.
First off is a piece on High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. The benefits of this approach are pretty well-documented, but a lot of casual exercisers are scared away from an approach that requires maximum exertion. One study indicates that it may be more enjoyable than people think.
And here’s another look at the old “If you exercise more, you just wind up eating more” conundrum. Apparently you can overcome this by increasing exercise duration, but you still have to watch portions & diet if you want to reliably lose weight. Definitely a lesson I learned in the 1st half of WTF.
