NCAA Womens Basketball: Final Four-Semifinals-Oregon vs Baylor Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

The Oregon Ducks (6-1) defeated Oklahoma State (6-2) and UT Arlington (4-3) by a combined score of 180 to 126, but ultimately fell to the #8 Louisville Cardinals (8-0) for their first loss of the season, 72-62.

#1 Oregon was invited to the Paradise Jam, alongside #2 Baylor, #17 Indiana, #5 South Carolina and Washington State, but were only scheduled to play the three previously mentioned teams. The three matchups took place in a three day span and were available for viewing only on FloSports for a $12.50 subscription fee.

The Ducks kicked off the Paradise Jam with a 34-point first quarter and never looked back in their opening matchup against Oklahoma State. Sabrina Ionescu made four of her six assists in the first quarter and surpassed Jordin Canada for the PAC-12’s all-time women’s assists record. She is now 106 assist away from the all-time PAC-12 assists record held by Oregon State’s Gary Payton. Ruthy Hebard also had a huge first quarter; she had a double-double (12 PTS - 10 REB) before the second.

The Duck offense cooled down in the second quarter. shooting 6-of-20, but the fire was rekindled coming back from the half. With 6:28 left in the third quarter, a Ionescu triple gave Oregon their largest lead of the game at 60-31. The Cowgirls got within 14 point at the 5:34 mark in the fourth, but Hebard and Ionescu continued to hit shots. The Ducks may have started out in a scoring frenzy, but were outscored in every other frame. Minyon Moore scored 14 points and Erin Boley hit four triples to finish with 12 points. Satou Sabally had an off night, shooting 3-of-14 from the floor.

The 89-72 victory also happened to be the program’s 800th win! Congratulations Oregon Women’s Basketball, perhaps coach Graves can get us another 800.

Unlike the previous day’s game, the Ducks got off to a slow start. Against UT Arlington, Oregon started out 2-of-8 as they struggled to find their rhythm early, but some sound defense helped the Ducks weather the storm and put together a 9-0 run to end the first quarter. By halftime, the Lady Mavs were down 50 to 24 in large part due to their 15 turnovers. The Ducks finished the game shooting 53.1% from the floor, as forced turnovers turned to quick points - 29 points to be exact.

Oregon’s starters received some quality resting time on the bench as the lopsided score meant an increased role for the rest of the roster. Satou Sabally led all scorers with 19 points.

Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu played 24 and 28 minutes, respectively, and their stat lines reflect their reduced minutes; Hebard was 6-of-8 and finished with 16 points, but fell short of a double-double for the first time this season. Ionescu tallied 10 assists and nine rebounds, but snapped her 76-game streak of scoring in the double-digits.

The bench was more than ready to see some playing time, outscoring UT Arlington’s bench 32 to 15. Taylor Chavez led the charge with 17 points in just 20 minutes of play. The sophomore hit five triples and dished out three assists. Lydia Giomi also did a lot with a little by scoring six points and grabbing five boards in the fourth quarter. Freshman Jaz Shelley scored seven points and Holly Winterburn also made a field goal.

The #8 Louisville Cardinals came into the Paradise Jam undefeated, and remained perfect going into their matchup with the #1 Oregon Ducks. Louisville defeated UT Arlington by a score of 76 to 67, then Oklahoma State 69-48. And against the best team in the country, Kylee Shook and the Cardinals played tenacious defense and snuffed out a typically explosive offense, gaining powerful momentum early in the season by beating them 72 to 62.

Oregon started off hot once again, outscoring Louisville 24-13 in the first quarter, but after a productive opening ten minutes the Ducks shot 3-of-16 from the floor and hit zero of their seven attempts from three-point land. The Cardinals managed to hold the nation’s number one team to 37.5% from the floor, and after finishing the second quarter with a 16-4 run, they started the second half scoring eight consecutive points to go up 45 to 32.

With 2:36 left in the game, Oregon was able to cut the lead to six with a pair of Satou Sabally free throws, but Jaz Jones and Dana Evans were able to combine for 11 points to close out the quarter and seal the upset.

The game was obviously a big letdown for Sabrina Ionescu and crew, but the senior’s 13-point game set up for a potentially huge game against the Jackrabbits; after snapping her double-digit scoring streak of 76 games against UT Arlington, Ionescu got back on track against Louisville and reached 108 double-digit scoring games in her career, matching Allison Lang’s record for most in program history. The Triple-Double Queen also tied Lexi Bando’s program record of 283 made three-pointers.

Last season’s loss to Michigan State was a valuable lesson for this Duck squad at the time, hopefully this game can serve a similar purpose. Fingers crossed it's 800 games until the Ducks finish 34.2% (25/73) from the floor and 17.1% (6/35) from three-point range again.
