DUCKS 84 - HIGHLANDERS 41
The #3 Oregon Ducks (9-1, 5-0 Home) defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders (3-8, 2-6 Away) by a score of 84 to 41 in front of a raucous crowd at Matt Knight Arena. Bus loads of children were brought to the game on “Field Trip Day” and they were lucky enough to witness Sabrina Ionescu’s 20th Triple-Double and freshman Jaz Shellley’s record-breaking 32-point performance.
Satou Sabally sat the game out due to being “a little banged up”, according to coach Kelly Graves, and that opened the door for Jaz Shelley to make her first career start and it proved to be a historic one; the true freshman wowed the crowd of 11,705 by hitting 10 three-pointers, breaking the program record of nine most recently reached by teammate Erin Boley.
The Duck offense started off slow as they adjusted to playing without Sabally, but Oregon’s defense dismantled the UC Riverside attack, holding them to less than ten points in the first and third quarter. The Highlanders made eight shots from the floor in the first half and seven in the second, they were outrebounded 51 to 35, held to 24.6% from the floor and the Ducks scored 21 points off 20 turnovers.
Ruthy Hebard had to fight harder than usual to score, finishing 6-of-15 from the floor, but she went on crucial runs in the second and third quarter that helped maintain Oregon’s offensive pace. The bench contributed 16 points and Holly Winterburn had an especially notable performance with nine points. three rebounds, one block and two steals.
